VALVE-GRINDING MACHIN E.
Application lerl April 23, 1917.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Re it known that we, Divin D. AnoniBaLD and Fnixxx L. LoUANDns, citizens of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas, State of Ohio, `have invented certain new and useful improvements in Valve-Grinding Machines; and we do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for grinding gas engine valve seats, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character adapted to grind a plurality of valve seats at a single operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to be secured to the gas engine cylinders after the cylinder heads have been removed therefrom.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which is adjustable to engines of different typesand sizes.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1, is a side elevation of the device,
Fig. 2, is an end elevation,
Fig. 3, is a top plan view, and,
Fig. 4, is a detail sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. l.
Referring more particularly to the dra\vings, the reference character 5 designates the top face of the cylinder block after the cylinder head has been removed therefrom, and 6 represents the bolt openings in which the bolts which secure the cylinder head in place engage.
In carrying out the invention, a plurality of standards 7 are employed, the lower end of which are provided with a right angular foot S which is perforated to receive a bolt 9. This bolt is adapted to engage in one of the openings 6 in the cylinder block, and threaded on the same is a nut 10 which clamps the foot member 8 of the standard 7 between itself and the cylinder block. 1t is to be understood that there are four of the vertically extending standards 7 and that they are arranged one at each corner of the cylinder block, and connecting said vertically extending standards in pairs are transversely extending bars 11. The vertically extending standards 7 are each pro- Speeication of Letters Patent.

vided with a longitudinally extending slot 12, and the t 'ansversely extending bars 11 are likewise provided each with a longitudinally extending slot 13, and passing' through said slots 12 and 13 is a bolt 11i by which the transversely extending bars 1l are adjusted with relation to the vertically extending standards 7 to which they are connected.
The transversely extending bars 11 are each provided with a slot 14 and engage in'said slots is a longitudinally extending bar 15 which is provided with a set screw 16 by which the bar 15 is secured against movement relative to the transversely extending bar 11 when it has been properly adjusted. The longitudinally extending bar 15 is provided with a plurality of cut out portions 17, and slidably mounted in eachy of said cut out portions 17 is a block or the like 18 which is provided with a perforation and projecting through each of the sliding blocks 18 is a shaft 19 the lower end of which is tapered as at 2O to engage the top face of the valve 21. Secured to the upper end of each of the shafts 19 is a gear or sprocket 22 .which is secured to the shaft in such a manner as to rotate the same upon rotary movement being imparted to said sprocket. Extending vertically from each end of the longitudinally extending bar 15 is a standard 23 which is adjustably secured in place by means of a set screw 24, and loosely mounted on the upper end of each of the said standards is a sprocket wheel 25, while intermediate the ends of said bar 15 is a shaft 26 to the upper end of which is secured a gear or sprocket 27 which latter is provided with a squared end for the reception of the squared socket 28 of a driving crank 29. Passing around each of the sprockets 25 is a chain 30 which chain engages each of thesprockets 22 and the sprocket 27.
The operation of the device is described as follows:
The vertical standards 7 are irst'secured to the upper end of the cylinder block, and the transversely extending bars 11 are adjusted by means of the set screws 14e to properly position the longitudinally extending bar 15. After the longitudinally extending bar 15 has been properly adjusted, the blocks 18 are adjusted so that their openings will lie substantially over the center of its respective valve 21 in which position it is secured by means of a set screw 31.
With the parte in this position it. will be seen that upon rotation ot the eranl; 29, the Shaft 2G will be rotated and through the inediuiu ot the chain 30, rotar'v niovonient will he imparted to each of the eli-ail i9, and. through the inediuni of Said Shaft each ot' the valve inenil ers 2l will he rotated in their respective valve SeatS to regrind the Surface thereof.
By Constrneting` tho nienilaera T, ll. l5, and 18, in such a manner that tliejv are adjustable ivith roe-peet to each other, it ie apparent. that the device adapted for use with automobile engines ot various types and eizee, and that any number of shafts i9 and gears nia \7 he einplojved tor the purpoee ot grinding' the valves of inotors in which an)7 nuniler ot valves niajf' be enr ploved.
lilaving` thus described the in vontion, vvliat iS olaiined is:
l. The eoniliination ivith a pluralityT oit supports adapted to be Secured in spaced relation to each other upon a cylinder block, of cross nieniliers adapted to he Connected for vertical adjustment to pairs oi7 said Sup ports` and havingl longitudinal Slots therein, a longitudinal har engaged in Said slots, nieans for taetening' the longitudinal liar in ite` adjusted position in said slots, Said longitudinal har having a plurality of out out portions, bloelis slidalily mounted in the out out portione, ineane for fastening the blocks in their adjusted positions, valve grinding members engaged in said blocks and having gears at their upper ender` and a driven endlee chain supported to have the opposed parallel stretches thereof engaged with the gears at oppooite Sides ot the saine.
2. 'llhe combination vvitli a. plurality of supports adapted to be secured in spaced relation to each other upon a cylinder block, ot' Cross ineinlaera adapted to be connected for vertical adjustment to pairs of Said eupportS and having;n longitudinal Slots therein, a longitudinal bar engaged in said Slots, ine-ane` for fastening the longitudinal bar in ite adjusted position in said slots, Said lon `Q'itudinal har having; a pluralityv of eut out portions.v blocks SlidaliljY mounted in the out out portions. means for fastening' the loloelts` in their adjusted positions, valve grinding inenihers engaged in said blocks and haviupa gears at their upper ende, a driven endless chain Supported to have the oppoSed parallel stretches thereof engaged with the lgears at opposite Sides of the saine, and means Sup ported h v the longitudinal har for imparting' movement to the chain.
