DEVICE FOR OPERATING WASTE-PLUGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918..
Application filed. May 15, 1918. Serial No. 234,-,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. HnLsLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Up crating Waste-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make an improved device for operating waste plugs, and my invention consists in the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional perspective of a wash bowl provided with a device for operating the waste plug, embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the operating device as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the lower crank arm shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The wash bowl 1 is provided with a drain pipe 2 and an overflow by-pass 3 leading from the top of the bowl to the drain pipe 2. A gravity plug t closes the drain opening in the bottom of the bowl 1 and extends downwardly into the drain pipe 2, so that when the plug 4 is closed the wash bowl may overflow through the bypass 3 to the drain pipe 2. A rock shaft 5 is mounted through a stufling box 6 and has a cam 7 upon its inner end to engage the plug 4: and lift the plug when the rock shaft 5 is operated. The crank arm 8 is fixed upon the rear end of the rock shaft 5..
A counter shaft 9 is mounted parallel with. the crank shaft 5, said counter shaft 9 and crank shaft 5 extending through bearings in the ends of the bar 10. The crank arm 11 is fixed upon the rear end of the counter shaft 9 behind the bar 10 in line with the crank arm 8.
A link 12 in the form of a stiff round rod has a crank formed by bending the upper end at right angles, and this crank is inserted through the outer end of the crank arm 11 and riveted to prevent withdrawal. The lower end of the link 12 is slidingly mount-- ed through bearing 13 and held in adjusted position by set screw 14:. The bearing 13 has a stem inserted rotatably through the outer end of the crank arm 8 and riveted to prevent withdrawal. The set screw 1a is loosened and the crank arms 11 and 8 set in substantially parallel positions and then the set screw 14 is tightened. Stops 15 and 16 extend laterally from the crank arm 8 to engage the link 12 to limit the swing of the crank arm.
A handle 17 is mounted upon the forward end of the rock shaft 9 above the wash bowl 1, in position convenient to the operator, so that when it is desired to empty the wash bowl, the handle 17 is manipulated to rock the shaft 5 to operate the cam 7 to raise the plug 4 and when the water has drained out of the bowl, the handle 17 is manipulated to allow the plug 4 to close.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, as claimed.
I claim:
In a device for operating waste plugs, the combination with a bowl, a gravity plug in the outlet of the bowl, a rock shaft mounted below the bowl, a cam upon the inner end of the rock shaft for raising the plug, and a counter shaft mounted above the bowl and parallel with the rock shaft, of a crank arm on the rear end of the counter shaft, a crank arm on the rear end of the rock shaft, a link connecting the outer ends of the crank arms and stops extending from one of the crank arms to engage the link and limit the swing of the crank arm.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM R. HELSLEY.
