UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS B. HALL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
PHOTOGRAPHIG-PRIN '1' WASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed J'une 28, 1917. Serial No. 177,578.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs B. HALL, a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inoutward along the bottom of a retaining pan,-
and inward at the surface of the water contained therein. Other objects of the invention will be more fully set forth in the following specification.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a partial diagram and central vertical section through a container suitable for use with my device; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of a nozzle; Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the nozzle; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line H of Fig. 2.
The invention comprises an open-topped receptacle adapted to contain water, of a depth of several inches, preferably of circu lar form and with a flat bottom. In combination with such a retaining vessel 1 a nozzle is provided, adapted to seat on the bottom of the vessel at or near its central point, and having a plurality of lateral openings 6 near the bottom of the vessel. Through this nozzle water under pressure is injected, and flows outward from the nozzle along the bottom of the retaining vessel. This will produce a current running outward from the center of the pan, up along the side walls, and inward on the surface from the upper edge toward the center.
Photographic prints, which in course of preparation must be washed for a considerable time in fresh water, when placed in a pan provided with the nozzle herein described will be constantly in contact with the current of fresh water set up by the apparatus described, and since there is a current at the top flowing inwardly, the prints will tend to stay in the pan, following the current of water rather than to wash over the edge thereof, and so may be left in such a pan without the need of further attention for an indefinite time, with the certainty of being constantly washed by fresh water, and without danger of sticking together or being washed over the edge.
My invention comprises a conical shaped nozzle 2 having an enlarged flat bottom 3, a
raised bead or flange 4 about the smaller end, which terminates in a cylindrical portion 5. This flange and cylindrical portion are adapted to engage the end of a rubber hose, through which water is supplied to the nozzle. Near the base of the nozzle and just above the inner bottom wall, a series of horizontally alined perforations are provided, equally spaced about the nozzle.
The inside of the nozzle is an enlarged chamber as shown in Fig. 4:, and the base is somewhat thickened in order to make the nozzle more stable in position.
This form of nozzle is adapted to be used with any convenient container. By its use, the necessity for a special kind is obviated.
I claim 1. In apparatus for washing photographic prints, the combination with an open container, of a flat bottomed conical shaped nozzle, having an annular 'rib about its smaller end adapted to engage a hose and having a closed base at the larger end, with a plurality of lateral alined openings near the base.
2. Apparatus for washing photographic larger end forming a base adapted to seat on' a flat surface, and having a plurality of lateral openings uniformly spaced apart around and near the base.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LEWIS B. HALL.
