r w m v 1 m l E m ares PATENT amen.
EMIL G. RICHTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES B. RICHTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GAS-STOVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL Gr. RICHTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements 1 n gas stoves and has for its object the provision of means automatically controlled by a utensil on said stove for supplying the gas thereof, whereby the placing of the utensil on the stove automatically turns on the gas supply and the removal of the utensil automatically discontinues the gas supply, thus avoiding the necessity for lightin the stove or turning on the gas upon placing of the utensil thereon, and in turning oil the gas for the removal of the utensil.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a gas stove burner, embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same,
Fig. 3, a detail view of a controlling valve employed in the construction,
Fig. 41-, a view taken at rlght angles to Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5, an enlarged section taken on hne 5 5 of Fig. i.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises an ordinary annular gas burner 6 provided with the usual mixing tube 7 supplied with gas through the usual supply pipe S, controlled by a valve 9 and supplied with from the main supply pipe 10. A hollow nipple 11 is connected with the gas supply pipe 8 to project upwardly therefuom and a valve stem 12 is arranged to reciprocate vertically through the supply pipe 8 in the nipple 11, said valve stem being provlded with a transverse perforation 13 adapted to be elevated in registration with the bore 8 of the supply pipe 8. A compression spring 14 is arranged in nipple 11 and a minute gas supply passage 15 is provlded in the pipe 8 and nipple 11 for constantly supplying a limited amount of gas to said Specification of Letters Patent.

nipple. The upper end of the nipple 11 is closed by a centrally perforated cap 16 and a pilot light tube 17 is extended centrally through the cap 16 and bent to place its discharge end immediately over the burner 6, as shown. The tube 17 is provided with a head or flange 18 resting within the cap 16, thus ellecting a swiveled joint between said tube and nipple and permitting of ready adjustment of said tube to suit various burners. The lower end of the valve stem 12 is connected by a lever 19 with the lower end of a plunger 20 having a head 21 normally resting slightly above the level of the ordinary supporting spider 22 of the burner 6.
By this arrangement, it will be observed that upon placing a utensil over the burner (i, the plunger 20 will be depressed to bring the perforation 13 in registration with the bore 8 of the supply pipe 8, thus automatically supplying a full supply of gas to the burner (3. Upon removal of the utensil, the supply of gas is automatically discontinued. The pilot light tube 17 constantly maintains a minute flame over the burner 6 so as to ignite the gas when supplied thereto. By this arrangement the necessity for the turning on and off of the gas is dispensed with, thus greatly adding to the convenience of use and to economy in consumption of the gas. The specific form and arrangement of the parts is a simple and ellicient one for the purpose, and one which may be readily attached to an ordinary gas burner.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into elfeet, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a gas stove burner, of a gas supply pipe leading thereto; a hollow nipple connected with said gas supply pipe; a centrally perforated cap closing the end of said nipple; a pilot light tube extending centrally through said cap and leading to said burner, said pilot light tube'being provided with a head swiveled Within said cap; a valve for said supply pipe; a spring in said nipple normally holding said valve closed; a depressible operating member associated With said burner and operated by a utensil thereon; and an operative connection between said depressible member and said valve, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a gas stove burner of a gas supply pipe leading thereto; a hollow nipple connected with said gas supply pipe and projecting upwardly therefrom; a centrally perforated cap on the top of said nipple; a pilot light tube extending Vcentrally through said cap and leading to 7 said burner,. said pilot light tube being provided with a head swiveled within said 7 cap; a perforated valve stem traversing said supply pipe; a spring in said nipple nor mally depressing said valve stem but permitting of elevation thereof to bring the perforation therein in registration with the passage through said supply pipe; a depressible operating member associated with said burner and operable by a utensil thereon; and an operative connection between said member and said valve stem substantially as described.-
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
