EMILE DRAPEAU, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
ETEE-EXTINGUISHEE.
Specitlcation of Letters `Patent.
Patented July 3o, 191s.
Application led November 19, 1917. Serial No. 202,752.
'1 o all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EMILE DRAPEAU, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the :following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to fire exi tinguishers of the type in which a re extinguishing liquid contained within a tank or reservoir is expelled therefrom by-means of compressed air contained within the receptacle and under the control of the operator.
An object of the present invention is to improve the general construction of ireextinguishers of this character so as to increase their eiciency and reduce the cost of manufacture of the same, thereby rendering the extinguishers commercially desirable.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of partsl as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawin has been shown a simple and preferred orm of the.
invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to whichrecourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the eilciency of the same. c
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the extinguisher embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same; i
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section; and,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section ofthe handle. j
Referring now more particularly to the accompanylng drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar re erence characters throughout the several views- The reservoir or tank 1 of the re extinfrom a valve stem 19.
guisher is made preferably cylindrical having a top 2 which is provided with an internally threaded projection 3. This tank is to contain a suitable extinguishing fluid and also compressed air or similar agents for expelling the extinguishing fluid lfrom the tank. A support 4 is provided having a threaded projection 5 which is to be seated within the threaded projection 3 and connected to this threaded projection 5 is a tube 6 which extends down into the tank having its lower end open and terminating adjacent the top of the tank. The support 4 is provided with. a lpair of oppositely extending arms 7 which provide handles. The interior of the support 4 is provided with a channelway 8 having a valve seat arranged therein' lwhich is adapted to be closed by means of the valve 9. This valve 9 isgcarried by the valve stem 10 which extends up through the support 4 and `detachaloly connected to the upper end of the valve stem 10 is a cap or handle 11. This valve is normally retained closed by means of the coil spring 12 as better shown in Fig. 3, but by pushing down upon the'knob 11 the valve will be opened thereby permitting the extinguishingliquid contained Within the tank 1 to pass through the tube 6 into the channelway 8, then through the opening 13 into a discharge pipe 14. A suitable hose 15 having a nozzle in one end thereof` is connected tothe pipe 14. Extending down through the valve stem 10 and the valve 9 is a channelway 16 and the lower end of thisv channelway is in commu nication with the interior of the tank 1. A threaded sleeve 17 is arrangedwithin the upper end of the valve stem 10 and the interiorof this threaded sleeve is in communication with the channelway 16. A spring actuated valve 18 is alsov arranged within this sleeve 17 and which normally closes the upper end of the channelway 16. This valve 18 has rojecting therey removing the cap 11 and connecting an ordinary bicycle i pump to the interior threaded portion 20 of the Valve stem 10 air may be forced past the valve 18 through the channelway 16 and then into the tank 1 and this compressed air will rest within the upper end of the tank In the operation of the extinguisher the tank 1 is partly filled with extinguishing liquid and then compressed air is forced within the same. When it is desired to use the extinguisher, the operator graspsthe handles 7 with one hand and by pressing down on the cap 11 with the palm of the hand the valve 9 will be opened. When the valve 9 is open the compressed air will force the extinguishing liquid contained Within the tank out through the pipe `14C and the operator with his other hand may control the v,direction of flow of the liquid by guiding the nozzle carried by the flexible tube 15.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A ire extinguisher of the character described comprising a casing, a support detachably connected to said casing, said support having a channelway formed therein; i
within said .valve stem substantially as and for the purpose specied. Y
2. In a lire extinguisher of the character described the combination with a casing, of a support detachably connected to said casing, a tube connected to said support and eX- tending down within said casing, said support having a channelway therein communieating with the upper end of said support, an 'outlet pipe communicating with said channelway, a valve arranged within said channelvvay to close the communication between said tube and said outlet pipe, a valve stem carried by said valve and extending up through said support, a detachable cap secured to the upper end of said valve stem, a pair of laterally extending arms formed with said lsupport and said valve stem having a valve controlled passageway therein adapted to communicate with the interior of the casing substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EMILE DRAPEAU.
