' Specification of Letters Patent.
Applieation filed February 20, 1917. Serial No. 149,809.
To all whomz'tmayiconcern;
Be it known that I, KARL KURT LEDIG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county ofEsseX and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Smoking- Pipe Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to tobacco,
of the pipe bowl on windy days, when travel-V ing in motor vehicles, and the like,and when stooping or jumping during work or sport;
thereby preventing injury by burning and by ashes to surrounding persons and objects. The invention further aims at, the provision of an attachment of this character for automatically tamping and holding in packed condition the tobacco placed in the ingof the same, andto keep burning after 'oncelighted. I I
A still further object of'the present invention is to'provide an attachment embodying the above characteristics, and which is so constructed and arranged as to protect the' tobacco, from .undue moisture 1n rainy weather when the ordinary pipe cannot be e i tly sed- The above, andvarious other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part describe and in part understood, from the following detailed descriptionof the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings where- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe having the attachment of this invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken through the pipe and the attachment applied thereto.
Fig. 4 is a top planview of the bowl end of the pipe, showing the attachment swung to one side to admit filling of the bowl.
Referring to this drawing, 10 designates an ordinary pipe bowl provided with a stem part 11 to which is fitted a mouthpiece 12.
The attachment comprises a disk1'3 adapt edto fit comfortably in the bowl 10 and providedwith a plurality of openings orperforations 14 extending through the disk.; .The disk 13 is carried'uponone end ofan arched support which is in the form of a rod bent substantially U-shaped having one arm 15' Patented Aug. 6, 191 8. 7

secured to the middle portion of the disk 13 to provide a plunger rod for moving the disk longitudinally in the pipe bowl 10.
The intermediate portion of the arched support extends substantially radially from thec'entral axis of the bowllO and is spaced from the open end of the bowl. This intermediate portion of the support forms a handlei6 adapted t'o be'grasped in the fingers for withdrawing and positioning the disk 13 with respect to the bowl 10.
The opposite or outer end of the arched support is'pivotally mounted in any suitable manner at the side of the bowl'10, In the present instance, the pipe is so formed as to provide atone side" of the-bowl a casing or cylinder 17,'the longitudinal axis'of which is substantially parallel to that of the bowl bowl, to insure the uniform and steady burn- 10. The Outer end of the support forms a the tobacco pivot stem 18which projects into the cylinder 17 and which is provided upon its free end with an enlarged head 19 adapted to lit for sliding movement in the cylinder 17.
The stem 18 carries an expanding spring 20 which has one end resting against the head 19, and whi'ch'has its opposite end detach ably'bearing against'a cap 21 which is de-' tachably secured to the outer end of the cyli'nder 17. The cap 21 may be threaded into the outer end of the cylinder 17 to form a support for the spring 20 and also provide a pivotal bearing for the stem 18. Thestem 18 is of greater length than the plunger 15 to retain the arched support in pivotal engagement with the casing or cylinder 17 when. the disk 13 is drawn upwardly out of the pipe bowl 10.
In using this attachment the tobacco is packed in the pipe bowl 10 in the usual manner after the device has been swung to one side, as shown in Fig. 4. The user now grasps the handle 16 and swings the support over the pipe. bowl 10 to register the disk 13 with the bore of the bowl. When the handle 16 is now released the spring 20 urges the arched support inwardly and forces the disk 13 against thetobacco inthe bowl to tamp thesame and hold it in packed position. As
the ,ipi'peis used in the wind, is handled roughly, or i'sflaid "on one side, the tobaccp Willbe retained in the boivl under all of t eseconditions 'as the spring Constantly urges the disk lsfiiito the bowl against'the l ,VIv tobacco andthe ashes formed there n.
To gain access to the bowl, it is onlyneces- ,sary to drawerhandle 16 upwardly again st the tension of the springQO until 'thed'isk 13 clears the upper edge of the bowl. The arched support may now be sWiingl'a-terally to have the disk, 13 out of register with the boivl, Thehandle I6 may-of course be re- Cl at which time the; spri g 520 downwardly and liolds the arched support the disk againstone side of the botvl.
'Itis evident that theattachment may "be -mfade entirely separate from the, pipe and adapted to be applied to pipes of 'difl'erefit construction, "and also that other ein'odifications and changes may be made infthe details of construction of the above-specifically described embodiment of this invention Without departing from the spirit thereof such changes and in'odifications being restricted only-by the scope ofthe followingclaiins.
I claim 1 The combination Witha pipe having a bowl, of avp'erforated disk adapted to fit in the open end of the bowl, anarched support pivotally inountedat one side oft-he bowl and extending into the open end there- Cbfpi's'iif this pa fentmay be obtained '1'02' ir ewceii'ts eaeh by-afldressing the 3commieieiaeiremnant 7 ofand having connection with said disk, and a spring supported by the bowl and engag; 'ing said arched support for normally urging the same inwardly to feed said disk against tobacco i-pa'eked in the bowl.
