Specification o1' Letters Patent.
'17 o all l1li/wm t may concern Be it known that We, HARRY L. BECK, JOHN WEIBLE, and p ERRY J. HOULAHEN, citi-` zens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh; Coraopolis, and Millvale, respectively, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fuses; and
we do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to a fuse `for electric circuits.
The invention relates more particularly to that type of fuse in which the shell or casing is provided with a movable shutter by the removal of whichv the fuse is exposed and can be readily removed and anew one insorted; the object of our invention, however,
being to provide a fuse of this type inwhich the parts are so arranged that a careless person cannot close up the shell or casing with-. out all the parts being assembled in their propel` position-such as omitting'to put the shutterA in position thereby leaving the fuse exposed. A further object of our invention is to `simplify the construction and reduce the number of separate parts, whereby the operation of removing and inserting a new fuse isV greatly simplified and the time required is reduced to a minimum.
Referring tothe accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal view of our improved fuse; Fig. 2 is a longitudinalview with the shutter removed; Fig. 3 is a view of the shutter removed; Fig. et is Aaside View' of the detached cap g Fig. 5 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 6 is a sectional view Vof same; F ig. 7 is an end view of the cap at tached to the shutter; Fig, 8 is a cross-section. on the line 8 8, Fig. 1; Fig. 9 is a cross-sectipn on the line 9--9, Fig. I1; andv vFig. 10 1s a View of the fuse-w1re removed.
The numeral 2 designates a. suitable shell or casing formed of fiber or other suitable material, said casinghaving the opening 3,
which is normally closed by the shutter 4. This shutter is provided with the tongue 5 and the shoulder 6 whereby said shutter has a longitudinally sliding connection withzthe shell 2. Connected to one end of the shutter 4 is the cap 7, said cap having the slotted opening 8 and thevents 9. Secured within the shell 2 by the screws' 10 are the terminals 11. `These terminals rest 4Wire corresponds to the shape of the stud on lThe 'swivel-plate has the .through which the terminalll passes.

against a. shoulder 12 ou the inside of the shell and when the shutter 4 is inserted, the tongues 5 of said shutters engage the terminals, and intliisway the terminals are held securely between the shoulders 12 and the tongues 5, as clearly indicated in Fig. 8.
The fuse-wire 13 is connected by the screws 14 to the terminals 11, 11, washers 15 heingemploye'd to practically cover the ends of the fuse-wire and hold the same securely imposition. The fuse-wireis provided with an opening 16, which engages the similarlyshaped stud 17 on one of the terminals 11. The shape of this openin 16 and of the stud 17 may vary for di erent sized fusewires so that a person in applying a fusewir@ can only apply the proper size as unless the shape of the opening in the fusethe terminals, the 4fuse-wire cannot be in` sorted into position. This insures the proper size of fuse-wire always being employed and prevents a lcarelessperson fromA putting in a fuse-wire whichwill not give the proper results. 4 'l A removable cap 18 is connected to the shell 2 by the bayonet-joint connection 19. A swivelfplate 20. is secured to the cap 18. said4 plate having the tongues 21 secured` thereto which. overlap the flange 22 of the cap. In this manner, the swivel-plate vis held within the cap, but said cap is free to rotate independently of Vsaid swivel-plate. slotted opening 23 By the' cap can be the above lconstruction,
turned to disconnect said ferrule from the shell 2, while the swivel-plate 20 is held from turning by the terminal which passes through the slotted opening 23 therein.
When the fuse-wire has burned out and it is desired to replace it with a newl one, the cap 18 is rst removed by releasing the bayonet-joint whereupon the shutter 4 may be slid out. said shutter carrying with it'the 100 lcap 7. When the shutter has been removed,
the screws 14 are unscrewed and the burned fusewire removed. A new fuse-Wire 1s substituted and 1n order to insert said fusewire, the opening 16 therein must be of 10b proper shape and size to lit over the stud 17. l. This insures against the insertion .of the wrong size of fuse-wire, and different shaped openings and studs'will be provided for different sized fuse-wires.
