' ADJ STABLE ENGINE-BED.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Bonnanmu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Argusville, in the county of Cass, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Engine-Beds' and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact descrip-' tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in supports and has particular reference to an adj ustable engine bed.
In the employment of stationary. internal combustion and steam engines, electric motors and other types of motive power used for driving other machinery by means of belts, it has been found that the belts often become so loose that it is necessary to adjust the tension thereof which ordinarily requires the stopping of the engine and either adjusting the same or cutting and sewing the belt. This operation not only involves unnecessary loss of time and labor but is unsatisfactory in other respects also.
It is therefore proposed, in the present in-. vention, to provide an engine bed of improved construction having a supporting frame which may be adjusted to vary the tension of the belt connected to the engine on said frame without stopping the operation of the engine and thereby effecting the saving of time and labor and also overcoming other diiiieulties incident to an adjustment in the ordinary manner.
The invention further contemplates the provision of an engine bed of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and eifective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical ex ressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accom-- panymg drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the engine bed constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. I
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.

,77 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the sides of the base.
A preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing where- 1n there is shown a stationary base 10 consisting of side members 11 connected, at intervals, by the cross braces 12. Secured to each of the side members 11 longitudinally and on both vertical sides thereof are the bars 13 whichhave their upper edges flush with the top of the side member for a major portion of their length, said bars being provided with oppositely disposed enlarged portions 14 having vertical slots 15 therein forming bearings for the trunnions 16 of the rollers 17, said rollers being partially recessed within the openings 18 formed in the top of the side member 11.. The adjacent ends of the bars 13 extend beyond one end of each of the side members 11 and have secured therebetween the fastening block 19 and abutting said bars and blocks is a transverse bar 20. I
An adjustable engine supporting frame 21 consisting of side and end members 22 turned in order to clamp the braces 26 to the side members 22 of the frame in order to secure said frame in its adjusted positions. The .side members 22 of the frame also have mounted thereon the transverse engine supporting beams 28 upon which any preferred form of engine may be mounted and it will be apparent that when the frame 21 is adjusted longitudinally of the base, a belt connected to the engine on said frame may be tightened or loosened as desired.
The means forv adjusting the frame 21 preferably comprises a longitudinally extending rod 29 having one end secured to one of the end members 23 of the supporting frame 21 by means of nuts 'or other fasteners 30. The other end of the rod '29 is screw threaded as indicated at 31 and ex-- tends through the other end member 23 of the frame which is engaged by nuts or other fasteners 32. The rod is further extended through the transverse bar 20 and mounted upon the rod on each side of said bar 20 is a hand wheel 33 which, when rotated in certain directions, is adapted to adjust the frame 21 longitudinally of the base 10..
Inpractice, should it be desired 'to adjust the frame 21 the hand wheels 27 are first loosened in order to unclamp the braces 25 and 26 from the Side members 22 of the adjustable frame. If it is desired to adjust the frame 21 toward the bar 20 the'hand wheel 23, between said bar and the adjacent.
end of the frame, is turned so as to be .adjusted away from said bar., The hand wheel 23 on the opposite side of the bar is then turned into engagement with the bar 20 and further turning of said Wheel will then drawthe rod 29 and consequently the frame 21 toward said bar 20. When adjusting the frame in the opposite direction,
An adjustment of both thebar 20 will also aid in retaining the frame in its adjusted position.
Whatis claimed is 1. An engine bed comprising .a base ineluding side members, longitudinal bars, se-
cured to the sides of said side members and.
provided with'spaced enlargements havingvertical slots therebetween, clamping bolts carried by said side members, an engine supporting frame mounted upon said side securing-said frame in its adjusted positions, and rollers having bearings in the vertical slots in the bars secured to said'side members of said base and upon which rollers said adjustable frame is supported.
2. -An engine bed comprising a base including side members and a transverse bar, clamping bolts carried by said side menibers, an engine supporting framemounted upon said side members and having slots through which said bolts extend whereby to permit an adjustment of said frame longitudinally of said side members, a rod secured to said frame and extending through said transverse bar, and hand wheels mounted upon said rod and adapted for alternative engagement with opposite sidesof said transverse bar whereby to adjust said frame in opposite directlons and also simultaneously engageable with said bar to'prevent relative movement between said base; and
frame. g
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
