IMPROVEMENT IN TAPS FOR LEQUID PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,664, dated June 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBIN WARTH, of Stapleton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Taps for Liquid Packages and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a central section of my valve. Fig. 2 is a plan or face view of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the valvebody detached. Fig. 4 is a plan or face view of the valve-plate detached.

This invention relates to an improvement on that class of taps for which a patent was granted to me June 20, 1871, N 0. 116,244.. This improvement consistsin the arrangement on the valve-supporting plate of a raised flange which embraces the valve-seat, and' one portion of which bears closely against the edge of the packing-disk of the valve, while another portion thereof forms the spout, said packingdisk being firmly secured to the valve-body, which is cast on the head of an ordinary screw in such a manner that when the valve is raised from its seat the packing-disk bears against the circular section of the raised flange, and the contents of the package are compelled to discharge through the spout section of said raised flange.
The valve is cast with a hub, the inner end of which is formed with a feather-edge, so that when the packing-disk is slipped oversaid hub it can be readily secured in position by pressing out the feather-edge.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the valve-plate, which is provided with a rim, a, by means of which it is secured to the package. The central portion of this valve-plate forms the seat b for the valve B, and to the inner side of the valve -plate is secured a bridge, 0, which is provided with an internal screw-thread to receive the valve-operating screw d. The valve-body is cast on the head of the screw d, and it is provided with a hub,
c, projecting from its inner surface, and furnished on its end with a feather-edge, f, (best seen in Figs. 1 and 3.) By slipping the packing-disk 9 over the hub e and turning down the feather-edge, as shown in Fig. 1, a firm connection is established between the valvebody and the packing-disk, while in my patent No. 116,244. the pacikng-disk is described as being placed on the valve-seat. The object of this change will be presently explained. The valve-seat b is surrounded by a raised flange, h, the principal portion of which forms the segment of a circle, while the remainder thereof is made to project outward, so as to form the spout i. The inner diameter of the circular section of said flange is equal to the diameter of the packing-disk g, so that when the valve is inserted into the valve plate said circular section hugs the packing-disk closely.
If the valve is raised from its seat, therefore, the packin g-disk continues to bear against the circular section of the raised flange, and the contents of the package are compelledto discharge through the spout; whereas, if said circular section should not hug the packingdisk the liquid would sputter out on all sides of the valve, to the great inconvenience of the consumer, particularly if the package is filled with petroleum oil or other liquids containing gases, which subject said liquid to a certain pressure.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The raised flange h on the valve-seat, composed of a circular section and of a spout section, in combination with a valve, B, provided with a packing-disk g, which fits the circular section of the raised flange, substantially as described.
2. The arrangement of a hub on the valve body, said hub being provided with a featheredge, which serves to secure the packing-disk to the valve-body, substantially in the manner set forth.
