Description

J. ZUKOWSK'I. WIRE CUTTING ATTACHMENT. APrfucATmu man Ams, 191s.
1,273,980. Patented July 30,1913' wventoz A 0 John Zukowskl annua) UNITED sTATiisrATENT a i JOHN zUKoWsKr, or DETnoInMIcHIGAN.
' WIRE-CUTTING armeni/.renin To allwhomz't may concern: A
Be it known that I, JOHN ZUKoi'vSK-na citizen of Poland, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented' certain new and useful Improvements in lrVire Cutting Attachments,l of" which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in implements of offense and particularly to bayonets as carried at the endv of a rifle,
which may be permanently engaged there- Y with so that the same may be advanced, and when engaged with wires or like entanglements, to sever the same in a rapid and etlicient manner.
A further obj ect is to provide such attach- Y ments in form which may be readilyapplied to bayonets of the ordinary type of vconstruction aiid which .may be operated by drawing acord, thereby compressing springs which do the actual cutting.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a gun having a bayonet thereon indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the bayonet, showing the attachment applied thereto.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the same, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
In thedrawings the numeral 10, represents the barrel of a conventional type of rifle, provided with the butt 11, and usual firing means 12.
The usual formof bayonet 14 is rigidly attached by clips 15 and 16 to the muzzle of the rifle, in an operative position, the maiiner of attachment being that of the ordinary tv e. Y
l iFixed upon one of the edges, preferably the upper, of the bayonet 14, is a holder 18,
in which is removably engaged a cutter' blade.22, while immediately adjacent, and
rearward thereof, is a second holder 23 Specification of Letters Patent. Jilly nppiicaionniedapriis,191s;' seriaino'jzzai'zv.. *i* i of the bayonet* shank 28,5 adjacent Vto the clip 16 lare the inner ends of' a pluralityof i arcuately bent Aflat springs?"30, lwhile their front ends are attached to an eye 31, engaged with the carrierlor holder 23I in such ymanner that the latter element is normally projected slidable knife 24, together with the holder 23, is retracted, leaving a considerable'opening between the cutter blade 24L and the rear beveled edge of the fixed cutter 22, into [which a wire or other article to be severed may be readily entered. Y As a inatterV of fact, theradvancement of the bayonet 14 into a fenceor otherentanglement causes the wire to drop into this opening formedbetween the cutters, so that upon suddenly releasing the cord 35, the springs 30 move violentlyoutward, causingthe cutters to come into intimate contact and sever whatever may be contained therebetween,
and it is to ybe Vunderstood that the actual cutting action is due to the function ofthe springs 30, the same propelling the cutter blade 24 forward in a particularly easy and eliicient manner.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: Y Y
1. In a wire cutting attachment for bayonets, the combination with a fixed blade secured tothe bayoneta slidable blade coperativetherewith, means for guiding said slidable blade.l means normally projecting said sliding blade forward, and meansy for reti-acting said slidable blade.
2. In a wire cutting attachment, the combination with a cutteri blade rigidly engaged.
with the bayonet, a sliding blade coperative therewith, means for vguiding said sliding blade, a plurality of springs adapted to project saidv sliding blade forward, and means for retracting said sliding blade so as to present an opening between said cutterblades for the entrance of the article to be cut.
3. In a wireeutter` attachment for bay nets, the Combination with a beveled cutter holder rigidly engaged with a bayonet, a slide movable in alinement with said fixed holder, cut-ter blades removably engaged With said slide and holder respectively, a plurality of springsv secured at one end to the 'extremity of said bayonet and at the other to said slide, and means engaged with Said slide whereby it may be brought rearwardly, said means extending to a point convenient of access.
4.r In a Wire cutting attachment, the com- Coiiies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner bination with a fixed cutter, a sliding cutter coperative therewith, means for causing said Sliding cutter to move in alinement With said iixed cutter, springs adapted to propel Said sliding Cutter forward, and a cord attached to said sliding cutter, said cord extending rearward to a point convenient of access and adapted to'retract said sliding cutter, opposing the action of said springs.
In testimony whereof I :have affixed my signature.
JOHN ZUKOVVSKI.
