New York,
i description; i
,satana To all 'whof/niz'mag/ concern.'
Be it known that we, JULIUsPUnn'rZg a citizen of=tliefUnite`d States,and a resident of the cityof New York, borough of `Brooklyn, in the countylof Kings and State ofNew York, and BAnNnY" Coi-Inma citizen ofthe and a resident .of `the city of borough of Bronx, in the county of Bronxand State-ofv New York, have invented a new and ,Improved 1 Sad-Iron, of which theifollowing is afulhclear, and eXact United States,
An objectlefthe inventionlisfto providefa simple, le'liicient and inexpensive sad iron within which theflame is gas burner. ult is an improvement over our Patent No.l1,150,703 issued August 18,191.5, y
from which it is characterized by the provision-of a "detachable ironingor bottom plate.
vide a sad iron having a detachable ironing plate provided with means entering the hollow of the iron and subject to the direct attack of the flames of the burner.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ironing plate which permits a free access of air through the bottom of the hollow of the iron so as to facilitate combustion within the iron and thereby increase the efficiency of the burner.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combinawith the Slot `8.
generated i-byr a tion and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of our iron partly in section on line 1-1, Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3, Fig. l; and y Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the detachable ironing or bottom plate.
Referring to the drawings, 5 is the hollen7 casing the bottom 6 of which isprovided with interior transverse corrugations against which the flame of a burner 7 is adapted to play. The bottom has also a longitudinal central slot 8 through which air section on line 2 2, 4
is to be supy i platcll, in addition to being heated Another object of the invention is to proi new stonk, n.
tachable bottom plate 1l are adaptedlto en!` ter." 1rFlieselugs 10 are corrugated to match the corrugations which `corrugated lugs the `flame of the burner is adapted toplay and thereby conveyv the heat directly. `."Iheplate lll'has `a centralgroove12 which is adapted to aline grooves 13 leading-from the groove 12ito` the margin of the plate. These groovesl convcyth'cair to thegroove112 from where it enters the slot 8.
Flat surfaces or shoulderswM ofthe plate are adapted to contact with the bottom of the hollow casing, andthereby the ironing directly through the lugs 10, is also heated by contact with the bottom of the casing. The lugs 10 prevent any lateral or longitudinal move- `ment of the plate relative to the casing. To
retain the casing against the bottom, screws 15 are employed, for `which threaded openings 16 are provided in the ironing plate.
The provision of the contacting shoulders 14 gives ample contacting surface between the bottom and the detachable plateand also assures a perfect bearing for the hollow of the casing, with ample opening in the detachable plate for the admission of air to the interior of the casing. The detachable plate 11 has also end openings or grooves 17 which leadto the groove 12 so as to increase the air supply thereto. A
. We claim:
1. A sad iron having a hollow casing the bottom of which has a longitudinal central slot and apertures to each side `of said slot, a bottom plate securable to the bottom of the hollow casing having lugs adapted to enter into the apertures in the bottom, and a burner in the hollow of the casing adapted to play its flames on the bottom of the hollow and the lugs of the .bottom plate; said bottom plate having grooves from the margin for admitting air to the central slot of the bottom of the hollow casing.
2. A sadiron having a hollow casing provided with a central longitudinal slot and apertures to each side of the` slot, a detachable plate having lugs adapted to enter the apertures in the bottom whereby "longitudiof the bottom 6, and against y strilisation-uf Lettersfrateut Patented Ang. 13,1918., r yApplicationllewtovlember 10,1917.` \S"e1al\1\o.201,320. y i
It `has also transverse Gili Copies of this patentv may be obtained for and upon the lugs of the plate engaging the` apertures in the bottom of the hollow casing, said plate having a central longitudinal groove adaptedto register with thev slot in theb-ottom of the hollow casing, said plate having also transverse grooves leading from the margin to the longitudinal groove7 whereby air is supplied to the slot in the bottom of the hollow casing.
Y 3. A sad iron comprising a hollow casing having an internally corrugated bottom, said bottom' having alongitudinal slot and apertures to each side of the longitudinal slot, a bottom plate adapted to contact with the bottom of the hollow casing, lugs on said plate adapted to. project into the hollow of the casing through the apertures in the bottom of the hollow casing, said lugs having a corrugated top, and a burner in said hollow casing adapted to play its llames on the corrugations on the bottom and the corrugations of the lugs, said bottom plate having longitudinal and transverse grooves for supplying air to the central slot of the bottom of the hollow casing.
4. A sad iron comprising a hollow casing the bottom of which has apertures, a bottom platedetachably connected to the bottom of the hollow casing and having projections entering through the apertures into the hollowvcasing, and a burner in the hollow casing adapted to play its Haines upon said proj ections of the bottom plate so as to heat it directly, said projections presenting a corrugated surface within the casing to increase the surface upon which the Haines of the burner are playing.
5. In a sad iron having a hollow casing and a burner in the casing, a detachable bottom plate having projections entering the hollow casing, said projections presenting a corrugated surface within the casing to expose a larger surface to the flames of the burner.
