' 10 improvements in light shields and more particularly has reference to a shield especially adapted for Iuse in connection with electric light bulbs.
It is the primary aim and object of the present invention to provide novel means on a light shield with which an'electric lamp bulb and its socket will cooperate whereby to maintain the shield in adjusted positions with respect thereto, thus reflecting the light rays in various directions, the device incidentally being of such a character that it may be readily adapted by motorlsts for dimming the headlights on a motor vehicle.
As a more specific object, the present in- Y vention contemplates the provision of a novel bearing surface on the attaching means and the body of the shield for increasing the eiiciency ofthe engagementof a lampbulb withthe shield.
Among the Vother aims and objects of the present invention may be recited thel provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple,'the cost of production low and the eciency high.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention vvwill be more readily apparent from the fol- 40 lowing description. taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim, forming a part of thisI speci'fil cation..
The preferred embodiment of the present I invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation'of my invention 1n operative relation with a lamp bulb and its socket, parts bein shown in sections. Referring now, more particularlyt0 the 60 accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a lamp socket l, ofthe conventional form and removably mounted therein is a stem 2 of a lamp bulb 3, which may be and preferably is of a globular form. In the present instance the shield conl sists of a body 5, preferably of a semi-globular configuration the outer end having a recess 6 therein for surrounding the Iusual pointed end of the bulb. An extension I is integral with and' continues from the inner 75` edge of the body in a plane at right angles to the plane of the straight edges 8 of the body while an opening 9 is provided in the. extension and the body as indicated in Fig.

The side edges of the extension adjacent the body are curved as indicated by the'numeral l() and the side portions 11 adjacent the body and between ,the opening andthe curved edges 10, areo also curved to correspond to the curvature of the body, the curvature of these portions 11 causing .the curved edges 10 to be arranged toward the inner end of the bulb in order that the' said curved edges* 10 may form a bearing surY face for the bulb subsequent to the projecting of the stemy 2 through the opening 9. Incidentally, this opening permits of the `bulb holding the extension 'against the socket y 1, since the extreme inner end. of the. bulb engages the extension while the 95l curved ed es 10 arealso engaged by por-` tions of t e bulb adjacent the inner end. The inner surface of the bodymay be coated with a silvered coating to provide a reflecting surface.
From the foregoing descri tion it will be readily apparent that the b y 5-may be ad justed about the bulb preparatory to the j final turning of the bulb to clamp the body. It is also thought that the advantages of the invention when in useA will be readily apparent. For instance, the shield may be readily appllied on a bulb in a headlight for dimmm t e headlight.
