Description

I JOHN J. BuRRows Improvement in Wood-Pavements.-
No. 127,304, Patented May 28,1872.
JOHN J. BURROWS, OF WVASHINGTON DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN IV. FITZHUGH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD PAVEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,304, dated May 28, 1872.
j T 0 all whom 'it may concern:
ing drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiir'ation.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wooden pavement, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which A Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a portion of the pavement as laid Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same; Fig. 3 is a side view of two contiguous blocks; and Fig. 4 shows the mode of cutting the blocks.
I cut the blocks in the following manner: Perfectly rectangular blocks are made of any suitable dimensions, which blocks are cut lengthwise diagonally through, as shown, makin g of each two blocks, A A, of precisely the same size, each of said blocks having one perpendicular side and one inclined, as shown in 'Figs. 2 and 4. The ends of these blocks A A are cut as shown in Fig. 3that is, one end 01 each block has a recess, a, in V-shape, extending from the top and bottom side inward toward the center, and the other end has a corresponding projection, bso that when the blocks are laid down the projection on one block will fit in the recess on the adjoining block, and thus the blocks be locked together at the ends. Between the rows of blocks are placed strips B B, having one side perpendicular and the other side inclined to correspond with the blocks on both si les of them. These strips are not as high as the blocks, but leave grooves d d between the blocks at the upper side, which grooves may be filled with sand, concrete, gravel, or any other suitable material. This pavement may be laid on any suitably-prepared foundation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The within-described wood pavement, com posed of the blocks A, having one vertical and one inclined side, one end concaved and the other convexed, as shown, in combination with the short blocks B, all as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th d -y of March, 1872.
