" UNITED STATES AMOS A. JAQUA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,780, dated February 20, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, AMOS A. JAQUA, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Earth-Closets or Commodes, of which the following is a specification:
The nature and object of my invention consists in constructing earth closets or commodes in such a manner that the tub or bucket for receiving the excrement, by being placed upon a car, shall move from back to front and vice versa, by the raising and lowering ofthe lid of the closet, which process at the same time revolves a cylinder that is placed in the Attached to this cylinder are arms or buckets which discharge and spread the earth thoroughly over the deposit in the tub, while it moves backward, therebyT preventing -all odor and dust.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective of the closet or commode with the lid a little raised. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a front internal view.
A is the frame of the earth-closet or commode; C, the tub or bucket for receiving the excrement; D, the car upon which the tub O is placed, and moves from back to front of machine, and vice versa, by means of the band or sti-ape, which is attached to the under part of the car D, and passes through the loose pulley b at the front of the closet, (see Fig. 2 5) thence carried to the rea-r of said closet, and passed twice around the roll or shaft d. Said shaft is attached to the bottom of the frame A 5 thence carried to the. forward part of the car D, and connected at the front of same by any necessary appliance. The roll or shaft d is operated by the band f, which passes over its extreme end and connects with the pulley Gr, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) bearing upon the shaft a, which rests upon the metal ear h, affixed to `the side of frame A. Attached to the shafta is the gear-wheel Z, said gear-wheel being connected with the lid B by a segment of corresponding gearing P, (see Figs. l and 2.) The whole in combination is operated by raising. andlowering the lidB. In the upperpart of the earth-closet is the reservoir K for holding the dry earth, with a metal bed or bottom L, formed to correspond with the form of the cylinder m, which is placed inside of and near the bottom of said reservoir K. The said cylinder m is provided with the arms or buckets n, so that when the cylinder mrevolves the arms or buckets n take up and deposit a certain quantity of earth over the excrement in the tub C as it passes under the discharge opening ofthe reservoir K. At one end of the cylinder m is the long shaft o, upon which is placed the gearwheel p and plain wheelp connected together by the smaller cylinder c. These are so constructed that they move back and forth on the shaft o, (seeFig. 3.) These wheels P and P are also connected with the lid B by the segment of gearing H, and provided with flanges so that as the lid B is raised the segment II passes between the two wheels P and P on the shaft o, which brings the tub O forward; and on lowering the said lid the tub passes back, and the gear are brought in connection, thereby causing the cylinder m torevolve, and the arms 'or buckets vn to deposit the earth over the deposit in tub, thus preventing all odor and dust from arising.
I claim as my invention- Y l. The lid B, carrying the racks H P, in coinbination with the cylinder m and its gear, reservoir K, gear-wheel l, belts e f, pulleys or drums b d, and car D with its bucket C, the whole so arranged thatwhen the lid is raised or lowered the car will move from the back to the front, and vice versa.
2. In combination with the 'above the shifting motion for shifting the loose gearing p p on the cylinder-shaft O back and forth, for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 26th day of October, 1871.
AMOS A. JAQUA. fL. s.) Witnesses:
