BREAST-WAISL specification e25 Letters Patent.
Patented July 16., 19155.
Application filed May 2, 1917. Serial No. 166,032.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GnAo-n A. Hannnnnm, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Chicago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Waists, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a breast waist or covering adapted and arranged for the .use of nursing mothers.
One object of the invention is to. provide a waist which will serve as a breast covering, and which will be provided with sections of moisture-resisting material, preventing the excretions of the breast from coming through and staining the garments of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is to produce a garment of the above character which will be so constructed and arranged as to be readily and quickly cleaned, and therefore of a sanitary nature.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character specified which will be soft and pliable of nature and capable of being Worn without discomfort.
A further object of the invention is to produce a garment of this character which will be cheap and simple of construction and quickly and easily put on and removed from the wearer, I
The invention further consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and'claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective of the waist of the present invention;
Fig. 2, a view of such waist in open. position and looking upon the inside of the garmen't;
Fig. 3, an enlarged sectional detail on line 33 of Fig. A; and
Fig, a, an enlarged sectional detail of the elastic portion of the shoulder strap.
Referring now to the drawings, the garment as there illustrated comprises a body- 5 made of suitable material, preferably of alight weight, 0 en mesh Weave. The garment is supplie with hooks 6 along one edge and adapted to cooperate with eyes 7'- along the opposite edge to detachably securethe garment in place.
The cut of the garment is of the elongated narrow type, and is intended to be wide enough to cover the breasts of the wearer and extend a short distance above and below the same. By making the garment of a relatively narrow character, it more readily conforms to the body of the wearer in a manner to enable it to more etliciently carry out. its purpose, and, moreover, renders it light of weight and more easily and quickly laundried.
Secured adjacent each outer edge of the body portion are sections of fabric material 8, which are secured by stitching, or 0therwise, along the three edges 9, l0 and 11 thereof (see Fig. 2?). Along the edge 12 the material 8 unsecured, leaving an opening 13 to permit access to the space between this section of material and the body of the garment, which space constitutes a pocket 14-.
In the pocket is placed a sheet of rubber, or other moisture-resisting i'naterial, 15, and it is preferred that such sheet of material be held within the pocket by detachable means, a for instance, safety-pins 16. The sheet of material when inserted within the pocket arranged in such position that when the garment is applied, this material will cover the breasts of the wearer, and will prevent any excretions of the breasts from penetrating through the waist or other clothing of the wearer.
It is of course necessary that garments of this character should. be capable of being readily and quickly washed from time to time, In the present invention, the sheets of rubber 15 can be easily removed fromthe pockets, thereby enabling such sheets, as well as the entire garment, to be quickly and easily washed and dried, as is necessary to make the garment sanitary.
Attached to the front and rear portions of the garment are shoulder straps 17 formed of silk or other soft material. It is very desirable that the cloth material in the garment be of soft nature, since it is worn next to the skin of the wearer and be more or less elastic, in order to enable the garment to readily ad ust itself to the wearer, but it'is undesirable that the rough surface of an elastic strip should be presentedfor contact with the body of the wearer. I I therefore form a loop 18 (see Fig. 4) of the silk ribbon or othersoft material comprising the shoulder strap, and within this loop I secure an elastic tape 19 by stitching the same, as at 20 and 21, to the upper "and lower portions of the loop part of the shoulderstrap.
The tape is secured within such loop part While in a stretched condition, and after being so secured will return to an un stretched or normal condition, producing a of such nature as to be readily and quickiy the body of the wearer and cover the breasts means for detachably connecting the ends of said garment, a section of fabric material secured to'the body portion adjacent each end thereof, each of said sections being secured to said body portion on three sides with the fourth side open to provide an elongated flat pocket adjacent each end of said. body portion, a section of moisture-resisting material for each of said pockets adapted to be inserted therein and when inserted constitilting fiat niois'ture 'esisthig sections in the
