Be it known that I, CARL POLSON, a subject ofthe King of Swec'len,residing at Vermillion, in the county of Marshall and State of Kansas, have invented new anduseful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in end gates for wagons andrelates particularly to in'i n'ovements in end gates which may be used as scoop boards when desired.

I n carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide an' end gate for wagons which iney be readily and quickly applied to the wagon box and removed therefrom, and which may be swung downwnrdly to aninclined position and held in such pos tion to form a scoop board to facilitate the'removal"ofthe contents of the wagon box.

It also my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of Wagon end gates and to provide an end gaite wherein the component parts will be so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility ofde rhngcinent to a niinimumand which maybe readily securely, and quickly fastened in position.

\Vith the above and otherobjocts'in View the invention consists'in the construction, cbiiibinartlon and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The wagon box 1 may be of any suitable construction. Secured to the inner faces of the s ide boards of the box, atthe rear end thereof, are a pair of vertical guide strips 2 which are spaced :1 art to form vertical uide ways between t em.

The end gate comprises a main section 3, a detachable upper section 3 and a supplemental section 3". The main section 3 is designed together with the section 3 to close the rear end of the box and is of a length to fit nicely between the side ortions of the wagon box. Pivoted to the inner surface of the end gate section 3 adjacent the ends thereof are vertical angle iron securing strips 4 which normally project at rightangles to the end gate and are provided on their outer sides with vertical ribs 5 arranged toengage in the Ways between the strips 2 to hold said gate section 3 in p0sition at the rear end of the Wagon box. Extending across the outer "side of the gateseetion 3* are rods "8 Whichh'ave slots 9 neartheir outer ends forenga ementby hooks 16 which aresecured ont didesof the wagon box and project from the rear end thereof. These rods pass through slots in the levers 7 and are provided with stop at nds 11 which engage opposite sides of said levers so that the rods are loosely pivotally connected to the levers. The inner ends of the rods are arranged in overlapping relation and have their inner ends pivotal y conneetcd as at 12, 13 to an operating bar 14 which is arranged between them. When said rods are moved in one direction under the action of the bar 14 the levers will be actuated to disengage the ribs from the guide ways and move the outer ends of the rods outwardly so that they may be readily disengaged from the hooks 10 and hence release said section 3. On the other hand when the bar 14 is swung in the. opposite direction the rods are actuated to swing the levers and to turn the hinged strips 4 and engage the ribs 5 of said strips in the spaces between the guide strips and at the same time the outer ends of the rods securely engage the books 10 and are fastened, thus securing the end gate section 3 in place. A

, spring 15 has its ends attached to the rods 8 and serves by its tension to normally draw said rods toward each other to keep them in close engagement with the hooks 10. One of the rods 8 also has a keeper 16 for engagement by the free end of the bar 14, to lock the latter when in fastened position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.

The end gate section 3 is provided on its inner side near its ends with angle iron strips 4 which are secured thereto by hinge plates (5, said angle iron strips being hingedly connected to said plates as shown in detail in Fig. 6. The plates extend across the said gate section 3* and in eli'ect form cleats to strengthen the same, the strips 4 being hingedly connected to the section 3 by hinge plates 6 which are similar to the hinge plates 6. Said hinge plates (Proxtend a slight distance below the lower edge of the section 3 the upper ends of sections (3 terminating a corresponding distance short of the upper edge of the section 3 so that said hinge plates 6 pass across the joint between said gate sections 3, 3', as shown in Fig. 3 and hence bear against said section 3. The angle iron stri 4 has a rib 5" to engage between the strlps 2, to secure the end gate section 3 in closed position. The lower portions of the strips 4 lie in the angles between the sides of the strips 4 when the end gate is in closed position as is indicated in F igsj3, 4 and 5,. Each strip 4* isprovided w th a lever. 11 the outer end of w'hichis turned outwardly as at 18, each lever havin a slot comprising a horizontal arm 19 an a .vertical arm 20. Saidlevers work in slots 2l ,with which the end gate section 3 is provided and extend rearwardly from said section. Each strip 4 is provided near its lower end with a curved open slot 21 and the rib 5 of each of said strips is provided with a horizontally arranged inwardly and rearwardly extending sogmeir tal arm 22 which has a correspondingly shaped slot. 23. lloadcd. studs 24, which in practice may be screws, are secured to the rear strips 2 and project inwardly therefrom and operate in the slots 21 when the end gate is lowered and arranged to form a scoop board, as shown in Fig. 4, the section 3 of the end gate being provided in its ends with recesses or notches 25 to receive and clear said headed studs when the end gate is closed, and as shown indetail in Fig. 7.

Rods 25 which are similar to the rods 8 pass slidably through the slots of the levers l7 and are provided at their outer ends with slots it; for engagement by hooks 27 which are secured to the sides of the wagon box and project rearn'ardly therefrom. The said rods 2.) haustop tuds 28 which en-- gage opposite sides of the levers so that said rods are slidably connected to the lovers. A lever bar 29 which is similar to the lever bar .14 is arranged between the over-lapping ends of the rods 25 and permanently pivotally connected to one of them as at 30, and detaclnibly connected to the other by a pin fill which also serves a stop pin.

Hence the rods may be moved in either direction by said lever bar to cause the levers 17 to turn the angle strips 4 as may be required to engage their ribs 5 between. the strips 2, to lock the section 3 or to disengage said ribs from between said strips, to release said seetioi'i, as will be understood.

The upper and lower edges of the sections it, 3 are inclined as shown in Figs. 3 and 1- and the lower edge of the section 3" is also inclined, to bear and fit closely on the upper edge of the section 3*.

To support the end gate in inclined position and hold the same for use as a scoop board, and as shown in Fig. 4, the pairs of rods 25 are disconnected from each other and are arranged with their slotted ends engaged with the hooks 27 and their opposite ends passed through the slots of the lovers 17, so thattheir stop studs 28 pass through the vertical arms 20 of the slots 19 and their pins 31, 33 bear against the under sides of the levers 17. Thus said rods and said levers and the strips 4 support the end gate in such position, the lower edge of the section 3 bearing on the bottom I, of the wagon, and being supported thereby, as ho n.-

The supplementalgate section 3 is pro vided on its front side, near the ends, with side walls 34 which are arranged in line with. the strips 4 and 4" of the end gate sections ,3, 3 respectively and are cut away at ravages their front side's below the section' 3" as at 35to clear said Strips 4, 4 The said side walls 33 extend to the bottom of the wagon body and are provided on the rear side of their downward extensions with hooks 36 which engage in the slots 23 of the ar1ns22 of the strips 4 so that said side walls 3% are thereby connected to said strips 4* while permitting the latter to be freely operated. The lower ends of said side walls extend forwardly into the rear end of the wagon box a slight distance when the end gate is arranged as a scoop board and by hearing against the side portions of the wagon box prevent grain or the like from being spilled at the ends of the gate. The slots 28 enable the strips P to be turned freely and in coir nection with the hooks 36 enable the section 3 to be readily detached when this is desired.

\Vhile I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of HIV invention and within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In colnbimition with a wagon body having vertical strips on the inner sides of the side portions thereof, an end gate having pivotally mounted strips provided with means to engage the first-named strips to secure the end gate in closed position, handles attached to the strips of the end gate, extending through openings in the end gate and rearwardly and outwardly therefrom, said handles being provided with slots, and rods connected to the sides of the wagon body. extending through and movable in said slots and provided with means to engage and hold the handles in gate locking position when the rods are arranged transversely of the gate, said rods coacting with said handles to support the gate when the latter is in inclined scoop board forming position.

2. In combination with a wagon body having vertical strips on the inner side of the side portions thereof, an end gate having pivotally mounted strips provided with means to engage the first-named strips to secure the end gate in closed position, handles attached to the strips of the end gate, extending through openings in the end gate and rearwardly and outwardly therefrom, said handles being provided with slots, and rods connected to the sides of the wagon body, extending through and movable in said slots and provided with means to engage and hold the handles in gate locking position when the rods are arranged transversely of the gate, said rods coacting with Sam lamest weep-port the gatewhen' the latter is in inclined scoop b'o'ard ,iorming position, and means to draw and lock said rods together. j

4. In combination with a wagon body having vertical strips on the inner sides of its side portions, an end gate havinr pivotally mounted strips on its inner si e provided with means to engage the first-named strips and secure the end gate in closed position, a supplemental end gate section for arrangement on the end gate and having side walls arranged in line with strips of the end gate, and means to detachably secure the side walls of said supplemental end gate section to the said strips of the end gate, and permit pivotal movement of said strips.

5. An end gate comprising separable sections each provided at the ends with pivotally mounted angle strips adapted to engage in the sides of a wagon body, the upper section having hinge plates for the said strips thereof, said hinge plates extending below said section and to bear against the lower section.

6. An end gate comprising separable sections each provided at the ends with pivotally mounted angle strips adapted to engage in the sides of a wagon body, the upper section having hinge plates for the said strips thereof, said hinge plates extending below said section and to bear against the lower section, the strips of said section extending below said hinge plates.

7. An end gate comprising separable sections each provided at the ends with pivotally mounted angle strips adapted to engage in the sides of a wagon body, the upper section having hinge plates for the said strips thereof, said hinge plates extending below said section and to bear against the lower section, the strips of said section extending below said hinge plates, and being arranged in the angles of the pivoted strips of the lower section when said strips are in engaged position.

8. In combination with a wagon body having side walls, an end gate comprising separable sections each provided at the ends with pivotally mounted angle strips adapted to engage in the sides of the wagon body, the

upper section having hinge plates for the said strips thereof, said hinge plates extending below said upper section and to bear against said lower section, the strips of said upper. section extending below said hinge plates and being arranged in the angles of the pivoted strips of the lower section when said strips are in engaged position and being also provided with curved open slots, and headed studs projecting from the side walls 10 of the Wagon body and arranged to engage in said slots.
