Specification of Letters Patent.
unease-eon.
Application filed December 8, 1917. Serial No. 206.216.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, Mrn rns E. THoMPsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntsburgin the county of Geauga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease-Guns, of which the following is a SPQClfiCMZIOIL This invention relates to grease guns for automobiles and other machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a gun of this character which may be filled when disassembling it and which may be partially or completely filled in a very short time without soiling the clothing or the hands of the user.
Another object is to provide a grease gun which has a filling opening in one side wall which when closed will form a grease tight inclosure for the grease and which has a plunger fitted for forcing the grease out through a nozzle.
Another object is to provide a gun of this character which shall be compact and simple to operate and may be filled and carried in the vehicle ready for usev when desired.
With the foregoing and other ob]ects 1n View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it bein understood that changes in the precise em' odiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a gun constructed in accordance with this invention with'a section shown in expanded Position ready for filling,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the section closed and the piston in the act of forcing out the grease, parts being broken out to illustrate the interior construction and for convenience in illustration, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The grease gun constituting this invention comprises two cylindrical sections 1 and 2 telescopically engaged, the section 2 being shown double walled to form a pocket 3 to receive the wall of section 1 as is shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. By so constructing these sections, obviously they may be telescoped without forming any obstructions on the interior of the gun cylinder such as grease is designed to be inserted for filling the gun, it being understood that the lower section 1 is the section which contains the:
grease. This opening 4 has its upper end made inverted V-shaped with a notch or rounded recess 5 at its apex to receive a hutton 6 carried by the upper end of section 1 when the sections are at the limit of their extreme telescoping position as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. This button 6 hence operates to limit the inward movement of section 1 when engaged with said notch or reces's 5 and limits its outward movement by engagement with a ring 7 arranged peripherally around the outer face of section 2 and fixed thereto in any suitable manner, being either formed integral therewith or secured thereto as desired.
Section 2 is preferably closed at its upper end by a removablecap 8 which has threaded engagement with said section as is shown clearly in Fig. 2 and is rovided with an upstanding ferrule 9 to orm a guide and support for the'piston rod 10 which passes through said ferrule and an opening in cap 8 and enters the body of the gun being provided at its inner end with a piston 11. This piston 11 may be of any suitable or desired construction, but is here shown composed of a leather washer 12 having metal clamping plates 13 and 14 on its opposite faces mounted on the lower end of the rod 10 and held in clamping engagement with the member 12 2y nuts 15 and 16 as is shown clearly in The piston rod 10 is provided at its outer or upper end with a handle 17 preferably constructed in the form of a cross bar although obviously it may be of any other suitable or desired construction provided it be so formed as to afford a proper hand grip for the operator.
The lower end of section 1 has a closure in the form of a cap 18 with a nozzle 19 depending therefrom and: through which the ease is designed to be ejected, said cap 18%ieing preferably inverted cone-shaped to facilitate the discharge of the grease.
In the operation of this gun, it will thus be seen that when it is desired to insert grease therein that the sections 1 and 2 are moved away from each other to expose the with the oper- Patented an; 2%,"1913.
placed in section 1 an moved toward shown in Fig.
the opening 4: in section 2. The n is then ready for use and the grease contained therein may be forced out through the nozzle 19 hy'moving the .piston inwardly by means of pressure exerted on the handle. 17.
lhe construction of the n provides for the ready fillin thereof wit out in any way soiling either tie hands or the clothing of the user and when filled, it may he closed and carried in an automobile or in a tool kit ready for use when necessary.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have 'described the principle oil operation of the invention together with the device which i now consider to he the host embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may he made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
'1 claim 1. A grease gun comprising a cylinder composed of two telesco ing sections, one of which is double wal ed to receive the other, said double walled section having a filling opening in one side thereof, means for limiting the opening and closing movement of said sections, a discharge nozzle, and a piston operable to force the contents or": said gun out through said nozzle.
2. A rease gun comprising two telescoping cylindrical sections, one of which is double walled and provided with an opening in one side thereof, a pocket termed between the walls of said sectlon to receive the other section, a laterally projecting stop carried by one of said sections for engaging a cooperating element on the other for limiting the in composed increase ward movement of the sections relatively to each other, and means carried by said double walled section for engaging said element to limit their opening movement.
3. A grease gun comprising a cylinder of two telescopmg sections, one of which is double walled to receive the other, said double walled section having a filling opening in one side thereof, a discharge nozzle and a iston operable to force the contents of said gun out through said nozzle.
.4. Av ease gun comprising two telescoping cylindrical sections, one of which is double walled with the walls spaced apart to form a pocket between them to receive the other section, said douhlewalled section having an opening in one side wall, the side walls of said opening converging toward their upper ends,'a lateral projection carried by the 'other section and adapted to engage the apex of said opening, a ring surroundin said double walled section at its lower en and designed to engage said projection for limiting the opening movement of said sections, and a piston operable for forcing out the contents of the gun.
5. A grease un comprising two telescoping cylindrica sections, one of which is double walled with the walls spaced apart to form a socket between them to receive the other section, said double walled section having an opening in one end, the side walls of said opening converging toward their upper ends, a lateral projection carried by the other section and adapted to engage the apex of said opening, a stop on the other section designed to engage said projection for limiting the opening movement of said sections, and a piston operable for forcing out the ontents or the gun.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MYRTUS THOMPSON.
