To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN C. ANDER- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel Valves and Strainers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a combined valve and strainer adapted primarily for use between the supply tanks and carbureters of automobile engines, although it will be understood that it is applicable wherever occasion may demand.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device so constructed as to prevent the valve from be ing opened by unauthorized persons.
With this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which:

In specifically describing the structure shown in the drawings above briefly described, similar characters will be employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end, the numeral 1 designates a suitable casing having formed therein a tapered valve chamber 2 and a cylindrical straining chamber 3, the two being closed at their upper ends by a removable cover 4 equipped with a stufiing box 5 disposed centrally above the chamber 2. An inlet port 6 passes through an external nipple 7 on the casing 1 and delivers into the chamber 2, while leading from the lower end of said chamber into the straining chamber 3 is an additional port 8. A third port 9 leads from the upper end of chamber 3 through an outlet nipple 10, a" suitable tably mounted in chamber 2 in contact with the wall. of the latter, said plug being normally forced downwardly to retain it in such contact by a coiled spring let. The upper end of plug 13 has formed therein a port 15 adapted for registration with the port 6 while the lower end of this plug is formed with a port 16 for alinement with port 8. A vertically disposed operating stem 17 passes rotatably through the stuffing box 5 and through an opening 18 in the closed upper end of the plug 13, the lower end of said stein being normally disposed adjacent the bottom of the chamber 2 and having a laterally projecting finger 19. This finger is adapted to come in contact with a stop 20 within the plug 13 at the upper end of the latter to permit turning of said plug to either close or open the valve. Before this can be done, however, it is necessary to raise the stem 17 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that depicted in ig. at. ihis method of operation, being unknown to all but the legitimate users of the device, will render it practically impossibio for the machine to be used by others.
The upper end or" stem 17 is equipped with a graduated disk 21 which normally rests upon a bracket 22 which may be secured to the dash of an automobile or to any other suitable support, said bracket having an indicator 22 for cooperation with the scale 23 on disk 21. The latter is equipped with a suitable operating knob 24: and by first pulling upwardly on said knob to place the finger 19 at a suitable elevation for engagement with the stop 20, the stem 17 may be rotated to the proper extent for opening the valve. The disk 21 will be preferably secured adjustably on the stem 17 in any pre ferred manner in order that the combination necessary to open the valve may be changed whenever expedient. In closing the valve, it is also necessary to first raise the stem 17, since when the latter is in its lowered position any amount or turning will not move the plug 13.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the con struction, manner of operation and advan tages will be readily understood, but in conclusion I will state that although the present application is in accordance with the device as now manufactured, numerous changes may be made within the scope of the inven tion as claimed Without sacrificing the main advantages thereof.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described co1nprising a one-piece casing having therein a pair of horizontally spaced chambers closed at their upper ends by a removable cover, one of said chambers being tapered for the reception 01' a valve plug, an inlet into the upper end of this chamber, an outlet from the lower end thereof into the other chamber, an outlet from the upper end of said last named chamber, a horizontal strainer between the outlet of this chamber and that of the tapered chamber, a valve plug rotatably mounted in the last named chamber and having port means for registration with the inlet and outlet thereof, to permit the passage of liquid through the device, and means for. turning said plug.
2. A device of the class described comprising-a one-piece casing having therein a pair of horizontally spaced chambers closed at their upper ends by a removable cover, one of said chambers being tapered for the reception of a valve plug, an inlet into the upper end of this chamber, an outlet from the lower end thereof into the other chamher, an outlet from the upper end of said last named chamber, a horizontal strainer between the outlet ofthis chamber and that of the tapered chamber, a valve plug rotatably mounted in the last named chamber and having a pair of ports for registration with the inlet and outlet thereof to permit the passage of liquid through the device, an internal stop at the upper end of the plug, an operating stem passingslidably. through the aforesaid cover and through the upper end of the plug into the interior of the latter, and a finger extending laterally from the lower end of-said stem, said finger being adapted to be brought into contact with the stop when the stem is raised to permit rotation of said stem to set the plug. 7

A device of the class described comprising a valve casing having an inlet and an outlet, a hollow valve plug mounted ro- 60 tat-ably in said casing and having port means for establishing communication be tween said inlet and outlet, an internal stop in one end of said plug, an operating stem sliding through the casing and through this 65 end of the plug into the interior of the latter, and a laterally projecting finger on the inner end of said stem, said finger being adapted to be brought intocontact with the stop when the operating stem is pulled. outwardly, whereby rotation of said stem will set the valve.
