SELF-HEATING soLnERme-moN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 13, 1914.
Application audiences, 1914. 'Seria1No.846,846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SHINSAKU SUZUKI, a c1t1zen of the Empire ofJapan,
residing at Seattle, in the'county of Kingv and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in-Self-Heating Soldering-Irons, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has relation to soldering irons or coppersgenerally used by tinsmiths and has for its objectto provide a device of this character which may be heated by vapor.
of liquid fuel with the result thatthe. device may be used continuously without requiring the intermittent heating of the soldering iron or copper as ordinarily constructed.
The invention inits specific adaptation is designed to utilize liquid fuel such as gasolene, which in the operation of the device is converted into vapor, such vapor being mixed with air and the resultant mixture consumed, and the heat resulting from combustion being utilized for maintaining the device at the required temperature.
The invention consists of a soldering device having a hollow head, a burner, a generator for converting the liquid fuel into.
vapor, a tank for holding a quantity of fuel, and means for regulating th supply of such fuel to the burner.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings hereto attached: Figure 1 is a side view of a soldering device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the head. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the delivery end of the tank and the receiving end of the generator showing the fuel regulating means.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The solderingdevice comprises a hollow head 1, which is approximately of pyramidal shape, the pointed end being used in the well known manner for applying solder to seams, joints, and other work. An end piece 2 is secured to the base of the head 1, the said end piece having the shape of a cross with the outer ends of its arms bent and riveted or otherwise secured tothe sides of the head 1;. The end piece 2 is' formed at a central point with aninternally threaded opening in which is fitted the threaded end 3 of a tube 4 which constitutes the generator Openings 4. are formed in the sides of the tube 4 at orgnear the base .ofthe threaded, end 3. A nozzle-5 is arranged within the-tube 4 and issecured thereto at a point beyond the openings 4, the outlet end ofthe nozzle extending acrossthe openings 4 within a short distance of the end of the, tube 4. The upper endof, thetube 4 .is enlarged and internally threaded as indicatedat 6"and is adaptedto screw upon an externally threaded nipple 7 at the lower j end of a tank 8. Aregulator is located in the upper portion of the tube 4 and consists of a thimble 9 and wick 10, the upper end the enlarged portion 6 of the. tube so as to retain the regulator in nlace.
The tank 8 has its lower end made tapering and is formed at its upper end withanl externally threaded collar 11, upon which a cap 12 is adapted to screw. A rod 13 is connected with the closed end of the cap 12 and extends into the tank 8 and is provided at its inner or lower end with a valve 14 which is adapted to close upon a seat 15 surrounding the nipple 7. By proper adjustment of the cap 12, the valve 14 may be moved more orless so as to out off the sup ply of fuel to the burner or to regulate the supply according'to requirement.
In the operation of the device, fuel such as 'gasolene is supplied to the tank 8 and uponopening the valve 14 a small quantity of fuel passes into the head 1 after which the valve 14 is closed and the fuel contained in the head is lighted, the flame serving to heat the head and the tube 4, and when such parts are properly heated, the valve 14 is unseated to admit of the required quantity of gasolene or fuel passing into the tube 4 which now acts as a generator and converts such fuel into a vapor which escapes through the nozzle 5 and passes into the head 1., Air is drawn into the lower end of the tube 4 through the openings 4 and mixes with the vapor, the gaseous mixture being ignited at the end of the tube4 which constitutes a burner, thereby heating the head 1 and admitting of the device being used. continuously.
. 75 of the thimble9 being enlarged to engage i the shoulder at the inner or lower end of v the deviceshown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within' the scope of the inven tion as claimed. 7
, Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1 1. In a soldering device, the combination of a hollow head, a tube having connection with such head and constituting a generator and burner, a regulator arranged within such tube and consisting of a sleeve and absorbent material carried by said sleeve, a tank having connection with the tube, and a valve for regulating the discharge from the tank to the tube.
2. A soldering device comprising a hollow head, a metal end secured to the base of the hollow head and provided with a threaded opening, a tube adapted to make screw thread connection with the metal end and formed in its sides with openings, a nozzle arranged within the tube and extending across the openings in the sides thereof, a regulator arranged within the outer portion of the tube, a tank having connection with the tube, and a valve for regulating the discharge of the fuel from the tank into the tube.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
