IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR SIZING. STRETCHING, AND COLORING PAPER AND OTHER FABRICS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,692, dated June 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, PETER HILD, of the city,
county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Sizing, Stretching, and Coloring Paper and other Fabrics; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use-the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Fignre 1 represents a sectional front view of Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.

This invention consists in the arrangement of a series (two or more) of pulley-carryin g hangers, from which is suspended a jointed bar supporting the fabric to be treated, while the pulleys of the hangers run on tracks secured to the upper floor-beams of the room in combination with a jointed bar, which is secured to the lower edge of the fabric to be treated, and to which are secured a series (two or more) of hoisting-tackles, which are hitched to hooks secured in the floor in such a manner that by means of the pulleycarrying hangers and tracks a number of fabric-supporting bars can be suspended from the ceiling parallel to each other, and that each piece of fabric can be readily moved in a convenient position to be reached from both sides, and
then subjected to the proper tension by the hoisting-tackles acting on the lower bar, and
after the fabric has been sized and colored it can be moved close up to the preceding sheet and left to dry while being subjeoted-to the requisite tension to prevent it from wrinkling.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a bar, which is by preference made in sections, united by hinge-joints, so that the same can be folded up in a comparatively small compass when not required. This bar is suspended from a series of hangers, B, each of which carries a grooved pulley, a, that runs on a track, I), secured to one of the beams O of the ceiling or upper floor of the room in which the operation is to be carried on. From the bar A is suspended the fabric to be treated, the whole piece of said fabric being tacked or otherwise secured at its upper edge to said bar, while to the lower edge of said piece of fabric is secured a bar, D, similar in every re spect to the bar A; the two bars A and D, consequently, constitute an open-end frame, which supports the piece of fabric to be treated, and by means of the pulley-carryin g hangers B this open-end frame can be moved parallel to the beams O. In the lower bar D are secured hooks b, from which are suspended hoisting-tackles E, which are hitched to hooks c, fastened at proper distances apart in the floor of the room.
By these means the fabric supported by the open-end frame A D can be subjected to the requisite degree of tension, and a series of such frames can be arranged side by side, as shown in Fig.2, and said frames can be moved close together or far apart, as may be desired, so that after a piece of fabric has been sized and colored it can be moved close up to the preceding frame and kept under the requisite degree of tension until it is dry, while that piece of fabric which is to be sized and colored can be readily moved in such a position that convenient access to it can be had from both 7 sides. By this arrangement I am enabled to size, stretch, and color a large number of pieces in a comparatively small space, the work being accomplished with great rapidity and convenience.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pulley-carrying hangers B and tracks b, secured to the beams or ceiling O, in combination with open-end frames A D and hoisting-tackles E, all combined and operating sub stantially in the manner herein shown and de scribed.
