' naimfrnnprne rinvrcn To all whom it may-concern: I
Be-itknown that I, lViLLIAM"S;.HAMM, a citizen of theUnited- States, and. resident of Gook, and
State of Illinois, 'haveiinvented certaiii'new and useful Improvements in Band-Feeding DGVlOQSyO'f which the following is:a 'specification, accompanying thereof. I g
The invention relates toi-devices for feeding sheet metal bands to the work to which they are to be applied; its particular object being to secure ahigh degree of efiiciency,
drawings, forming apart One embodiment of the invention is hereaccompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan view ofthe device;
Fig. 2 is a view of one of the bands upon which it is adapted to operate;
Figs. 3 and a tively, on the lines 3-8 and H of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a side view of the device, some parts being broken away;
Fig. (i is a detail side view of the feeder;
Figs. 7 and 8 are detail sectional views taken, 88 of Fig. 6; and
Fig. 9 is a detail plan view of the feeder.
The device comprises a bed plate 10, which inafter described, and is illustrated in the may be mounted upon legs, as 11, 11, which,
vanced by any suitable means. For this purposethere is showna plurality of cords or cables 15, attached to suitable lugs 16 depending from the follower and running in channels 17 in the bed 10, each of these cords or cables running over a sheave 18 journaled in an aperture 19 in the bed, a weight 20 being attached to its end.
The follower 14: is provided with a handle 21, by means of which it may be readily retracted for the purpose of refilling the device withbands, and may be held in its retracted position by means of a thumb latch Specification of Letters Xatent.
and which are illustrated iin the formed in the inner are sectional views, respecrespectively, on the lines 7-7 and ture 32, is engaged by or new st). ILLINOIS, ce reeerr u or .I L nQ s,
22, engageablewith: a stop block 23 at the rear edge of the bed; I

A pair of bars 2%; 2 5, arrangedblongitudi-g i nally of he bed andrigidlysecured thereto,
limit the {K137111106 movement of the massof bands and form a slideway alongwhichthey may besuccessively fed. The upperbarl2 i 1s PI'OVlClGCl on its "front :face with li'ps 26,
having their lower faces-beveled, as shown,
for 1 the 1 purpose .of insuring the accurate alininge-of the 2 bands I as they are fed.
The feeder comprises abloe'k 27 slidable between the rear faces of the=bars 24, 25',-and
aalongitudinal'guide1bar 28 fixed to; the bed 5 10. The bloclr27 is provided with a suitable handle 29, 103 means of*wlnchitinay be conveniently reciprocated, and it is also provided with lateral flanges 30, 31, running, respectlvely, in a longitudinal channel 32 face of the guide-bar 28 and in a space between the bars 2a, 25.
Pivoted within a transverse aperture in the block 27, and projecting laterally beyond both of its faces, is a dog 33, the nose 34- of which projects beyond the front faces of the bars 24:, 25, a sufficient distance to engage the rear end of the band 13 which is in contact therewith. A. pin 35, crossing the aper-Q dog 33 when the feeder is retracted, so as to swlng its nose back of the band next to be advanced. The feeder now being pushed forward, the band is carried with it. Upon retracting the feeder the dog will be tilted its nose sliding over provided with a tangential channel 38, for
receiving the band,--this channel, when the being in line holder and former is in place, with the advancing band. As the feeder is pushed forward by the operator, the band enters the channel 38 and follows the in terior surface of the former, and is there securely held in position to be fitted to the article to which it is adapted to be attached.
the rear end of the j In use the follower 1% is first retracted, a quantity of bands are introduced in front of u it, and the latch 22 being released pressureis applied by the weights 20, or other equivalent means, to force the mass of bands forwardly against the faces of the bars 24, 25. While the bands will norn'lally rest evenly upon the upper surface of the bed, care is not required to insure accuracy in this regard as they are positively forced downwardly upon the bed by the lips 26.
The bands will, of course, be given such shape as may be required. There is shown a band having a tag 39 at one end, by means of which it may be graspedfor the purpose of stripping it from the form to which it shall subsequently be attached. The band is also shown as having its forward end 40 beveled, this form conveniently serving to engage an overhanging lip Q1 of one of the guide elements 12, the tag 39 being engaged by a similar lip on the other guide element.
I claim as my invention-V 1. In a bandfeeding device, in combination, a suitable bed upon which a quantity of bands may rest on edge, ways between which the mass of bands may be advanced laterally, a follower for advancingthe mass of bands, a face plate against which the bands may'be pressed and along which they maybe separately moved longitudinally, a reciprocating feeder having a pivoted dog engageable with one end of the band bearing against the face plate, a detent for advancing the nose of the dog as the feeder reaches the limit of its retractive movement and means for holding the mass of bands against movement by the friction of the band moved by the feeder.
2. In a band feeding device, in combination, a suitable bed upon which a quantity of bands may rest on edge, ways between which the mass of bands may be advanced laterally, such ways having overlapping lips, a follower for advancing the mass of hands, a face plate against which the bands may be pressed and along which they may be separately moved longitudinally and a reciprocating feeder having)a dog engageable with one end of the band earing agalnst the face plate.
