To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, JULIAN SMIGIEL, a citizen of Poland, residing at Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connectiout, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldering-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in soldering tools and particularly to those of a self heating type.
The principal object is to provide a tool of the class described combined with an internal heater, fed by gasolene or like liquid fuel.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the heater element may be rapidly and conveniently removed or inserted.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclos1.u'e,and in which Figure 1 is a partial side elevational and vertical sectional view of a soldering tool made in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The invention comprises a hollow cylindrical body 10, formed with a point 11, which may be of the usual chisel or diamond shape as preferred.
Adjoining the tubular body 10, is an en larged globular extension 12, and extending therefrom is the upper portion 14: of the implement, contracted at the neck 15, and formed with a boss 16, extending laterally out from one side, the central portion of the neck 15, having a plain bored circular opening 18, suited to receive a burner or torch 20, having a rounded imperforate end 21, while the main portion has formed through it a plurality of perforations 22.
Vapor is supplied to the burner through the hollow arm 24, connected by a pipe 25, with a reservoir 26, adapted to contain gasolene or other inflammable liquid, the same being entered through an opening at its up per end, normally covered by the cap 27 Formed in the upper portion of the burner 20, is a valve seat (not shown) controlled by the screw-threaded stem 28, of a needle valve provided with a knurled head 29, by which it may be operated, the point of the valve controlling the opening 30 formed through the burner,
In the extension 16 of the body, is formed a transverse slot or recess 32 in which is slidably received a block 33, provided with screw-threads 3 1 on its inner surface, adapt ed to engage with the screw-threads 35, upon the upper portion of the burner 20.
This block is operable by means of a stem 37, having at its outer end a pin 88, operable within a longitudinal slot 39, formed in the end of a lever 10. This lever is pivoted on a pin 1-1, set in a bracket 42, formed integrally with the outer end of the body 1 1, the lower end of the lever terminating in an operative pad ll, by means of which the block 33 may be withdrawn so as to clear the threads 35, allowing the burner to be removed.
A coiled tension spring 45 is attached at one end within a recess formed in the extension 16, and at the other end to the lever 10, the same normally maintaining the block in engagement with the screw-threads of the burner, the arrangement being such that as soon as liquid fuel is communicated from the reservoir 26, to the burner 20 and the same ignited, the flame issuing from the perforations 22, fills the globular body 20 and communicates heat to the point 11, escape of smoke being provided for by the perforations l7.
In operation, the reservoir 26, having been filled with gasolene or the like, and the needle-valve properly adjusted to allow a certain amount to pass downward through the opening 30, the torch or burner permits the gases to pass through, which upon be ing ignited are entered within the head by depressing the lever 1 1, releasing the block 33, which permits the ready engagement of the burner within the body and which afterward may be rotated therein and adjusted due to the screw-thread connections.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a soldering tool, the combination with a hollow head, an applicator point formed therewith, and means for the en trance of a burner, of a perforate burner tube engageable within said head, a liquid fuel holding reservoir connected with said burner, means for the control of fuel to said burner, a lever by which said burner may be engaged or released with respect to said hollow body, and means for the escape of the products of combustion from said body.
