IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR RETORT-LIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,280, dated May 28, 1872.
Speciiication describing anew and Improved Retort-Lid Fastening, invented' by GEORGE STANOLIFF, of New York city, in the county and Stateof New York.

This invention has for its object to provide a means for securely fastening the lids of gas# retorts, and whereby the closing can be rapidly effected. The invention consists in the use of a hook-shaped sliding-link support, and in its combination Ywith a cam-lever, whereby it is drawn tight.
At present the lids are usually closed by means of screws. Considerable time is required in opening and closing them, and more or less gas is consequently lost. By the use of my improved fastening time and labor will be saved and the loss of gas prevented. V
Ain the drawing represents the retort-lid, of
suitable form, provided with two ears, a and b, that project from its ends. For the support of one of the ears, a, a Xed hook, d, is secured to the mouth of the retort B, While a sliding hook, e, for the support of the ear b, is tted through the ange f of the retort7 and provided with a cam-lever, g, at its inner end. When the lever is swung to bear with its eccentric part against the iiange f or an enlargement thereof, the hook e will be drawn back to rml y hold the lid against the retort. When the lever gis swung up the lid will be instantaneously loosened, and can be removed.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sliding hook e, provided with the' camlever g, to serve as a support and fastening for a retort-lid, as set forth.
