MOP-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1918.
Application filed January 30, 1918. Serial No. 214,545.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS ERIcKsnN, a citizen of Norway, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mop-Holders, of which the following isa specification.
My object is to make a simple mop head having means for securely holding the mop, said means being easily worked to release and remove the mop and apply a new mop rag.
Figure 1 .is a perspective of a mop holder embodying the principles of my invention supplied with a handle and mop ready for use.
Fig; 2 is an enlarged detail perspective illustrating the operation of the mop holder. Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section on the line s s of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4c is a perspective of the securing device used for securing the mop in place.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective illustrating the means for attaching the handle to the head.
A mop assembled in accordance with the principles of my invention consists of a handle 1, a mop head 2 attached to the handle 1, a securing device 3 attached to the mop head, and a mop 4 extended through the mop head 2 and held in place by the securing device 3.
The handle 1 is simply a straight stick like a broom handle.
The details of the mop head 2 are as follows: A stiff sheet metal plate is cut to form the flat head portion 5 having a rectangular transversely elongated slot 6 through its lower half, thus producing a transverse mop supporting bar 7 bounding the lower side of the slot, there being a small opening 8 through one end of the supporting bar 7 and a notch 9 at the other end of the bar. The handle socket 10 is formed by cutting the plate on a transverse line from both edges toward the center and rolling the material into a circle with the edges overlapping, and the handle 1 is inserted into the socket 10 and secured in place by nails 11 driven through the socket into the handle.
The details of the securing device 3 are as follows: A piece of hard wire is cut to the proper length and bent to form the straight back bar 12, the shank 18 eritending from one end of the back bar 12 at right angles, the return bend it at the other end of the shank, the hook 115 at the other end of the return bend, the coil 16 at the other end of the back bar 12, and the front bar 17 extending from the other end of the coil; the point 18 of the front bar 17 being sharpened. The securing device 3 is attached to the head 2 by insert-ing the point of the hook 15 through the opening 8 and manipulating the device'until the shank 13 is in the open ing 8.
The mop 1 is inserted eudwise through the slot 6 and doubled upon itself around the mop supporting bar 7. Then the securing device 3 is manipulated to bring the back bar 12 against the mop directly in opposition to the mop supporting bar 7, with the coil 16 in the notch 9, and then bring the front bar 17 into position against the mop in alinement with the supporting bar 7 and back bar 12, and snap the point 18 over the end of the hook 15, and then the mop is securely held in place during the operation of mopping. hen it is desired. to change a mop the point 18 is unsnapped from the hook 15, the securing device swung around out of the way, the mop removed, and a new mop inserted.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a mop holder, a flat head provided with a transversely elongated slot, a supporting bar and an opening through one corner thereof, and a securing device having a shank mounted in said opening and surrounding said supporting bar.
2. In a mop holder, a flathead having a transversely elongated slot, a supporting bar, and provided with an opening through one corner thereof; a mop inserted through the slot and bent around the supporting bar, along the other side of the mop and supand a securing device having ashank exporting bar; therebeing a hook at one end tending through the opening in said head of the device to engage a point at the other and adapted to fit around the mop; the end of it.
5 back bar of the securing device passing along In testimony whereof I have signed my one side of the mop and supporting bar and name to this specification. the front bar of the securing device passing JULIUS ERICKSEN.
