To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER GROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and 15mproved Toy Engine, of which the followmg is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a toy characterized by the provision of a paddle wheel against which a fluid may be directed, with means for varying the direction of the 1mpinging fluid so as to change the direction of rotation of the wheel.
An object of the invention is to provlde a simple, inexpensive and attractive toy.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combmation and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts 1n both views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a toy embodying my invention, a portion of the toy being broken out to show the details of construction; and
Fig. 2 is a plan of the toy.
Referring to the drawings, 3 is a base on which is revolubly mounted a paddle wheel 4 which, preferably, forms part of a wheel 5 having suflicient mass to carry a crank 6 over the dead center. The crank is connected to a rod 7 which may be attached to any suitable mechanism and, as shown, it enters into a suitable opening of a cylindrical block 8 which is mounted to rock on a stand ard 9 rising from the base. The cylindrical block 8 is connected to the standard by a screw 10 passing freely through the standard to anchor in the block. By screwing a nut 11 on the screw 10 the tension of a spring 12 interposed between the standard and the nut may be varied and, in consequence, the friction of the block with the standard.
The base 3 is provided with an aperture 13 through which a fluid jet is allowed to pass so that the jet may act on the paddle wheel 4. As shown in dotted line in Fig. 1,
the boiler is nothing but an ordinary tin can in which a suitable aperture 14 has been formed so that the steam generated may be easily passed through the open ng 13 when the base is placed on the can so that the openings 13. and 14 register. The fluid jet coming from the can will react with the paddle coming directly above.
To change the direction of rotation of the paddle wheel, a baffle 15 is provided on the base in proximity of the opening 13. The baffle 15 is constrained to move with a shaft or rod 16 which has an arm 17 forming a handle by means of which the baflie 15 may be moved over the opening 13 and thereby cause the fluid jet to be deflected, as indicated in dotted lines and marked 18, thereby changing the direction of rotation of the paddle wheel 4.
In the toy illustrated, the cylindrical block 8 has the appearance of a cylinder, but the motive power is not applied within the cylinder but to the paddle wheels; so that in place of the cylinder any other mechanism may be substituted if so desired. The paddle wheel 4 has a hub 19 which has a groove 20 whereby a driving belt may be attached which may be engaged with a belt to drive other toys by the engine. The baflle 15 also serves as means for varying the speed of the paddle wheel, for by changing the angle of attack the speed may be varied.
I claim:
1. A toy engine comprising a base, a paddle wheel mounted to revolve on the base, said base having an aperture through which a fluid jet may be directed against the paddle wheel, a bafHe movably mounted on the base, and means for moving the baflie over the opening to change the direction of the jet, whereby the direction of rotation of the paddle wheel may be changed.
2. A toy engine comprising a base, a, paddle wheel mounted to revolve on the base, a crank constrained to revolve with the paddle wheel, a rod connected to the crank, means operatively connected to the rod to be actuated thereby, said basehaving an aperture through which a fluid jet may be directed against the paddle wheel, and a bafile mova'bly mounted on the base to move over the aperture and change the direction of the jet, whereby the direction of rotation of the wheel is" controlled.
3. A toy engine comprising a base, a paddle wheel mounted to revolve on the base, a crank revolu'ble with the paddle wheel, a standard on the base, a member mounted to oscillate on said standard, a rod slidably mounted in said member and connected to aperture and change the direction of the jet coming through the aperture, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. A toy engine comprising a base, a paddle Wheel mounted to revolve on the base said base having an aperture through which a: fluid jet may be projected in a substantially vertical direction against the paddle Wheel, and a baflie connected to the base to swing over the opening to deflect the jet from its vertical direction to a substantially horizontal direction whereby the direction of rotation of the wheel is changed.
