Specificationof- Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed January 17, 1918. Serial No. 212,329.
fl 0 all whom iii-may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM ROSENBERG,
a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercisers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in as to provide amusement and pleasure with out danger.
which, when in use, does not interfere with, or damage, articles of furniture or the surroundings, including the floor or carpets on which it rests, the device being safe when used by a strenuous child, as it will not overturn and while having the functions of a rocker, is in itself rockerless, means also being provided whereby its equilibrium is normally maintained.
Its use as an exerciser is found valuable in gymnasiums and hospitals in the cure of invalids suffering from back-sprain, etc, and is highly beneficial to anemics when operated in the open air.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing an exerciser made in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially through the center of the same.
In carrying out the invention, use is made of a platform 10, having arcuate ends 11, the side elements being rigidly connected by cross bars 12. Secured to lower surface of the platform are contact elements 14, preferably made of rubber or like pliable material, so as to avoid damage to the carpet or floor upon which the apparatus may rest.
Rising from the center of the side elements of the platform are upright standards 15, containing openings, here shown to be arcuate slots 17, in which are mounted spindles 18, extending from flanges 19, which are secured upon the opposite sides 20, of a movableelement which may take any preferred form, as that of a hobby-horse, sled, car or carriage, provided with a flooring 21, a seat 22, in connection with the back rest 23, and a foot or dash board 24, at the front, the car being an adequate size to contain one or more persons as may be desired.
. Attached to the back-rest 23 and the foot board 2 1, respectively, by brackets 26, are open hooks 27, in which are engaged the ends of helically wound tension springs 28, the opposite ends of which are engaged with similar hooks 29, secured to brackets 30, fixed upon the front and rear elements of the platform at spaced distances apart, as can best be seen in Fig. 2, and it is to be noticed that the springs are so engaged with the Another object is to provide a device hooks that they maybe readily removed therefrom, while the car itself may be maneuvered so that the extending spindles 18, may be withdrawn from the slots 17, permitting the structure to be readily dismounted. The shape of the slots is obviously such that the car will, by gravity, assume normally a central position with reference to the supporting standards.
It is to be understood thatthe word car is to be construed as embracing any suitable element upon which a person may rest and actuate the structure.
In operation, a person sitting upon the seat may, by movement of the body or the limbs, cause the car to oscillate something in the manner of a rocker, this movement being materially augmented by reason of the springs, while a slight to and fro movement is attained, due to the slots in the standards, thereby giving a pleasurable and exhilerating sensation to the rider, calling into action the muscles of the back in a beneficial manner, tending materially to strengthen and improve the same.
While I have shown and described a working embodiment of the exerciser, I do not desire to be held strictly to the exact construction set forth, as manifestly the same may be very considerably modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. In an exerciser the combination with a platform having cushioned contacts adapted to rest upon a substantially level surface, of a pair of standards arranged centrally on the sides of said platform, spindles rotatably mounted in said standards, means permitting said spindles .to move limitedly to and fro in their bearings, a car supported by said I spindles, and a plurality of springs attached.
at one end to the front and rear of said car, and to the front and rear of said platform at their other ends whereby said car is resiliently held in a normally central position.
2. In an exerciser, the combination with a platform having cushioned feet secured upon its lower surface and adapted to rest upon a substantially level surface, of a pair of standards rising from the sides of said platform, arcu-ate' slots formed at the upper end ABRAHAM ROSENBERG.
