To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I,PATR10K J. SnLmvAN, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Bostornin the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to automatic fire extinguishers of that class comprising a port closure held on its seat by means that is acted upon by the heat from a fire to release the closure and thereby permit of the discharge of water from the port.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved fire extinguisher of the class indicated and particularly to improve the construction of the fire extinguisher shown and described 1,202,916 granted October 31, 1916.
To these ends the invention consists of a fire extinguisher embodying the peculiar fea-, tures of construction and mode of operation set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out and defined in the claims at the close thereof.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of an automatic fire extinguisher embodying one form of my invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations of the two struts of the extinguisher shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the rocker hereinafter described.
Having reference to the drawings, 1 represents the body of my improved fire extinguisher and 2 the usual yoke projecting from and cast integral with said body.
The body 1 is made with a port 3 therethrough whose discharge end is normally closed by a cap 4; formed upon its outer side with a substantially semi-spherical socket 5 within which is seated a substantially semispherical boss 6 formed upon the under side of a rocker 7. On its top side the rocker 7 is made with two sockets 8 and 9 arranged at opposite sides of the pivot boss 6 to receive the lower ends of two separate struts 10 and 11. The upper ends of the two struts 10 and 11 fit within a socket or'recess 12 provided at the lower inner end of an abutment screw 13. This screw 13 is mounted within the interiorly threaded head 14 of the yoke 2 and is held against accidental displacement by a pin 15 extending through said head and in my Patent Number screw. The screw 13 alsoholds in place the usual deflector 16.
The strut 11 comprises two sections or parts 17 and 18, each formed at one end with a half-round transverse bead 19 and, intermediate its-ends, with ahalf-round transverse groove 20, the bead of eachstrut section occupying the groove of the other section, and the overlapping portionsof said two sections being fastened together by solder 21 fusible at a predetermined temperature.
When the solder 21 is softened by the heat from a fire the pressure of the water in port 3 acts through cap 4, and rocker 7 to shove the section 17 bodily endwise toward section 18, and during this movement the cam surfaces provided by the beads and grooves act to force the two sections 17 and 18 bodily sidewise away from each other thus breaking the solder joint whereupon the closure holding means 7, 10, 17 and 18 collapses completely and its parts are thrown aside by the water discharging from the port 3.
The beads 19 and grooves 20 not only serve to break the solder joint when the closure holding means collapses as above described, but the normal interlocked relationship of these parts prevents creeping at the solder joint.
That I claim is:
1. In a fire extinguisher, thecombination with the port closure and the oppositely disposed abutment, of means for normally holding said closure in port closing position,
said means being supported by and transmitting thrust between said closure and said abutment and comprlslng a rocker pivotally supported near its middle by one of said parts, and two struts each abutting at its one end against the rocker and having its opposite end supported by the other of said parts, with the rocker engaging ends of said struts disposed atopposite sides of the pivot of saidrocker, and solder fusible at a predetermined temperature normally maintaining one of said struts in operative condition but with provision for its collapse when said solder is softened by heat.

3. In a fire extinguisher, the combination with the port closure and the oppositely disposed abutment, of means for normallyholding said closure in port closing position, said means being supported by and transmitting thrust between said closure and said abutment and comprising a rocker pivotally mounted on one of said parts and two separate struts each abutting at its one end against the rocker and at its opposite end against the abutment, with the rocker engaging ends of said struts disposed at opposite sides of the pivot of said rocker and with one of said struts made up of two sections having their ends overlapped and soldered together so as to collapse endwise under pressure from said closure when the solder is softened by heat.
