PATENT. OFFICE.
LOUIS GIEBBIOH,'OF OTTUMWA, IOWA, ASSIGNOB TO CAROLINE GIEBRIOH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN REFRIGERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,593, dated June 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, LOUIS GLEBRIoH, of Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Refrigerators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specificationand' to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a partly horizontal section of the same.
This invention has relation to refrigerators; and consists in the construction and novel arran gement of ice-receptacle, cooling-chambers,
water-tank, and ventilators, all substanthlly as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents a refrigeratorcase of ordinary construction. The interior of said refrigerator is divided into an upper and lower part by means of a metallic tank, B. The upper division is partitioned ofl' into three compartments, 0 1) O. D is an ice-receptacle, and has an open slotted bottom. The water from the ice drains into the tank B, and is carried ofi' by a pipe, I), as waste, or may be used for drinking purposes. In the latter case any suitable filtering material may be placed in the water-tank. The ice-compartment is provided with a sliding and a hinged door, marked, respectively, E F. The compartments O O and G are cooling-chambers. Ventilators H are fitted to the bottoms of the compartments 0 0 opening into the tank. These ventilators may be opened or closed, as desired. I represents ventilatingtubes leading from the ends of the tank B to the center of the ice-box, and there connecting with a tube, J, which enters a ventilator, J, on the top of the refrigerator. Flaring tubes 70 conduct the cold air from said tubes into the cooling-chambers, and promote ventilation. k is a flaring ventilator at the top of ice-box, communicating with tube I. The ventilator J is a cylinder with a conical top and capped. The construction of said ventilator causes the air to be condensed therein, and conduces to the perfect ventilation of the ice-box and cooling-chambers, keeping them dry. The lower cooling-chamber may be used for containing fluids, as milk, &c. L represents a milk-can, provided with a central tube, L A tube, L leading from the tank B is. provided with a sliding section, b, which is fitted to the tube L when the milk-can is placed in the refrigerator. M is another tube leading from said tank. A double-elbow section, N, may be fitted to the end'of said tube, and directed to any course desired.
As will be seen the bottom of the water-tank is inclined from both ends toward the center. The water will all flow to this point, and none be allowed to pass through the tubes L M. The whole upper part of the refrigerator may be used for containing ice by removing the partitions separating the compartments 0 from the air-tight ice-box, and also by removing the metallic bottoms of said compartments and substituting slats.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved refrigerator, having the central water-tank B, the lower cooling-chamber G, upper cooling-chamber 0, central upper ice-box D, and ventilating-tubes I all arranged substantially as specified.
2. The milk-cooler L, having the central tube L in combination with the tank B and tubes b L substantially as specified.
3. The combination and arrangement of the conical-capped ventilator J, tube J, ventilating tubes I, flaring sections 70 7c, ice-box D, cooling-chamber O, and tank B, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: LOUIS GIEBRIOH.
NORTON HINSEY, JOHN VAUGHN.
