To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EUGENE H. HELLER and FREDERICK A. SOHROEDER, both of whom arecitizens'o'fthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county'o'fCook and State of Illinois, have invented "certain new and use ful Improvements in Sad-Irons, of which One of the objects of our invention is to construct. an iron of this character which shall have -a'n 'even distribution of heat over its entire smoothing surface.
Another object of our invention is to provide an iron in which the flame from the burner will not issue from the iron during its movement to and fro during 'theironing process.
Other objects-and advantages will appear more fully in the following description of one embodiment "of our invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the iron parly in section to more fully disclose the construction thereof. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the iron shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 83 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4' l: of Fig. 8, and Fig. 5 is a detail section of the gas controlling and mixing valve.
In the structure illustrated, the body of the iron comprises a bottom 2, a rear wall 3, and side walls 4:, forming a combustion chamber 5, in which is arranged a suitable gas burner G. This burner comprises a pipe passing through the rear wall 3 and extending the length of the chamber, being se cured at its front end by being screwed into the nose 7 of the iron.
The pipe is arranged slightly above the bottom 2 of the iron, and is provided on its under side with a double row of gas jets 8, one row on each side of the center of the pipe.- The jets extend radially and are thus disposed to direct the flame laterally and downwardly toward the bottom of the iron.

sulating chamber 9 opening at 10 to the atmosphere, and leaving on either side thereof thick side walls. This chamber 9 communicates with the combustion chamber 5 by means of a longitudinally extending slot 11 located immediately beneath the burner pipe 6, and being slightly wider than the pipe, serving to admit air to the combustion chamber 5. It will be noted that the air is admitted beneath the gas flames through this slot and causes complete combustion in the chamber, so that there will be no odor of gas from the iron. The chamber 9 also communicates with the combustion chamber 5 through a series of draft ports 12 extending throilgh the top of the air chamber and acting to draw a supply of fresh air clear to the end of the air chamber, so that the supply of air will be evenly distributed throughout the entire length of the burner.
By the provision of the insulating chamber 9, we are enabled to obtain an even distribution of heat throughout the entire smoothing surface of the iron, eliminating come hotter at the center than at'the edges,
which should, if anything, be hotter than the center because of the fact that they become chilled first, due to their coming in contact with the damp clothes first. By the arrangement above described, the heat is prevented from passing directly down ward and takes a path through the top of the insulating chamber to the sides of the iron; suliicient heat, however, passing downward at the center of the iron to heat the center to the same temperature as the sides.
The iron is provided with a removable cover 13 having a suitable handle 14 secured thereon. This cover is held in position by a rounded projection 15 formed on a clownwardly extending lug on the underside of the cover and engaging in a recess 16 in the nose of the iron, and a latch 17 pivoted on the rear wall 3 and provided with a hook projection 18 engaging over a cam 19 on the cover. The products of combustion in the chamber 5 escape through suitable openings 20 formed by cutting away the side and rear walls immediately beneath the cover.
The burner pipe 6, after passing through the rear Wall, is extended upwardly and latorally, and is provided at its upper end with an air-mixing and gas-controlling valve 21, to which is attached the gas conduit. This valve comprises a cylindrical casing 22 screwed on the end of the pipe and cut away to provide air intake openings 23. The upper end of the casing is internally screwthreaded to receive the end of the centrally bored plug 24, to which is attached the gas conduit and which, at its lower end, is provided with a reduced extension 25 having a needle point 26. Suitable escape ports 27 are formed on either side of the point, and the point itself is adapted to control the opening 28 in a screw cap 29 fitting over the extension and forming a valve for the escape of the gas into the pipe. When the parts are assembled, the needle valve may readily be adjusted through the intake openings 23.
While we have shown and described one embodiment of our invention, it will be understood that various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the accompanying claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a sad iron, the combination with a body having a combustion chamber formed therein, of a burner located in said chamber, the bottom of the iron being provided with a heat insulating chamber extending the length of the burner and extending a distance beyond the burner on either side thereof, communicating with the atmosphere through an opening in the rear of the iron, and with the combustion chamber through an opening immediately beneath the burner and through openings at the forward end of the iron.
2. In a sad iron, the combination with a body having a combustion chamber formed therein, of a burner located in said chamber above the bottom of the iron and extending longitudinally of the iron from end to end, said burner having jet openings formed therein and located to direct the flame laterally and downwardly, the bottom of the iron having a heat insulating chamber formed therein, extending from the front to the rear thereof beneath the burner and of suliicient width to extend on either side of the burner,
