ERVIN J'. FLANDER, 0F ONEEA, NEW' YORK.
AUGER.
Specification of Lettere Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed March 9, 1317. Serial No. 153,725.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ERVIN J. FLANDER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oneida, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Augers, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to improvements in detachable bits and it is the dominant object of the invention to provide detachable cutters for the bit, whereby, different combinations of cutters varying in size may be vplaced upon the bit shank for boring holes of the desired diameters.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific descri tion hereinafter contained, and wherein tige preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of a bit with my improved cutter applied thereto;
Fig..2 is a horizontal section through the cutter; and
Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of the cutters.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more specifically to the several gures of the said drawings, there is provided the usual bit shank, designated l, the upper extremity of which is tapered as at 2 in order that the same may be in serted into the conventional stock.Y An enlarged portion 3 is formed upon the lower extremity of the bit shank l and is provided topics apparent.
of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by
with a the purpose of Cutters 4: and 5 having pairs of spaced apart openings 6 formed therein, corresponding to the openings in the enlarged portion 3 of the shank l are adapted to be secured thereto through the medium of screws 7. As will be noted2 one of the cutting blades is provided with a scoring cutter while the remaining cutter is provided with a centering point and a lifting cutter.
By detachably engaging the cutters 4 and 5 with the enlarged portion 3 of the shank l, it is to be understood, that cutters varying in size may be arranged upon the bit to permit the boring of holes of different diameters, thus, obviating the necessity of additional outlay for bits of different size.
bviously, the construction shown is capable of considerable modication and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
auger, including, in combination with a shank having an enlarged Hat head, a plurality of cutter blades detachably secured to the opposite sides of said head andprojecting beyond the ends of the same, one of said blades having a centering point and an obliquely disposed lifting cutter provided with a curved cutting edge formed integral therewith, and the remaining blade having a scoring cutter formed on the outer end of the same.
In testimony whereof, I afix my signature hereto.
ERVIN J. FLANDER.
