Patented Au 6, 1918,
JULIAN ALBERT CAMPBELL, LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
nvn-rno'rncron.
Speciflcati rs Patent. Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
Application filed July 11, 19 17. Serial No. 179,920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN ALBERT CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain useful Improvements in Eye-Pro-' tectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac: companying drawing.
The invention relates to eye protectors,
and more particularly to eye shields.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a shield of this character wherein all light will be excluded from the eyes when applied to the user, so as to protect the eyes while sleeping or when the eyes of said user are weak.-
Another object of the invention is the provision of a shield of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form, so that it will properly fit'the user, and will be held in place to protect the eyes to exclude light and to assure absolute darkness, without sacrificing or diminishing ventilation while the shield is worn.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a shield of this character wherein absorbent material can be held for the application of an antiseptic for the eyes when the shield is applied to the user.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a shield of this character which is extremely simple in construction, eflicient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With theseand other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shield constructed in accordance with the invention.
ignates the relatively narrow nose or bridge 4 piece, which is preferably made from celluloid having the'curvature 5 for the fitting of the same upon the nose of the user, and the wings 6 which are substantially flat and are provided with elongated slots 7, through which are trained the connecting tongues 8 of the eye shields 9, preferably of the shape shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, although the same may be made in any other shape desirable, and are of concave convex contour to form pockets 10, in which is received absorbent material 11, preferably cotton, although any other soft flufi'y substance may be used, and this absorbent material 11 is adapted to contain antiseptic substance for the treatment of the eyes of the user when the protector or shield is worn.
The shields proper 9, which serye as caps for the eyes, are preferably made from black velvet, although the same may be made from any'other suitable material, and have connected at their inner faces, near the outer edges thereof, elastic loops 12, which are adapted to encircle or embrace the ears of the user, so that the shields will be firmly fastened in place with the shields proper 9 or caps covering the eyes, and when in place, all light will be excluded, whether the shield or protector is used by day or night, thereby resting the eyes, and especially when the same are weak, while the antiseptic substance will treat the eyes for the strengthening thereof.
' From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the inbeen omitted.
What is claimed is A protector of the character describedcomprising .a relatively narrow nose bridge piece embodying an intermediate curved ortion and substantially flat wings pro- Jecting outwardly and in opposite directions from the terminals of the curved portion, the wings lying in the same plane with each other and being formed with elongated slits substantially flexible and opaque eye shields,
connecting tongues projectin from one end of each shield, and engageab e in the slot in the adjacent wing and attaching means engaged in the shields for retaining the shields in position to cover the eyes.
I In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JULIAN ALBERT CAMPBELL.
