Description

UNITED STATES ANDREW S. HALLIDIE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRlPlNG-PULLEVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,690, dated June 11, 1872.
' following description and accompanying drawin g are sufficient to enable any person skilled inthe art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improvement upon 7 the griping-pulley for wire-ropes for which Letters Patent No. 100,140 were granted to me on the 22d day of February, A. D. 1870. My improvement consists in hinging or otherwise loosely connecting the two sections or halves of each gripe by a suitable joint at their meeting edges along the bottom of the groove in which the rope lies.
In order to more fully explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an end view of a single gripe. Fig. 2 is a top view.
A A represents the two sections or jaws of a single gripe, such as are secured in a proper recess around the face of a pulley, so as to receive a wire or other rope and gripe it when the strain is upon it, but release it the instant the pressure upon the cavity between the two jaws is removed. My present improvement consists in uniting these two jaws together at their meeting edges in the bottom of the cavity at b by a hinge or other suitable joint, so that they will be held closely together when the strain comes upon them, while the depression of the united or hinged arms by the pressure will cause the jaws to be drawn together from a fixed fulcrum, so as to clamp the rope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe gripe for griping-pulleys, consisting of the jaws AA, when hinged together at 1), substantially as and for the purpose above described.
