LIGHT-SHIELD.
Specification of Lettere Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application filed January 8, 1917. Serial No. 141,238.
' 10 improvements in light shields and more particularly has reference to a shield especially adapted for Iuse in connection with electric light bulbs.
It is the primary aim and object of the present invention to provide novel means on a light shield with which an'electric lamp bulb and its socket will cooperate whereby to maintain the shield in adjusted positions with respect thereto, thus reflecting the light rays in various directions, the device incidentally being of such a character that it may be readily adapted by motorlsts for dimming the headlights on a motor vehicle.
As a more specific object, the present in- Y vention contemplates the provision of a novel bearing surface on the attaching means and the body of the shield for increasing the eiiciency ofthe engagementof a lampbulb withthe shield.
Among the Vother aims and objects of the present invention may be recited thel provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple,'the cost of production low and the eciency high.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention vvwill be more readily apparent from the fol- 40 lowing description. taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim, forming a part of thisI speci'fil cation..
The preferred embodiment of the present I invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation'of my invention 1n operative relation with a lamp bulb and its socket, parts bein shown in sections. Fig..2 isa top plan of ilg. 1 partly taken in longitudinal section on me 2--2 of Fig. 1, n the direction which the arrows point, an
taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1 in the direction in which the'arrows point.
-. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the shield Similar characters of reference are employed 1n all of the above described views,'to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularlyt0 the 60 accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a lamp socket l, ofthe conventional form and removably mounted therein is a stem 2 of a lamp bulb 3, which may be and preferably is of a globular form. Secured in an adjusted position and partly surroundin the bulb .is my improved reflecting sh1eld designated in its entirety by the numeral 4:.
In the present instance the shield conl sists of a body 5, preferably of a semi-globular configuration the outer end having a recess 6 therein for surrounding the Iusual pointed end of the bulb. An extension I is integral with and' continues from the inner 75` edge of the body in a plane at right angles to the plane of the straight edges 8 of the body while an opening 9 is provided in the. extension and the body as indicated in Fig.
3. The side edges of the extension adjacent the body are curved as indicated by the'numeral l() and the side portions 11 adjacent the body and between ,the opening andthe curved edges 10, areo also curved to correspond to the curvature of the body, the curvature of these portions 11 causing .the curved edges 10 to be arranged toward the inner end of the bulb in order that the' said curved edges* 10 may form a bearing surY face for the bulb subsequent to the projecting of the stemy 2 through the opening 9. Incidentally, this opening permits of the `bulb holding the extension 'against the socket y 1, since the extreme inner end. of the. bulb engages the extension while the 95l curved ed es 10 arealso engaged by por-` tions of t e bulb adjacent the inner end. The inner surface of the bodymay be coated with a silvered coating to provide a reflecting surface.
From the foregoing descri tion it will be readily apparent that the b y 5-may be ad justed about the bulb preparatory to the j final turning of the bulb to clamp the body. It is also thought that the advantages of the invention when in useA will be readily apparent. For instance, the shield may be readily appllied on a bulb in a headlight for dimmm t e headlight.
It w' 1 be understood that the Vabove description-and accompanying drawings com prehend only the general and preferred enig4 bodiment of my invention and that various minor vchanges in detail of construction,
proportion and arrangement 'of the parte may bev made within thescope of the appended.- claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention. f
Having thus fully described my nveni tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is In 'a device as described, in combination, an electric lightbulb having a pointed teat, a threaded shank connected thereto,'a.s1eeve in which said shank is threaded, a shield consisting substantially of a semi-spherical names? .metallic member adapted to overle one hal-f said lug provided with an opening through.
which sald 'shank projects, said 'sleevebearingfrictionally againstsaid fiat 111g, the
forward portion of said shield terminating in a tapering portion the extremity of which 4is curved back -to form a protecting lip spaced in back of the mentioned teat. of said bulb. l v
iin testimony whereof Iaiix my signature.
