To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LFREDERICK lV. RABEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Douglas and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Litter- Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I
This invention relates to certain improvements in litter carriers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character adapted to travel along an overhead track-way and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved'means whereby the contents of the carrier may be discharged therefrom in an automatic manner. I
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character including a portable body provided with a swinging bottom together with 'ineans releasably engaged with said bottom for normally maintaining the same in closed position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts'of my improved litter carrier whereby certain im portant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise 'more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of. my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference t-o'the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation with portions broken away of a carrier constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the coacting track-way being shown in fragment;

Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the device as herein embodied with the coacting track-way in section;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken I substantially on the line 4 4: of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings B denotes the body .or receptacle included in my improved carrier and which has its top and bottom open. The lower marginal portions of the body or receptacle B at the ends thereof converge downwardly as at 1 to substantially the transverse center of the body or receptacle B so that when the swinging doors 2 are in closed position, a bottom for the body or receptacle is afforded which is substantially V-shaped in cross section. The doors 2 have their outer longitudinal marginal portions hingedly connected as at 3 with the lower marginal portions of the side walls 4: of the body or receptacle B. The doors 2 are adapted to drop by gravity into open position so that the contents of the body or receptacle B may be discharged therefrom.
The inner longitudinal margin of each of the doors 2 at opposite ends thereof has secured to the outer face thereof the blocks Each of the blocks 5 affords a substantially horizontal bottom face or surface 6 when the door 2 is in closed position.
' Secured to the outer face of each of the ends 7 of the body or receptacle B, and at substantially the transverse center of said body or receptacle B, is an arm 8 extending a predetermined distance above the top or open face of the body or receptacle B and terminating in the inwardly directed and substantially horizontal extension 9. The arms 8 and extensions 9 are in alinement longitudinally of the body or receptacle B and secured to. the opposite faces of the inwardly directed extensions 9 are the rigid members or straps 10 arranged in parallelism. Extending upwardly from each of the inwardly directed extensions 9 and in swivel engagement therewith as indicated at 11 is a hanger 12 provided with a grooved roller or wheel 14: riding upon the track-way T and from which the body or receptacle B is suspended.
Supported by the members or straps 10 at equi-distantly spaced points at opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the body or receptacle B and bridging the space between said members or straps 10 are the pins 15 or the like.
Pivotally engaged to each of the pins 15 is the heel portion of a bell lever L. Each of the bell levers L includes a depending arm 16 and the substantially horizontal and inwardly directed arm 17 The innerend intermediate extremity of an arm 19 passing between therigid members or straps 10. The upper end portionpf thearm 19. is provided witlrthe;
grooved roller or wheel 20 adapted to contact with and ride along the lower portion of the track .T. \Vhile the contact of the wheel or roller 20 with the track T serves to limit the upward movement of the arm 19, said upward movementof the arm 19 is further limited by the fork 18 which is of a width in excess of the width of the space between the members or straps 10.
At a predetermined point intermediate the, fork 1S and the wheel or roller 20, the arm 19 has extending substantially at right angles therefromand in a 'directionlongitudinally of the members or straps 10, the arm-2l. The arm 21 is positioned above the members or straps; 19 and terminates in the downwardly directed exte11sion22. The extension 22 extends betweenthe membersor straps 10 and is pivotallyconnected with the pin 23 or the like bridging the space between' the members or straps lOat a point one of the pins'15 and theextension 9. Pivotally engaged with the lower or free end portions-of the arms 18 "of the levers L are the oppositely directed rods :24, Each of the rods24 is provided at its, outer end portion with the substantially U-shape yoke 25 having the outer or free endportions of the arms 26- thereof loosely directed through I the upper end portion of the rock levers 27.

Pivotally engaged as at 31 between each pair of ears 30 is one of, the levers 27. Interposed between the outer face of the end 4 and the fork 37 is an expansible member 40 herein disclosed as a conventional coiled spring encircling the rod 38.' The expansible member 40 constantly urges the upper end portion of the coacting lever 27 outwardly so that the arm 32 at the lower end of said lever is maintained in properposition to engage a block5 or is maintained in engagement therewith.
The tension of the several expansible members 40 is sufficient toexert a pull upon the arm 16 jof the bell lever L to maintain the arm 19 at the limit ofits-upward move ment. As the device travels along the trackway T, the roller 20 will engage and ride over the cam C carried by and depending from the track-way'T. As the arm 19 passes along the cam C, downward movement will be imparted to the arm'19 resulting. in an inward,1novement of the rods 24; and an outward movement of'the inwardlydirected arms32 carriedby the levers 27. The movement of the rods 24 is s'ufiicient to dis-engage the arms 32'of the level-s27 from the blocks 5 and whereby the bottoms 2 are permitted to dropor fall by gravity into open position and the contents ofthe body orreceptacleB discharged. v The bottoms 2 are it will also be obvious that. my ,inventionis.

1. A .device of the character described comprising in combination, an elevated track, albody hangers carriedby the body I and riding upon the track-way, a hinged bottom for the body, levers pivotally engaged with the opposite end portions of the body and provided with arms underlying the bottom for holding the same in closed position, an inwardly directed arm operatively engaged with the opposite end portion of each of the levers, bell levers supported by the body, each of said bell levers including a depending arm and an inwardly directed arm, the inwardly directed arm of one bell lever overlapping the inwardly directed arm of the second lever, the depending arm of: each of the bell levers being operatively engaged with the inner end of a rod, a substantially vertically disposed arm having its lower end engaged with the overlapping portions of the bell levers, the opposite end portions of the arm traveling along the under face of the track, an arm extending laterally from the first named arm and pivotally engaged with the body, a member carried by the track for imparting downward movement to the first named arm, and means coacting with the first named levers for constantly urging the same in one direction.
2. A device of the character described comprising in combination, anelevated track, a body, hangers carried by the body and riding upon the track-way, a hinged bottom for the body, levers pivotally engaged with the opposite end portions of the body and provided with arms underlying the bottom for holding the same in closed position, an inwardly directed arm operatively engaged with the opposite end portion of each of the levers, bell levers supported by the body, each of said bell levers including a depending arm and an inwardly directed arm, the inwardly directed arm of one bell lever overlapping the inwardly directed arm of the second lever, the depending arm of each of the bell levers being operative-1y engaged with the inner end of a rod, a substantially vertically disposed arm having its lower end engaged with the overlappin portions of the bell levers, the opposite end portions of the arm traveling along the under face of the track, an arm extending laterally from the first named arm and pivotally engaged with the body, a member carried by the track for imparting downward movement to the first named arm, a rod pivotally engaged with each of the first named levers, the adjacent end of the body being provided with a recess to slidably receive said rod, and an expansible member for constantly urging the rod outwardly.

A device of the character described comprising in combination, an elevated track, a body, hangers carried by the body and riding upon the track-way, a hinged bottom for the body, levers pivotally engaged with the opposite end portions of the body and provided with arms underlying the bottom for holding the same in closed an inwardly directed arm operawith the opposite end portion of each of the levers, bell levers supported by the body, each of said bell levers including a depending arm and an inwardly directed arm,'the inwardly directed arm of one hell lever overlapping the inwardly directed arm of the second lever, the depending arm of each of the bell levers being operatively engaged with the inner end of a rod, a substantially vertically disposed arm having its lower end engaged with the overlapping portions of the bell levers, the opposite end portions of the arm traveling along the under face of the track, an arm extending laterally from the first named arm and pivotally engaged with the body, a member carried by the track for imparting downward movement to the first named arm, means coacting with the first named levers for constantly urging the same in one direction, and means coacting with the lower end portion of each of the levers for holding the same against lateral movement.
