'llhis invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines and more particularly to paper feeding and guiding means especially adaptable for' use with stenographic typewriting machines,- one object of our present invention being to provide simple and eicient mechanism which will' operate accurately to feed the paper a dennite distance for line spacing upon the manipulation of a key or plurality of keys'.

The roller l2, forminga part of the paper feed mechanism as well as the Vplaten roller for the type, 'is driven step-bystep when the heys are operated, by means ofratchet devices. 'llvhese vcomprise a ratchet wheel 29 lllflll itt (preferably having Ene teeth) which may be secured to onefend of the roller by means of a collar or mit 30 'screwed on the heb ratchet wheel to-said head. A pawl carrier 31 is mounted loosely on the collar or nut 30 5 and the latter is provided with an annular ,flange 32 which lies against one face of said pawl carrier. 'A pawl 33 is pivotally attached to the carrier 31 and pressed into engagement with the ratchet wheel by means of a spring 34. A disk or ring 35 is mounted on the roller head 15 so as to be movable independently of both the roller and the ratchet Wheel and between said disk and ratchet wheel, a spring washer 35a may be located. This disk kor ring is provided with an annular flange' 36 which encircles the ratchet wheel 29, and the flange 36 is provided With a notch 37 through which the pawl 33 projects to engage the ratchet as shown at 38, so that when the pawlbegins its retrograde movement itwill ride on said beveled surface. 38 and thus be disengaged from the ratchet wheel, thus preventing noise-'which would otherwise occur" should the pawl be permitted to drag baekwardly of the teeth of the ratchet wheel. The flange 36 of the disk or ring 35 is provided also with a slot 39, and a pin 40 on carrier 31 is adapted to move from one end to the other of said lslot 39.- During such initial return movement of the carrier, the pawl f. will ride upon the beveled surface 38 and thus be moved out of engagement with the ratchet wheel.- During the remainderof the return movement of the carrier and its pawl, the pin 40 engaging one end of the slot 39,
will cause the flanged vdisk or ring to Amove with said pawl and its carrier and thus the pawl will be held out of engagement with the ratchet wheel during .the complete retrograde throw of the samef f 'lhe ratchet mechanism is controlled by the operation of the key levers through the medium of a universal bar 41 andconnecvtions between the same and the pawl cary rier. The universal bar 41 is disposed transverselyin the' lower portion of the framework somewhatin advance of the pivotal mountingsj of the key levers so as to be actuated by the latter. The bar 41 is provided at its ends with 'arms which are pivotally connected with the frame 2 in line with the ivotal mountings of the key levers and said aris spring sustained, all as fully shown and described in our application Se-v rial No."125,224led October 12,1916.
The arm 42 at one end of the universal bar (the lpivotal mounting of said armbeing indicated at43 Fig. `4) engages the bifurcated arm of a bell-,crank lever 44, pivotally mounted on the frame at 45. The'upwardly projecting arm 46 of the'bell-crank is connected by means'of an' L-shaped link 47, with i the pawl carrier 31; 'A spring .48 is-conwheel. One wall of the notch 37 is beveled nected with the arm 46 of the bell-crank to insure the proper return of the parts.
, From the construction' and arrangement of parts above described, it is apparent that .when a key lever (or any number of them) is depressed, motion will be imparted through the medium of the universal bar, bell crank 44 and 'link 47 to the pawl carrier,l thus causing the operation of the ratchet devices to turn the roller 12 for feeding the paper and that when the key lever is released, the parts will be returned to their normal positions.
To insure the proper and positive feeding ofthe aper when the roller -12 is operated as a ove described, auxiliary feed rollers 49 are provided and pressed toward said roller 12 sothat the paper will be grasped by the coperating rollers and moved the proper distance without danger of slipping. v
The rollers 49 are mounted on a shaft 50 and the latter is mounted at its respective ends in slightly elongated holes 51 near the forward ends of links 52. These links are provided at their rear ends with collars or hubs 53 secured to a shaft 54 mounted at its ends in the sides of the supplemental framell. A bar 55 is hung from the shaft 50 and may be conveniently made of sheet metal with stiiening anges 56 -at its edges and perforated lugs 57 at its ends loosely mounted on the shaft 50. Pins 58 secured to the bar 55, depend therefrom and pass loosely through holes in the bottom member .of the frame 11. Springs 59 encircle these pins and `bear at their respective ends against the bottom of frame 11 and the bar 55, so as to force the latter upwardly pressing the auxiliary feed rollers toward the roller 12.l j The rear ends of the links 52 are provided with, inwardly projecting lugs 60 which serve as guides for the edges of the paper strip.
A paper guide apron 61 is-disposed under the roller 12 and is provided with ears 62 mounted loosely on the shaft 50. The forward portion of the apron is curved upwardly ap roximately concentric Ato the roller 12 and its rear portion is bentto form `a curved lip 63 which guides the pa `er over the shaft 54. The apron 61 is provi ed with vslots 64 for the accommodation of the feed rollers 49 and said apron is maintained yieldinglyin position by means of a 'sprin 65. This uspring loosely encircles the sha t 50 and its respective endsf engage said apron and the bar 55..

Theguide 66 is provided with lugs or ears 69 projecting-over the roller 12 and terasse serve as mountings for small feed and guide rollers 70 which bear upon the paper passing over said roller. rllhese rollers are normally pressed downwardly on the roller 12 by the action of a spring 71 and the guide member 66 is provided with an arm 72 whereby the same may be manually operated to raise theA roller 70 when the paper strip is first threaded through the feeding mechanism.

As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the paper strip 5 passes over the cuide apron 6l and between the roller l2 and the rollers a9; then ap: proximately -half way around the roller 12 and past the printing position then under the rollers 70; then under the guide 66, and finally to the extended section la of the tray;
Various changes might be made in the details of construction of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence We do not wish to restrict ourselves to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. lin a typewriting machine, the combination with feeding means, of a ratchet wheel connected therewith, an oscillatory pawl carrier, a spring-actuated pawl mounted on said carrier, a disk mounted to move independently of said ratchet wheel, said disk having a flange provided with a slot for the passage-of. the pawl, and one end of said slot being beveled, and means foroausing said disk to move with the pawl carrier during a portion of the movement of the latter..
2. lin a typewriting machine, the combination with feeding ineans, of a ratchet wheel connected therewith, an -oscillatory pawl carrier, a spring-actuated pawl mounted on said carrier, a disk movable independently of said ratchet wheel and having a Harige projecting over the periphery of the ratchet wheel, said flange provided with a slot for the passage of the pawl and one wall of said slot being'beveled, and a pinand-slot connection between the pawl car rier and said flanged disk v 3. lin a typewriting machine, the combination with feeding means, a ratchet wheel connected therewith, key lever mechanism and a universal bar having a rearwardly projecting arm at one end, of an oscillatory pawl carrier, a pawl mounted thereon to 'engage the ratchet wheel, a bell-crank having one of its arms loosely connected with the arm 0f the universal bar, and a link pivotally connected with an arm of said bellcrank and with said pawl carrier.

5. ln a typewriting machine, the combination with a frame, a lplaten roller mounted in said frame, and means for operating said platen roller to feed a paper strip,w of linksconnected with said frame and'provided with guide lugs, a shaft mounted in said links, feed rollers on said shaft and cooperative with the platen roller, and springoperated means tending to press' said shaft andv rollers upwardly toward the platen roller.
