SPEGIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,434, dated April 15, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDRIOKL. KOLL'BERG, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Flanging Boiler-Heads, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in machines for flan gin g boiler-heads; and it consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and operation of the same.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view with a boiler-head in position to be flanged. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation with the parts in the same position as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation with the parts in the same Fig. i is a side elevation with the parts in the position which they occupy at the moment of completion of the flanging process. Fig. 5 is an end elevation with the parts in the same position as in Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and 7 are details.
In the several figures, 1 is the bed-plate supported upon the frame of the machine.
2 is a cross-bar connected to the bed-plate and provided with trunnions 3 at its ends, which rest in bearings supported on blocks 5, which travel on ways 6, and are moved by screws 7 and gears 8 for a purpose to be described.
9 are screws operated by rod 10 and gears 11 to adjust the center of the bed-plate nearer to or farther from the bar 2 to accommodate heads of different sizes. The screws are jourualed to the bed-plate, and their nuts are secured to the bar 2 for this purpose.
12 are centering-jaws moving in guides or slots on the bed-plate, by which the boilerhead is centered upon the bed-plate.
13 are screws for operating the jaws 12.

21 is a'clamping-block at the center of the bed-plate and arranged to revolve upon its stem 22.
'23 is a set-screw for adjusting the height of block 21.
2% is a clamping-block on the frame 15. It is also adapted to revolve and is provided with an adj usting-screw 25.
26 are the fianging-rollers mounted on shafts 27 and operated by gears 28 and 29 from the driving-shaft 30.
31 is the fast pulley on the shaft 30, which receives power from a suitable source, as indicated in Fig. 4, and 32 is a loose pulley.
33 is a drum operated from shaft by the gearing 34.
35 is a chain, which is wound up on the drum 33 as the latter revolves. Chain 35 passes through an overhead block 36, and is connected to the bed-plate 1, so that the lat ter is turned up byit, as shown in Fig. 4.
37 (see Figs. 6 and 7) is a roller to support the boiler-head and prevent sagging and friction. It is especially useful in fianging large heads. 7
In operation, the bed-plate being down, as in Fig. 2, a blank boiler-head is placed on the clamping-block 21 with its edge between the Hangings-rollers 26. The centering-jaws 12 are then operated by screws 13 and brought into contact with the boiler-head, and thereby center it on the bed-plate and block 21. The clamping-frame is brought down, the hook 18 engaged on the edge of the bed-plate, and the hand-wheel 19 set up so that the boiler-head 1a is tightly clamped between blocks 21, and 24. The centering-jaws are then slightly retracted to free the edge of the boiler-head, and the machine is set in operation. As the flan ing-rolls 26 revolve, they turn the boiler-head so that all parts of its edge are operated on by them. At the same time the chain 35 is wound up on the drum 33 and gradually turns the bed-plate to its upright position. (Shown in Fig. 4..) The combined action forms a flange on the head. ,Thisoperation being completed, the machine is stopped and the flange on the head drawn out from between theflanging-rollers by turning the screws 7. The bed-plate may then be returned to its horizontal position,the clamping-frame 15 released, the flanged head removed, a new blank substituted, and the operation repeated.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the bed-plate provided with trunnions, the traveling bearings for said trunnions, the screws '7, for adjusting said bear- 1 ings, the clamping devices, and the flanging' rolls.
2. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the bed-plate, its supporting-beam,
the adj usting-screws 9, and the rod and gears for operating said screws.
3. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a bed-plate having supporting-trunnions on opposite sides, bearing-blocks for each trunnion, and guideways on which said blocks move to withdraw the head from the flanging device.
