COMBINATION-LOCK.
' Application filed June 2, 1917. Serial No. 172,464;
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FnANorsco, L. TAYLOR,
a citizen of Mexico, residing at Monclova, in
the State of Coahuilaand Republic of Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a combination lock and has for one of its (objects, the provision of a device of this character, whereby the locking bolt is held from being moved into aretractedor unlocked position by combination means 1ocated within the lock casing.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a pair of disks j ournaled within the casing and having a series of notches in the periphery thereof, some of which are adapted to be alined for the purpose'of receiving means upon the locking bolt so that the locking bolt may be manually retracted or moved into an unlocked position.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a dog having a pair of legs adapted to enter the notches of the disks when properly arranged so that the locking bolt may be retracted or moved into an unlocked position.
A. still further object of this invention is the provision of a combination lock of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in cer tain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an end view of a combination lock constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view illustrating the combination means for locking the locking bolt against movement, and the means of retracting the same.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view illustrating the dog upon the locking. bolt received within the notches of the disks, r
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the 1111 5+5 of Fig. 4.
1 Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective View of the locking bolt illustrating the dog formed thereon. V
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a lock casing having a removable cover 2, which is secured thereon by means of fasteners 3. The casing 1 is adapted to be set into a door 1 as shown in Fig. :1, and the end plate thereof is provided with an opening 6 to permit the beveled end 7 of a locking bolt 8 to move eXteriorly of the casing for the purpose of engaging an ordinary keeper, (not shown). The outer end of the locking bolt is slidably mounted upon a supporting member 9 secured transversely in the casing 1 as shown in Fig. 2. The rear end or inner end of the locking bolt 8 is reduced and bifurcated as shown at 10 for the purpose of receiving a combined guide and stop 11 secured or carried by the cover 2. A coiled spring 12 is mounted upon the reduced end of the locking bolt 8 and has one end disposed against the combined guide and stop and its other end against the shoulder formed by the reduced end of the locking belt for the purpose of normally urging the beveled end 7 into en gagement with the keeper (not shown). The casing 1 has journaled therein, a knob spindle 13, which extends transversely thereof and has knobs 1% secured to each end thereof. A member 15 is removably secured to the spindle 13 and has formed thereon, an extension 16 adapted to fit within the notch 17 of the locking bolt, whereby upon turning the knobs 14 in a certain direction, the locking bolt 8 will be retracted or moved into an unlocked position against the tension of the spring 12. Immediately upon releasing the knobs, the locking bolt is moved into locked position under the infiuence of the spring.
A substantially U-shaped dog 18 is formed upon the upper longitudinal edge of the locking bolt 8 and is adapted to be engaged and received by a combination means, which will be hereinafter described. One arm por- A supporting plate 20 is secured, within.
the casing l and has threaded thereto, a
bolt 21, on which are journaled disks22. and
23. The disks 22 and 23 are provided with a series of notches 2% in the peripheries thereof. A pair of the notches 24; of each of the disks 22 and 23 are so arranged in relation to each other that they will receive the arm portions of" the dog 18, whereby the locking bolt 8 may be moved to a retracted or unlocked position by the rotation of the knobs 1d. The notches in the disk 23' are narrower than the notches-inthe disk 22 for the purpose of preventing persons from feeling out or getting the correct combination or positioning of the disks 22 and 28; The beveled end 1901? one of the arm portions is: especially provided so as to extend into the reduced notches of the disk 23.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying draw.- ings, it will be noted that when the com bination of the disks 22 and 23 has been correctly set, the locking bolt 8 is free to bemoved intoand out of the casingfor the purpose of acting as a lock. \Vhen the lock ing bolt 8 has been moved into engagement with, the keeper, (not shown), and: the combination of the disks 22 and 231 upset, the end of the longest arm portion of the dog 18 will engage the outer face of the disk 22-, thus preventing the locking bolt 8- from being moved into an unlocked or retracted position.
\Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
.091" 011 this plt'cnt may be. obtainedior.
Having thus described. my invention, what I claim, is
l. A lock comprising a casing having an opening in one end wall, a locking bolt slidable-insaid casing and opening and having its inner end bifurcated, a lug formed on said casing and disposed in the bifurcated end to act as a stop and guide to the looking bolt, means urging the bolt outwardly of the casing, means for retracting the bolt, a wall in said casing, a pin secured to said wall, disks journaled onsaid pin and having notches in the peripheries thereof and the unequally spaced notches of one disk being smaller than the notches of the other disk, anda substantially U-shaped dog formed on thelocking bolt and having one arm portion longerthan the other. and tapered, the arm portions adapted to extend through a certain pair of notchesin. thedisks when prop erly alined and the tapered arm portion adapted to extend into the smaller notch of the pair of alined notches.
2; A permutation. lock including a sliding bolt, bolt retracting means, rotatably mounted disks provided in: their peripheries with unequally spaced notches, certain of the notches in one of; said disks being narrower thanthe' others in said disk and than those in the other disk, and a lug carried by said bolt and having a pair of arms of unequal lengths, said arms being spaced apart. a distance equal to the distance between a pair of notches in each of: saidv disks, and. said longer arm. having a. reduced extension. to enter oneof the narrower notches when-the disks are not properly set.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of. two witnesses.
