Under these conditions the outer side face of the last exerted substantial lateral pressure against the outer (convex) side face of the shoe upper as it was pulled from the shoe, while, owing to the flat and undercut surface of the inner side face of the last, only slight lateral pressure was eX- erted against the inner side face of the shoe. i The present invention effects a more equal distribution of pressure against the sides of the 'shoe upper and prevents excessive lateral strain by providing means operative to inoline the shoe transversely at a determinate angle to its normal plane, pressing the inner side face o f the shoe Vagainst the inner side face of the last so that heelward movement of the last with a component substantially perpendicular to the normal plane of the shoe bottom will cause the last to recede from the outer side face of the shoe upper in the direction of the inner side face of the shoe and with lateral pressure' against the inner side of the shoe upper. The inclination is preferably suchthat the lateral presvrsureagainst the opposite side faces of the shoe upper, as the last is moved from the shoe during the second stage of separation,

The angle at which vthe shoe is inclined will be reversed for right and left shoes since the inner side faces of rights and lefts are at opposite sides. Accordingly, a further and related feature of my invention consists in combination with shoe and last holding means and mechanism for effecting relative separating movement, of means operative relatively to incline the shoe and last transversely of the shoe and last and at maintained angles of inclination reversed in alternation during successive cycles of the` machine. c l
A related feature of the invention consists in means to indicate to the machine operatorthe conditioning of the machine forl and left inclining action adapts the machine to this practice. 1f the shoes run in rights or lefts, the operator has only to treadle the machine for an empty cycle, between successive right or left shoes, as the case may be. This does not mean a loss of time for the empty cycle can be made to occur while disposing of one pulled last and shoe and` reaching for. the next shoe and last to be operated upon. The parts and operation of the Benjamin last pulling machine shown herein need only be described briefly since the specific construction forms no part of the present invention. Briefly, the machine comprises a hollow standard in which is journaled a shaft 4, driven through a pulley 6 which receives power from a belt or other driving medium, the pulley being loose on the shaft and a one cycle clutch mechanism being employed to couple the pulley to the shaft and to rotate the shaft through a half revolution forming, in the present instance, a com plete work cycle'and automatically to unclutch the pulley and arrest the further movement of the shaft at the end of said cycle. As the cam wheel approaches the end of a half revolution (and the end of the machine cycle), the lower end of bell crank lever 64 will drop down in the second low part 62 in the peripheral edge of the cam, permitting the springs to retract the plunger 72 and the gripping blocks to releasethe shoe.
1n accordance with the present invention the cam wheel 36 is provided substantially centrally of its periphery and laterally offset from the path of contact of the end bell crank 64 (see Fig. 2) with a peripheral cam groove 218 into which extend the rolls 217 and 209 on the extension 216 and rocking lever 208 respectively. This peripheral cam groove is plotted in Fig. 6 and the rocking, inclining,
and stationary or dwell sections of each of the two cycles are indicated by appropriate marginal notations.
The rolls of the indicator yoke and rocking lever are relatively `positioned so that at the end of one cycle,'the indicator roll 217 will rest in a section of the cam groovevlaterally offset from the central line c-c of the cam groove to swing the yoke finger 212 to indicate that the neXt cycle will incline the lshoe gripping head for right or left shoes, as the case may be; while the rocking lever roll 209 will be positioned at the begin- 'ning of a straight or dwell section 220 of the cam groove. lThis dwell is of such length that the rotation of the c am` wheel 36 at the beginning of a machine cycle will cause the gripping blocks to engage and hold the shoe before the roll v209 enters into the reversely curved rocking sections 222.
These rocking sections 222 of the cam groove are arranged to impart a complete rocking reciprocation to the gripping head 200 while thelast is being pulled substantially to clear the bottom of its heel from the edge of the shoe counter. 1n operating upon a left shoe, the [rocking section 222 'will be figured to stop its rocking movement with the shoe gripping head inclined transversely ofthe last with the shoe pressed against the' inside face of the last which is being pulled downwardly in a line having one component substantially perpendicular to the initial plane of the shoe bottom, the laterally offset straight portion 224 of the groove which follows the rocking bends 222 maintaining this inclination during the remainder of the last pulling operation. This action is seen in theupper half of the plotted cam lof Fig. 6.
The cycle for a right shoe is seen on th lower half of the cam plot in Fig. 6, the rocking movement of the gripping head 200 terminating with the head and shoe reversely inclined to press the inner side face of the right shoe against the inner side face of the downwardly moving last. A dotted line c-c extending centrally of the plotted cam groove, in conjunction with the line of the groove indicates clearly the reverse swerving of the cam groove for right and left shoes in successive machine cycles.
The base of the indicator vplate 214 eX- tends through the yoke 210 and has an upstanding flange 215 in a substantially parallel plane with the yoke and linger and to the rear of the linger. This flange bears suitable indicia such as uR or Right,7 and 11, or Left, as suggested, the R or Right7 being at the left side of the flange as viewed byl the operator since the roll 217 in indicating position for ctright shoes rests in a portion :of the cam groove 21S offset to the right of the central line of the cam groove, as viewed by the operator, thereby causing the finger 212 to swine' to the left. Obviously, the indication mar-lr and direction ofswing are reversed for left shoes.
The operation of the machine may be described in brief, as follows: The last and shoe are mounted on thecarrier 1414 and properly positioned between the grippers and the treadle 22v depressed. r1`he cam wheel 36 begins to rotate, its initial movementcausing bell crank lever 64' to move the gripping members to engage andhold. the shoe. During this period the rocking lever roll 209 is riding in the straight or dwell portion-220 of the cam groove 218 `so that the gripping head 200 remains stationary. At the end of this period? the wiper cams begin to operate against theroll on bar 172 to move the carrier 14:4 and last downwardlyk through the' described connections'.
