METAL H'EAD FOR BARRELS 0R KEGS.
Application filed March 3, 1916.
To all ii /tom it may camera.-
Be it known that I, JAMns 'W. BRAINARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at .littsburgh, A llegrheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Imirove nents in Metal Heads for Barrels or kegs. of which the following is a r'ull, clear. and exact drseription, referent-e being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view showing one form of 1 improved sheet metal head.
Fig. i. is a section on the line ll -ll of Fig. l, and showing the head applied to a barrel or keg and Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar, respectively. to Figs. 1 and 55. but showing a niodiiiration, the section of Fig. i. being on the line lV-----.|V of Fig. 3.
My invention is an improvement upon the barrel or keg shown in my Patent No. 914,757, ol' March 9, 1909. The object of the present invention to provide a sheet metal head of greutl increased strength. whieh can be readily manufartnred from sheet metal by the use of dies. The inven' tion. has particular relation to the nirthod in which the head is reinforced o as to greatly stiller. and strengthen it at the portions thereof which are most likely to give way in service.
Referring lirst t that form ofv my invention shown in Fws. l. and 2 the numeral designates the body of thchead, $5 the-n1 wardly extending. flange which tits Within barrel or lceg 4, nd
the head portion of the i3 the downwardly extending flange fitting; around the outer side of the head portion, the wlfole being formed oysuitable die operations from a single piece of sheet metal.
The body portion 2 is preferably dished inwardl v, somewhat as shown, and is formed with a staror spider-shaped reinf0rcement. This reinforcement is formed by pressing), inwardly the eentnal portion of the (3. with a plurality of slaved radiating depressed ribs 7 which pre erably extend to points adjac nt to the .base of the flange 3.
Experience has shown that the central portion of these heads are most apt to give way in service. This I effectively prevent by the provision of the central 'reinforee 6. while the radiatil'ir ribs 7 st'iii'en and rein force the entire body.
The form ofmy invention shown in Figs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1918.
Serial No. 82.853.
3 and 4 is similar to that shown in Figs. 1. and 2, except that instead of pressing the metal inwardly to form the central reinforce 6 and the radiating ribs, the operation is reversed and the metal is pressed out-- wardly, forming these reinforces on the outer surface of the body. Similar referent-e eharucters to those used in Figs. 1. and 2 are applied to corresponding parts in Figs. 3 and l. with the sullix a.
In these figures I have also shown the lower edge of the flange 5 as formed with :1 rolled bead 8, thus doing away with a raw edge at this point and preventing craeking or splitting of the head when driving it over the chime of the barrel. This bead liiay also be used on the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2. ll ivill be noted that in both forms of my invention the body portion is continuously di hed across its diameter; and that the rentral reinforce and the radial reinforcing ribs are pressed out of the general plane of curvature of the dishing. also preferably taper the radiating ribs so that the 1 will be deepest and widert at the point where they join the central reinforce, with a gradual decrease in both depth and width toward their outer ends.
M invention provides a greatly improved metr'l head for barrels or kegs width can he maiuifnctured at a relatively small cost by simple die forming operations. and which is strbngg and durable in service. The need for end hooks for the barrel or k g is done away with, by my combined head and hoop.
1 claim:
1. As a new article of manufaeture. a barrel or keg, head formed from a sheet metal blank and having a to portion dished inwardly across substantially its full diameter, the central portion of the bodv having the metal thereof pressed out of the general plane of curvature, said head having an annular flange at itsonter edge, there being an annular recess of tapered cross section in the flange formed by bending the material upon itself and arranged to receive the chime of the barrel, and the metal being also shaped to form a pier lity of hollow tapered radiating ribs the depressions of which open at their inner ends into the depression of the fleutral reiuforrv, said depressions tapering in width and depth from the rcntral portion toward the edge of the head. substantially. as d'escri bed I 2. As a new article of manufacture, a barre] or keg head formed from a sheet metal blank and havin a top portion dished inwurdly across sulistnntially its full diame ter, the central portion of the body having the metal thereof pressed out of the general plane of curvature, said head having an annuler flange at its outer edge, there being an annular recess of tapered cross section in the flange formed by bending the material u on itself and arranged to receive the chime oi the barrel, and the metal being so shaped to form a lurality of hollow tapered rudiating ribs tlie depressions of which open at their inner ends into the depression of the central reinforce, said ClGPICSSlOHs tapering in width and depth from the central portion toward the edge of the head and said depres sions merging into the general plane of cul'\' ature of the dished portion adjacent to the edge.
3. A metallic head for staved barrels, kegs and the like, said head being formed froin a sheet met-ii hlnnk dished inwardly over the full diameter of the barrel and having an outwardly flared flange rising t'roni the ed 0 of the dished portion and adapted 'to it closely within the ehinie oi the harroh said flange being bent horizontally its outer edge and thenre haekwardly to form a ehiine hoop portion, said flange and hoop portion forming a wedging seat for the chime and said flange ulSo forming an ahutment to resist outward llexure of the head, substantially as described.
