all 'whom it ma yicoiib ernfl V I Be it known that I, CLOYD MQC APMA a.
of Douglaston, Queens county, New York, have mvented certain new" and useful Improvements-in Burners forpGlosed oll-Testersfof which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved type of burner adapted .to be operated .either. with cil or gas in jfcomiection with closed oil testers of the type wherein a burner't'ip isarranged to be lowered into an openingin the cover of'a cup containing oil'to be tested simultaneously with the removal of the lid from said opening, the burner being raised from said positionin correspondence. and simultaneously with the closing ofthe lid.
More particularly my invention relates to an improvedburner of the character; de:
scribed as applied. to and used with an im';
proved form of closed oil tester Which constitutes the subject matter of a patent application filed by Charles J. Tagliabue, August 14, 1915, Serial No. 45,466.
In the patent application just referred to, a closed oil tester is shown which comprises an oil containing cup having a cover part of which is slidable and is engaged with an element attached to a rotatable as pipe provided with a burner tip whic enters the opening in the oil cup cover as the slide which normally closes said opening is withdrawn by the rotation of the pipe. The burner of this particular tester is adapted to burn gas only, and hence, While convenient as a laboratory instrument, is not adapted to conditions where gas is not obtainable. In practice it is often necessary to make flash tests in the oil fields or in refining works where there is no gas supply, but of course ample oil supply. In the prior'art understanding of the invention.
it has been usual to supply this need by providing both an oil burner and a gas burner and arranging the tester so that the one Y burner could readily be exchanged for the other. With my invention, now to be described, the same burner with practically no change may be used with either gas or oil at will and with equally good results.
My invention will be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, in connection with my im provement, so much of the Tagliabue invention above referred to as is necessary to an Of these BU NER FQR CLOSED OIL-TESTERS;-
Specification of Letters Patent. .Patejnted Aug. 13,1 1918. Y fa pueafion filed March 13, 19 16... SeriaI No. 33, 757.
drawings, Figurel is a central sectional elevation taken 'alongthe line 1 1 of Fig. 2;" Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and Fig, 3 is a central section along the line 33 of Fig. 2. g In the drawings the oilcup 1 is immersed in a water bath ,2 (theheatingl'means employed is not'shown). A cover 3is provided p' for. the oil cup and has a central opening 1 and peripheral ventjopeningsb and 6. slide 7" is provided with two openings corresponding to openings 1 and 5 and of such length that when moved sufliciently to therear (to the left, Fig. 3) the three openings 4-, 5 and 6 will be uncovered.
Thermometers 7 ,z8 are. disposed so as to givethe temperature of the oil. being tested and. of.-thewater respectively.
Erected upon the cover 3 is a pair of posts 9 which serve as bearings for. the burner 10. This burner comprises a box 11 having a removable plug cOVer 12, by means of which the box may be filled with oil, and a nozzle or burner tip 13 inserted in its front near the bottom.
Pipe sections 14: and 15 open into and are fixed to box 11 on each side and pass through supports 9, serving therefore as journals. Pipe 15 is extended beyond post 9 and provided with a knurled head 16 and with a spring 17 one end of which is attached to the pipe and the other to the adj acent post.
The spring 17 is so wound that the burner tip 13 is normally inclined upwardly as shown in Fig. 1 and (dotted) in Fig. 3.
The slide is provided with a pair of upwardly projecting pins 18 arranged to be engaged by a U-shaped member 19, which projects radially between them from pipe 15.
Pipe 14 terminates in a nipple 20 over which may be slipped the usual rubber tube 14 for the supply of gas and a cook 21 controls the opening through pipe 14:.
In making a test the knurled head 16 is rotated between thumb and finger, thus causing the box 11 to be turned, against the resistance of spring 17, so as to throw burner tip 13 downwardly and into the central opening 41, which opening the slide 7 simultaneously uncovers by reason of the pins 18 and member 19.
Preferably a small amount of. cotton or the like is placed in the box-11 and the burner tip 13 is provided with a suitable If the improved tester is to be usedWith oil the plug 12 of box 11' is removed, asuit:- able quantity of oilis placed in the box and the plug replaced; the burner tip may then be lighted. The rubber tube. 1%" should be Withdrawn from the nipple 20 and the cock 21 should be opened somewhat in order to.
supply a suitable amount. ofair to theinterior of the box, so as to tend to maintain the same air pressure Within and, Without the receptacle, thereby facilitating the supply of. oil to the Wick. z
The cotton ill have absorbed theoil and hence there Will be practically nov tendency for the oil to run out of the box by Way of pipe 14 or by Way of the burner tip When the latter is inclined downwardly.
ing a burner tip opening therefrom, said-1e ceptacle being pivotallysupported: above the cup so as to permit the burner tip to be lowered into the receptacle opening, cotton saturated With. oil Within said receptacle, a Wick in said burner tip, a pipe opening into saidv receptacle and adapted forthe flow of either gas or air, and a valve in said pipe.
2; An oil tester comprising an oil cup for the oil to be tested, said cup, having an opening in the top thereof, aclosed' receptacle having a burner tip opening therf'e' 'fromgsaid receptacle being piv'otally supported above thecup. so as to permit the burnertip 'to be lowered into the receptacle opening, cotton saturated vvith oil within saidjreceptack, a wick in said burner ti'p, one of the pivotal supports being hollow andfada'pte d tofthe fl of eithergas'or air, and a valvelfor opening or. closing "the'lpassa'ge through said pivotal support. r
