Specification of Lettersiatent.
- Patented duly 1916,
Applianon fired November 21, i917. f serial No. 203,212.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be itknown that I, EDGAR E. Biiosius, a citizen `of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, `Pennsylvania,"have invented a new and useful Improvementin Controllers,` of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in'which- 1 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a controller` embodying my invention. y 1
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section,
Fig. 3 is a plan view l My invention has relation to controllers,
and more particularly to controllers d e signed for use wher-e a plurality of fluid `will greatly simplify the piping connections V required. 1 y
Thenature` of inyinvention will be best understood by referenceto the accompany-V ing drawings, in whichIhave shown a preferred embodiment thereof, and` which will nowbe described,-it `being premised, however, that various changes cansbe made in the details ofconstruction, arrangement and combination f of f `the i various parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as `set forth in the appended claims. Y
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates aninlet chamber formed within a suit- 'able inclosure, such as that (pro-vided by the base and body member 3 an removable cap pla-te or coverl. This chamber 2 is provided vat one end with an inlet connection 5,
which is connected to a source of ffluid pres` sure supply which may be steam, air, water, orother liquid A bottom wall of the'chamber 2 is provided with a plurality of valve seats 6,1 four of suchseats being shown `in the ipresentinstance. l Eachofthese seats is provided with ports 7 which lead to the pipes 8. These pipes `8` inrturn lead tothe cylinders of the motive devices (not shown) to `be. controlled. Three of the seats 6 are shown as having two ports 7, and also an intermediate port 9, whilethe fourth seatis representing an instance in which the motive cylinder is supplied with fluid for its operation, and `the exhaust, instead` ofreturning to the controller, is to the atmospliere or to some other desired point.
Slidably mounted on eachof the seats 6 isa valve 10 of the D-type, and which is designed `.to control the ports. Each of the'se valves is operativelyengaged with an eccentric- 11 attached to an operating shaft 12. These shafts extend out to one side wall of the casing and are provided at their outlet ends with suitable actuating means, suoli as the hand cranks 18.
Each ofthe ports 9 is shown as communieating with an exhaust chamber or passage ,'14 formed in the base member 3 and having an outlet connectionl `at one end. 16 designates an outlet connection for any water of condensation which may accumulate in the chamber 2, this being especially provided where the controller Ais used in connection with steam operated motive devices.
The operation will be readily understood. The chamber -2 is kept supplied with the working `fluidunder pressure by the inlet connection 5. With the crank handles 13 in theirintermediate orneutral positions (see the two hand cranks at the left hand end of Fig. 1 and the hand crank' at the right hand end of said figure) the valves 10 are in posi.- tionto close both ports' 7. `When the hand crank is moved to one of the operating positions (shown by the four hand crank in `Fig.71) one of the ports 7 is opened to the admission offluid pressure from the chamber 2, while the other ofsaid ports 7 is connected with the adjacent `exhaust port 9 throughthe valve 10j Fluid pressure will now be supplied to one end of the motive cylinder controlled by this valve and the exhaust will return through the other port 7, and will be discharged into the exhaust chamber or passage 14. By moving the :hand crank inthe opposite direction the `valve is shifted to reverse the inlet and ex` haiist connectionsto the respective cylinders,as will be readily understood.
I referably pro-vide each ofA the ,A hand cran s 13 with asafety latch o'r'lockA oli some suitable character. In the drawings,
`I have shown each crank as provided with a pivoted latch member 17, which is adapted `to engage locking recesses 18 on a latch plate 19 mounted on the adjacent side wall of the casing. Each of theselatch members 17 is iin arranged to engage by the action of a spring 17a, and to b'e'released by meansof apush' pin 20, mounted in the handle of the crank. Y The advantages ofmy invention Willbe readily appreciated. The controller is simple in its construction; can be conveniently l operated; and in view of thevfact that only a single supplyandsingle exhaust connection is required for all the valves,y instead of separate supply and exhaust connections for each valve, the piping required is greatly simplified.
In the drawings, I have shown the member 3 as having tapped openings at each end am not limited to this particular number.
tvvill also be obvious that all of the valves may be double-acting, as are the Vthree valves aty the left handY end of the figures of the drawings, Aor that anyl desired number oi"V them'may be single-acting, as inthe fourth valve shown.
I claim: i i. p
