T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL J. E. TAXBOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVIining-lhlachine Trucks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to mining machine trucks of the sort primarily intended'for supporting the mining machine not only during transportation, but also during the cutting operations.
The principal object is to provide an apparatus by means of which a series of cuts can be made radially from a center. A fur ther object is to provide a truck so constructed that a mining machine upon it can be readily turned end for end as desired. Another object is to provide, in combination with a truck having means for reversing the position of the mining machine, mechanism whereby the mining machine motor can be connected with the truck wheels, when the mining machine is in either position. Still other objects will be apparent from the following specification.
Of the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment of my invention- Figure 1 is a plan view showing the truck with the mining machine removed.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the truck with the mining machine removed.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional View taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing the mining machine upon the truck.

Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view indicating one way in which an apparatus embodying my invention may be used.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents as a whole the main base frame of the truck. This frame is preferably made up of rolled steel sections such as channels. The frame has side members 1*, 1 and transverse end members 1 1 The frame 1 is mounted by means of suitable bearings on transverse rotatable axles 2, 2, to which are secured track wheels 3, 8. At each end of each axle 2 there is a sprocket wheel 4. The uses of these sprocketwheels will be referred to hereinafter.
5 is a mining machine supporting frame rotatably mounted on the main truck frame 1 by means of a suitable turntable. This turntable, as shown in the drawings, comprises a ring 6 which is preferably angleshaped in cross section with its horizontal flange extending outward from the top of its vertical flange. The ring is mounted between the side members 1, 1 of the frame 1 and between two cross members 7, 7, which extend transversely between the side members. The vertical flange of the ring ongages the vertical webs of the channel sections and the horizontal flange rests upon and is secured to the top flanges of the chan nel. sections. 8 is a second ring also channel shaped in cross section and also constructed with its horizontal flange extending outward from the top of its vertical flange. The ring 8 is of such size that its vertical flange will lie just within the vertical flange of the ring 7 to be held thereby against lateral movement, rotary movement, however, being freely permitted. Interposed between the horizontal flange of the ring 8 and the horizontal flange of the ring 7 are a number of rollers 9, 9, which are held in place and guided by rings 10, 10.
It is upon the ring 8 that the frame 5 before referred to is mounted. This frame 5 comprises two bars 11, '11, which are preferably angleshaped in cross-section with their vertical flanges extending upward at the outer sides. These bars 11, 11 are parallel throughout a part of their length; but at one end of the frame they diverge in order to be adapted for receiving the mining machine which will be later described. The bars 11, 11 are connected at their ends by cross pieces 11 and 11 Near each end of the main truck frame 1 is a transverse bar or beam 12 which is preferably channel-shaped in cross section. The
beams 12 are of such a height that they can engage the under surfaces of the bars 11, 11 of the frame 5 to give additional support to the frame. It is obvious that these beams 12, 12 prevent either end of the frame from swinging downward in case of uneven loading. Near one end of each of the bars 11 is a latch 13 which is so located that it can, when the frame 5 is in central position, engage a suitable aperture 13 in the top flange of one or the other of the beams 12, 12 to lock the frame 5 against rotary n'iovement.
At one end of the frame 5, preferably at the end at which the bars 11 diverge, there are secured two hinges 11, 11, for the attachment of jacks 15, 15. These jacks are adjustable in length by means of hand nuts 16, 16, and by being extended by means of the nuts can be forced into engagement with the floor of the mine to lock the frame 5 against lateral movement in either direction.
At the end of the frame 5 opposite to that at which the. bars 11 diverge there is mounted a transverse rotatable shaft 17 which carries at its inner end near the center of the frame a bevel gear wheel 18 and at its outer end a sprocket wheel 19 in longitudinal alinemcnt with the sprocket wheels 4, 4 at the corresponding ends of the axles, 2, 2. 20 is a bevel gear wheel meshing with the bevel .Q'ear wheel 18. This wheel is secured to a suitable lone'itudiiml shaft mounteu in the bearing 21 on the frame 5. At the other end of this shaft is a clutch element adapted to be engaged by a similar clutch element on the mining machine to be described.
As the ends of the truck frame 1 are similar, and as the turntable is centrally located with respect to the axles, the frame 5 can be turned end for end on the truck whenever this is found necessary or convenient. As each end of each axle is provided with a sprocket wheel 1 it is always possible to connect the sprocket wheel 19 on the shaft 17 with one or the other of the axles by means of a chain such as that indicated at 23. It will be understood that this chain 23 is used only when it is desired to drive the truck from the mining machine motor in amanner to be described, and that it is removed when it is desired to turn the frame 5 on the main truck frame. Preferably a second chain 21 is provided for connecting the sprocket wheels 4, 4: at the side of the truck opposite to that on which the sprocket wheel 19 is located.
The breast mining machine shown in Figs. 4: and 5 is of standard construction and need not, therefore, be described in detail. For purposes of illustratimi I have shown a machine similar to that described in the patent to E. R. Merrill, No. 798,108, dated August 29, 1905, and reference can be had to that patent for details not herein shown. For present purposes it will be sutlicient to point out that the machine comprises a main bed frame adapted to rest directly upon the bars 11, 11 of the frame 5. Secured to the frame 25 there is preferably an adjustable jack 26 which can en age the roof of a mine to assist in holding the machine against movement during the cutting operation. There is also a carriage or cutter frame 2 which is longitudinally movable with respect to the bed frame. Mounted upon this cutter frame is an endless cutter chain 28 which 'arries cutters 29. For driving the cutter chain there is mounted upon the carriage or cutter fran'ie an electric motor 30 which is connected to the chain by means of suitable gearing 31. Mechanism is provided for antomatically feeding the carriage or cutter frame backward and forward on the bed frame. This mechanism comprises a transverse rotatable shaft which is provided at its end with pinions 32, which mesh with racks 33, 33 secured to the bed frame. Mounted upon the transverse shaft are worms or spiral gear wheels 34 and 85 with which mesh worms 3G and 87 on parallel longitudinal shafts. These parallel longitudinal shafts carry at their forward ends work wheels 38 and 39 which mesh with a worm 40 on the vertical driving shaft of the gearing 81. The wheels 34 and 35 are loosely mounted on the transverse feed shaft and either of them can be secured to it by means of the clutch 4:1. The clutch 41 is provided with an operating lever 12. By means of this lever either of the work or spiral gear wheels 3+t or 35 can be connected with the transverse feed shaft. hen one wheel is connected the carriage or cutter frame will be advanced relatively slowly and when the other wheel is connected the carriage or cutter frame will be retracted relatively rapidly.
The longitudinal shaft which carries the work or spiral gear 36 also carries a clutch element 43 which is adapted to engage the clutch element on the truck when the ma chine is in the proper position. It will be obvious that when the clutch elements are engaged, power can be transmitted from the motor to the mining machine through the shafts and gearing which have been described to drive the wheels of the truck.
The mining machine can be locked in place on the frame 5 by means of the devices indicated at 17, 17.
The preferred method of operating an apparatus embodying my invention is indicated in Fig. 6. A track 5% is laid down the center of the room and the machine is run into the room by its own power. \Vhen the machine has reached the proper place the wheels are blocked preferably by means of the deviceindicated in Fig, 2 which com prises two blocks 45, 45 adapted to engage the wheels. Between these blocks 45, 45 is an adjustable strut 46 by means of which the blocks can be forced apart and into firm engagement. with the wheels and the track. Thechain 23 is then removed and the frame 5 unlocked from the main truck frame 1. The frame 5 with the mining machine is then swung to one side, and the machine is jacked in position in the usual way, use be ing also made of the jacks 15, 15 which engage the mine floor to prevent the frame 5 from swinging. The mining machine is then started and a horizontal laterally eX- tending kerf is cut into the coal. After the kerf cut the cutter or carriage frame is retracted, the jacks are loosened and the ma chine is swung into position for another cut. The machine is secured in this sec end position and the mining machine is then started, a second cut into the coal being made. In Fig. 6 the full lines show the machine completing one out, and the dotted lines show it completing another cut. This operation is repeated, the machine being swung on the turntable, until a complete kerf semi-circular in outline has been cut into the coal. Then the machine is removed from the room by its own power and the coal is broken down in the usual way. It will be noted that by the use of this apparatus, the room has a semi-cylindrical face instead of a plane face. This, however, is not a disadvantage but, on the contrary, is a distinct advantage, as loading of the coal is made easier.
By means of an apparatus embodying my invention a distinct saving of time and labor is effected. I am enabled not only to save the time ordinarily required for unloading the machine from the truck and reloading it, but also to save a large part of the time usually consumed in moving the machine from one position to another. By means of the turntable mounting, the ma chine after the acks have been loosened can be very easily and quickly moved and rap idly placed in exactly the desired position. The time between cuts is in this way very materially reduced. If at any time it is desired to use the mining machine in the usual way apart from the truck, the machine can be easily removed after removing the locking devices 47, 47.
l/Vhile I have herein referred to and described a mining machine of the breast type it will be understood that the invention is not so limited and other machines of othertypes can be used. And it will furthermore be understood that the method of use herein described is merely the preferred method and that other methods can be used in accordance with the working conditions and in of mining machine and a mining machine supporting frame mounted on the truck for rotation about a vertical axis and provided with skids for supporting a mining machine and guiding it for movement longitudinally.
2. The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining machine supporting frame rotatably mounted on the truck and provided with skids for supporting a mining machine and guiding it for movement longitudinally, and a releasable lock for holding the supporting frame in fixed position with respectto the truck.
3. The combination of a wheeled truck, a turntable centrally mounted on the truck, a mining machine supporting frame on the turntable and provided with skids for supporting a mining machine and guiding it for movement longitudinally, and means for locking the supporting frame in either of two positions with its longitudinal lines parallel with the longitudinal lines of the truck.
4. The combination of a wheeled truck, a turntable, a mining machine supporting frame on the turntable provided with skids for supporting a mining machine and guiding it for movement longitudinally, and devices on the truck supplemental to the turn table for supporting the said frame.
5. The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining machine supporting frame mounted on the truck for rotation. about a vertical axis and provided with skids for supporting a mining machine and guiding it for movement longitudinally, and a power receiving device connectible with the truck wheels and adapted to transmit power thereto from a mining machine on the supporting frame.
6. The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining machine supporting frame mounted on the truck for rotation about a vertical axis and provided with skids for supporting a mining machine and guiding it for movement longitudinally, and a power transmitting mechanism adapted for the transmission of power from a mining machine on the supporting frame to the truck wheels when the supporting frame is parallel with the truck.
