To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ROGERS FLAN- NERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved stay bolt structure,-the object of the invention beingr to provide means in a sta-y bolt having a tell-tale hole or bore, whereby the condition of the bolt mav be determined without removing the bolt.
With this and other objects in view, the 2G invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the construction shown in the drawing, the outer boiler sheet is made with a hole having threaded wall for the reception of an externally threaded bearing sleeve 3,-the inner wall ofthe latter beine` formed with a curved bearing face 4 for the accommodation of the spherical head 85 5 of a stay bolt 6 and a portion of the bore of the bearing,- sleeve is made flaring as at 7 to permit lateral movement of the bolt. The head of the bolt is inclosed by means of a cap 8 which screws onto the sleeve 3 and e0 .may be formed with a shoulder 9 to engage the end of said sleeve,-the interior configuration of said cap being such as to form a clearance space 10. The inner end of the bolt 6. in the structure shown in the drawinni. may be threaded to pass through a suitable hole in the inner boiler sheet 2 and may be upset as shown at ll.

present instance, a material which is readily soluble in water, such as a soluble salt (sodium chlorid, for example), may be employed. The bore of the bolt, in the construction shown in Fi 0'. l, may be completely 60 filled with such material except only a sufficient pcrtion of its inner end to accommodate a closing device. In the construct-ion shown in F l, the wall of the inner end portion of the bore may be adapted for the reception of a plus' which, in the present instance, may be a brass screw 14. Instead of forming a bolt with a bore open at the inner end and extending' partially through the bolt, as above explained, a bolt l5 of the 70 rigid type shown in Fig. 2 may be formed with a bore 16 extending from end to end thereof and containing the soluble material 13, both ends of said bore being temporarily closed by means of suitable plugs 162-01' 75 the bolt may be made with a bore 17 extending from end to end and filled with the soluble material, and the respective ends of the bore left open as shown iim Fig. 3.
To test the bolt, the attendant will examine the contents of the bore. Such examination may be accomplished with the use of a wire inserted into said bore if a salt is employed. If he finds the powdered dissolvable material to be intact, he will know that the bolt is good, and he may then replace the pliW or screw. In the event that the bolt has become broken so as to admit water into its bore, such water will have dissolved the salt or similar material and upon examination, the attendant will nd that the bore is more or less clear of solid matter and this fact will indicate to him that the bolt is broken.
I do not wish to confine myself to the specific construction of stay bolt structure herein shown and described.r but my improvements may be made applicable to any such structure in which the bolt may be provided with a bore in which material sensitive to the action of water may be contained.
Having fully described mv invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
