I. M. JACOBS & w. CRAMER. ADJUSTABLE HOOD FOR MOTOR VEHICLES.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 26. I917.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISIDOR M. JACOBS, OF KANSAS CITY, AND WILLIAM CRAMER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T0 TRUCK, TRACTOR AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
ADJUSTABLE HOOD FOR MOTOR-VEHICLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Iswon M. JACOBS and WILLIAM CRAMER, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, and St. Louis, State of Missouri, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hoods for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, while it may be of general utility, is especially designed in aid of the salvaged constructions contemplated by the application for patent Serial Number 163,652, filed by one of the joint inventors herein named, and has for its object the ready utilization of salvaged motor vehicle parts, and provides an extensible or telescoping hood for the engine, which hood, on account of its capacity for telescoping or extension, can be readily adjusted to any length of engine.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur,
Figure 1 is a sectional View on the line 1-1 in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view in detail on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, looking in the directions of the arrows.
The radiator l is supported in the chassis 2 in the usual manner and so also is the dash-board 3.
To the chassis 2 or a sill 3 thereabove are hinged at 4 the side members 5 of the engine hood, which are fastened by any suitable catches 6 to the lid member 7 or hood proper.
The hood proper 7 can be removed entirely when desired and the side members 5 let down so as to afford full and free access to' each and every part of the engine.
So arranged as to telescope with the lid 7 and side members 5 are the end side members 8 and the end lid member 9, which are fitted to the dash 3 and attached by the plate 10 having the flanges 11 and the upturned lip 12 to the sills 3, or if desired directly to the chassis 2.
Rivets 13 attach lid 7 to flange 14 on the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23', 1918.
Application filed October 26, 1917. Serial No. 198,646.
radiator, which flange 14L is overlapped also by the side members 5 as well as by the lid 7 and the member 9 is attached by screws 15 to the dash 3.
It will be understood that in using this telescoping hood the radiator 1 is likely to be placed at the extereme front end of the chassis 2, but that the dash-board 3 can be placed at any suitable location relative to the radiator.
Having thus described this invention, we hereby reserve the benefit of all changes in form, arrangement, order, or use of parts, as it is evident that many minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of this invention, or the scope of the following claims.
We claim:
1. A longitudinally adjustable hood for motor vehicles, and means for rigidly securing said hood in anydesired longitudinally adjusted position.
2. A longitudinally adjustable hood for motor vehicles comprising two parts, one adapted to overlap the other, and means for rigidly securing said parts together in adjusted positions.
3. A longitudinally adjustable hood for motor vehicles comprising two main parts, the end of one main part adapted to overlap the other main part, each of said main parts being composed of separable parts, and means for connecting said main parts together in adjusted relation to each other.
4. longitudinally adjustable hood for motor vehicles formed or two parts, one adapted to overlap the other, each of the said two parts being composed of three parts, one of the said three parts being a lidmember and the other two side members.
5. A longitudinally adjustable hood for motor vehicles formed of two parts, one adaptedto overlap the other, each: of: the said two parts being" composed of; three parts, one of the saidithreeparts being a lid member and the other: two: side members, and means for: fastening the said lid parts in fi-xedrelati'omtoreach other, v
6. A longitud nally adjustable hood for motor vehicles formed-1 of two parts, one adapted to overlap the other, each of the said two parts being composed ofi three parts-,one of the said": three p arts being lid member and the other two side members,- and. adjustablemeans for fastening the said lid member parts in fixed relation to each other:
7 A longitudinally adjustable: hood for motor vehicles formed; of: two parts, one ad-aptedi to overlap. the other, each. of the said two parts being composed of three parts, one of: the said three parts-being; a lid member and the other two side members, means for fastening: the said lid parts in fixed relation to each other, and. means for attaching the'said side; members to the lid members.
8. A longitudinallv' adjustable hood: for motor vehicles formed: of' two parts, one adapted to overlap the: other, each oi the said twoparts being. composed of. three parts, one of; thesaid threeparts-bein alid member and the other two side members, means for fastening the said lidparts infixed: relation to I each: other, and means for attaching both sets" Ofi sidemembers to the chassis. V
9. A longitudinally adjustable hood for 1 motor vehicles formed of twoparts, one
adapted to'overl'ap the other, each-- of the said two parts being composed? of three parts, one of the said three parts-being ailid member and'the: other t-wo' side members,
" means for fastening the saidrlid parts in- V Copie'aot this patent mayx, b'e obtained for fixed? relation: to each other, and means for attaching the saidside members to tliechassis, the said means for one set of side members consisting of a sill-embracing flanged plate having a lip and meansconnecting-the saidlip to its respective"side'member.
