tain newand useful Improvements in Fuel- Controlling Devices for Motor-Vehicles, of which "the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fuel controlled devices formotorvehicles and more particularly to valved devices of this character adapted to be interposedatsome point in the fuel supply pipe for controlling the supply of liquid fuel to the motor.
The main object of the invention is to provide simple and eil'licientwalved-means so constructed as to form a continuous passage from the gas tank to the motor of a combustion engine only when properly set in a predetermined position, knowledge of which is available only to the rightful operator.
Another object is to provide a valve of the type setforth with permutation means "whereby the position of the valve may be varied at will, and whereby a person having knowledge of the combination may easilymanipulate the valves to cause them to assume the proper position without the use of tools.
Another object is to so construct a valve of the class described as to render it capabio of being cheaply manufactured, readily installed and durable and efficient in operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, whichwill appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope ofwhat is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illust 'ated in Figs. 1 to 3, the device constituting this inventionoomprises a supporting casingl closed at its ends and open at'its sides and whichis bolted to a suitable support, here shown inthe form ofa car floor F, said casing de pending from the lower face thereof and having mounted thereina plurality of valves 2. These valves 2 are preferably ar ranged in longitudinal alinementand any desired number oflthenrmay be employed,
here shown, all of which areexactly alike and hence one only will be-described in detaih Each of thesevalves 2 comprises a cylindrical. casing 3 Whichirests on the bottom 4 of the supporting casing 1 and may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. These cylindrical valve casings 3 are closed at their upper ends by removable caps 5 which have central openings 6 therein for the passage therethrough of stems 8 carried. by the valve members 7. These; members 7 may be solid as shown in F ig. 3 but need not necessarily be so formed, andeach hasa stemw8 leading through the pas-- sage or opening 6-in the cap 5 and extending upward through the floor F of the car, the upper ends of said. stems projecting some distance above the floor F, although they need not necessarily be so disposed, the only object ilrhaving them above-the. floor is to: conveniently position them for actuation by the driver.

the inlet at the other end of the series leading from the gas tank and is preferably equipped with a cock12 so that gas may be out 01f entirely from the controlling device when desired for repairs or other purposes. The cylinders of the series are connected with each other by a plurality of inclined pipes or conduits 13, each pipe being in registration at its front end with the discharge or outlet 11 of one valve casing 3 and at its rear end with the inlet of the adjacent valve casing. It is thus'seen that when the valves are positioned so as to bring their bores 9 into register with the inlets and outlets of the casings 8,: said bores will also communicate with the conduits 13 and with the pipe P, thus forming a zigzag passage from the pipe portion which connects with the cylinder at the front of the series and that portion which connects with the cylinder at therear thereof. A wearvplate 14 is mounted on the upper face of the floor F through which'the stems 8 of the valves are designed to pass and supported above this plate on uprights 15 rising from the ends-of said wear plate is a transparent cover 16 .screwed or otherwise secured to said supports, it being here shown pivotally mounted at one end thereon and havinga lock 17 at its opposite end for holding it in operative position. This transparent coverplate 16 is mounted, in a suit ableframe 18 and is here shown rectangular in form, being comparatively narrow in width for a purpose presently to be described.
Carried by eachof the valve stems on its upper end is a'dial 19 which while here shown rectangular in form may be of any suitable or desired configuration and as shown is attached to "the valve stem by a screw 20. These dials 19 perform the double function of turning members for the valve bodies 7 and to contain peripheral characters 21, any desired number of which may be used and which are designed to form a safeguard against an unauthorized placing of the valve bores 9 in alinement with the easing inlets and outlets, since the operator of the valves can only be assured that all of the valve bodies 7 are in the necessary alinement in which fuel is permitted to flow through the bores 9 and conduits 13 by the position assumed by thev dials 19 with respect to the transparent cover plates 16, the characters on the dials having been so placed that their position relative to this cover plate will be coincident with and in alinement with the valve bores 9 with the casing inlets and outlets as may be readily determined at the time of installation of the device.
It will thus be seen that when the driver 65. leaves his vehicle he need only rotate two or more of the permutation dials 19, to a greater or less extent in order to shut off the supply of fuel from the motor and also to jumble up the number to which the whole series of valves must be set in order to restore the supply of fuel. Under these conditions no person other than the driver can reopen the control device except by very protracted trials.
It is in the power of the driver to change 7 the combination number for opening the valves as many times as he likes in the course of a day so that all possibility of unauthorized persons learning the combination and operating the valves is obviated.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 to 6 the construction is very similar to that shown in the above described figures except that the conduits 13 instead of being in the form of obliquely disposed pipes as in Figs. 1 to 3 are shown step-shaped, the lower member 22 of which communicates with the outlet opening of one valve casing 3 while the upper portion 23 thereof communicates with the inlet opening of the adjacent valve casing and which is disposed in a plane above its outlet as is shown clearly in Fig. 5.
The portion of the pipe P which connects the control device with the gas tank is here shown provided with an ordinary coupling 2% instead of having the cock 12 as shown in the other figures. In view of the similarity between these two forms of the invention it is not deemed'necessary to further describe this form in detail.
It will thus be seen that with either form of the control device the driver may quickly cut off the supply of gas to the carbureter and thereby insure the safety of his vehicle from the use of unauthorized persons.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I 115 now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are with in the scope of the claimed invention.
