Patented July e, 1918.
Application filed. April 1, 1916. Serial No. 88,326.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM ZIEGLER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Eye Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision of an instrument by means of which the eye lid may be held open to permit particles to be easily removed.
Again, the instrument is designed to perinit the same to be moved about the eye beneath the lid, in an effort to engage the particle or particles which have casually entered the eye, and which particles cling to the instrument for removal therewith from under the lid. 7
The invention is especially designed to facilitate its use without causing any pain or injury to the eye.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following description is read in connectionv with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction and arrangement as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the manner of using the instrument.
Fig. 2 1s an edge elevation of the instrument.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line H of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Before entering into a detail description of what is herein shown I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention to which I do not limit myself, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
As shown in this particular instance the instrument forming the subject matter of my invention consists of a unit which may be constructed from any suitable material, such as amber, celluloid, or the like, and formed with curved edges to eliminate all possibility of injury to the user.
The unit comprises what may be termed a stem 10 preferably of oval cross section formation, the stem tapering toward one end to provide a reduced portion 11 which is extended to provide a relatively large end portion 12. The enlarged end portion 12 at its point of juncture with the reduced portion 11 is ofi'set with respect to the body of the stem, being disposed at a suitable angle which will permit of the enlarged end portion being easily inserted beneath the eye lid in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. The end 12 is preferably provided with a fiat side 13 and a rounded side 14, the former being adapted to be arranged next to the eye without injuring the same while the rounded portion 14: accommodates itself to the lid of the eye without injury to the latter. By reason of the angular disposition of the eye lid engaging portion with respect to the body of the stem 10, it will be manifest that during the initial application of the instrument, the flat side 13 is arranged against the white of the eye, while the body 10 of the stem projects outwardly and downwardly from the face to permit the user to obtain the proper purchase upon the stem, so
that the lid engaging portion can be easlly moved into a position beneath the lid without causing any pain. When thus positioned, the instrument can be moved around the eye and when brought in contact with the particles lodged therein, the particles will cling to the instrument for removal with the latter from beneath the lid. The article is especially advantageous for firemen, engineers and others whose work is of such character, that foreign matter and particles frequenetly gain access to the eye. The instrument is comparatively small so that it can be conveniently carried about the person. The device is extremely simple in its construction but has been found to be very useful for the purpose intended.
What is claimed is 1. An instrument of the character described comprising a tapered stem, having an enlarged end portion adapted to be positioned beneath the eye lid and offset with respect to the stem, said end portion having one side substantially flat and the other side rounded.
2. An instrument of the character described comprising a stem having a reduced portion and a substantially semispherical enlarged end portion offset at its point of instrument being provided with rounded connection With the reduced portion, and edges. 1 adapted to be positioned beneath th'e'eye lid. In testimony whereof I affix my signature 3. An instrument of the character dein presence of two Witnesses. 5 scribed comprising a stem tapered to prov WILLIAM ZIEGLER.
