To'all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL H. vMo- KENNA, a lcitizen of thel United States, resid ing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Bending Metal Bars, ofk whichnthe fol-V lowing is a specification. y n n.
This invention relates .to machines for bending metal, andespe'cially metalbars of that type employing a bed or table on which the work is held, and a pivoted bender which I by its turn bends the metalV around suitablek formers to give the desired angle. The object of the invention is to improve .the means for operating a pivoted bender,
said means including a shaft, and a clutch-` device which is controlled by hand tooperate the shaft and automatically released at the end of the stroke.
A further object of the invention is to iin-L prove the particular formers and the devices employed in the machine.

Fig. V7 is a plan of modification. Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a base covered by a plate 2, and 3 is a bed or table supported on the posts 4v. The table has a circular slot 18 for a purpose to be described. 5 is a shaft which is Y mounted in a step bearing l6 on-the base,
and its upper end turns in yand projects through a bearing plate 7 fastened to the table. Loose'on the shaft 5 is al gear 8, and keyed to the *shaftv directly above the gear is anarm 10.l The gear 8 has a series of upstanding lugs 9 yat the edge, and the couter end of the arm 10 has a shoulder 11 and a radial pivot 12 upon which is mounted' a rocking latch indicated as a whole at 15S. This latchhas a hub-14 which fits over the pivot anda hook part 16 which projects laterally in position to catch one of the lugs 19 when the latch is swung one way, thus clutching the gear 8 and the arm" 10 and turning the vlatter and the shaft 5, thegear 8 'being constantly' driven. " wherefore two stops 20'are lprovided on the arm 10, as ,shown in Fig. 4, the operating gear or motor being modified or reversed accordingly.
At 22 is indicated a shaft mounted on the bottom platevunder the table, and carrying a pinion 23 meshing with the gear 8 and also a gear 24 which meshes with a pinion 25 on a shaft 26 which carries a beveled gear 27 meshing with a bevel pinion 28 on' pulleys 35 and 36 driven by belt from any suitable power, with a belt shifterj37 to control the drive.
The upper end of shaft 5,? above the table i carries an arm 38 providedwitha stud 40 and bending roller 41. YThe stud may be set in any one of the holes, 39 in the rarm to `vary the bend. The shaft 5 also carries a centralr formingv roller 42, at the top of thev shaft. Thebearing plate 7 has a bracket 43 with holes 44 therein to receive a stud on the abutment block 45 which may beadjusted kto present any of its several faces to the Ybar to be bent.k 46 is a stop or knockout block which may be set at adjustment in the Slot 18 and fixed by bolt 47. .Y n Y Y In operation the bar, to be'bent is` placed between the benders`41 and 42 and against Y the abutment 45, as shown in Fig. 1. l The handle 17 is then thrown forward, causing` the latch hook 16 toengage one of the lugs 9; "This picks up the arm 10 and shaft. 5, swinging the arm 3S and bending the bar around the lformer 42. At the end of the desired bend 'the' handle 17 strikes thevstop block 46 and lifts the'latch, thereby disconl0 may then be swung back by pressure on the handle 17, the bent bar removed, and another bar inserted for the next operation.
Various changes in the work produced are permitted by varying position or size of the block Ll5 and foriners Il and 42; The clutch or latch connectionbetween the constantlyy driven gear and the bending shaft permits rapid operation upon the successive pieces of work, without stopping the motor.
I claim: i
l. In a metal bending machine, the combination of atable having' a work holder thereon andan arcuate slot therein, a shaft projecting through the table and having a bending arm above the same, a driving wheel loose on the shaft below the table, an arm fixed to the shaft, and a catch pivoted on the last mentioned arm and engageable with the wheel to turn theshaft, said catch having Copies of this patent may be obtained for an operating handle projecting upwardly through the slot in the table and movable in said slot when the arm swings.
2. In a metal bending machine, the combination of a table having a work holder and an arcuate slot therein, a shaft projecting through the table and having a bending arm above same, a driving gear below the table, and a clutch device between the gear and the ,shaft7 having an operating handle projecting through the slot and a stop adjustable along the slot to engage the handle at the end of stroke andv release the clutch.
