Description

AMOS A. JAQUA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,606, dated June 4, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
Be it known that I, AMos A. J AQUA, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Earth-Closets or Commodes; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the annexed drawing, forms a full specification of the same.
My invention relates to earth-closets or commodes 5 and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the manner of construction and operation of the closets, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the earth-closet or commode with the lid raised. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of same. Fig. 3 is a front internal View of same.
4The construction, operation, and relative arrangement of the component parts of my invention are as follows:
Inthe drawing, A is the frame of closet; B, the tub or bucket for receiving the excrement. This tub B isplaced upon the movable car C,which is operated by the two cranks or levers a. and a', one on each side of the closet, and the connecting rods b and b. These cranks or levers a and a are secured at their centers m to frame A, and are also attached to the carC and lidD. Within the earthreservoir E, at the top of the closet, are two cylinders, c Vand c', (see Figs. 2 and 3,) and their shafts, d and d', for conveying the earth into the tub B as it passes under 'the discharge-orifice s of the hopper. These shafts d and d rest upon metal bearings t and fi', which bearings are placed upon the outside of box h, formed for holding the cylinders .c and c. This box h is made with an opening at its extreme top end for the-reception of earth, and likewise an opening at the bottom end f'or the discharge of same. In connection with the cylinders c and c is an endless band, g, which passes over and around both cylinders. .Attached to the endless band g are projecting arms or buckets L, for taking A up and depositing the earth over the excrement in the tub or bucket B as it passes from front to back of closet, (see Fig. 2.) Upon the long shaft d of the forward cylinder c is placed the gear-wheel K and plain wheel K', connected together by a small cylinder. These wheels K and K are constructed so that they move back and forward on the long shaft d. The gear-wheel K is operated by the rack f of corresponding gear. This rack f passes through and rests against the rock-shaft p,
'(shown in Figs. 2 and 3,) which is provided with dan ges for the purpose of retaining it in position. On each end of the rack f are the projecting flanges r and rf, which operate to shift the gear back and forward on the long shaft d. This rack f connects with one end ofthe lever e, which lever is secured at its fulcrum n to the frame A of closet, and operated by the connecting-rod o at the other end of the lever e. This connecting-rod o is secured to the lid D of the closet at its under side; the whole-operated by raising and lowering the lid D.
I claim as my inventionl. An earthcloset or commode with the arms or levers a and a', connecting-rods b and b', cylinders c and o with endless band g passing over them, shafts d and d', lever e, connecting-rod o, rack f with ilanges r and 1^', gear and plain wheels K and K', box h, bearings z' and i', rock-shaft p, reservoir E, car C, tub or bucket B, lid D, substantially as arranged, and operating as hereinbefore set forth.
2. In an earth-closet or commode I claim the combination of the arms or levers a and a', connecting-rods b and b', cylinders c and c with endless band g passing over them, shafts d and d', levers e, connecting-rod o,rack f with flanges r and r', box h, bearings t and Grokshaft p, reservoir E, car C, tub or bucket B, lid D, the whole substantially as arranged, and operating as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of March, A. D. 1872.
AMOS A. JAQUA.
In presence of- LoUIs W. FROST, GHARLEs G. 00E.
