To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER 0. Born, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Middle Village, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to steam boilers and has for an object the provision of an improved construction for causing the water in the boiler to absorb more of the heat units passing through the fiues.
Another ob ect in view is the provision of an improved construction for a boiler and furnace whereby the flame and products of combustion will be retarded in their passage through the tubes of the boiler to a greater or less extent, according to the adjustment of the retarding means.
A still further object of the invention is to provide retarding members in the various flues of a steam boiler and shifting mechanism therefor extending to a point exterior of the boiler whereby the retarding means may be set so as to produce a minimum retarding effect when starting the fire below the boiler and adjusted to produce a maximum effect after the fire has been bumfor an appreciable time.

The present invention does not include the furnace or the boiler but is applicable to boilers of any kind that use tubes similar to tube 6. g
The invention comprises broadly the retarding structure 9 for each tube 6 and means 10 for adjusting the retarding means 9 so as to allow a quick draft or retard the draft so as to cause a better absorption of the heat units by the water in the boiler. The retarding member 9 is provided with one or more sections 11, each of which sections is formed preferably in one piece and with a central tubular portion 12 and a spiral portion 13. In the drawings two sections 11 are shown and three sections 14 which comprise adjustable members shown in detail in Figs. 3 to 7, inclusive.
The sections 14 are made up of a plurality of spiral members or propeller-shaped de vices 15, each having blades 16 and 17 pitched at such an angle that when the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 6 a spiral portion. is produced similar to the spiral portion for section 11. The blades 16 and 17 are connected b a tubular portion 18- so as to accommo ate the supportin shaft 19, which shaft is connected to a spider 20 at the rear 5 and to a suitable spider 21 at the front. Each of the propeller-shaped devices 15 is provided with recesses 22 and 22' and also a hook-shaped member 23 and a projection 23, the hookshaped member and the projection of one of the devices 15 interlocking with the recesses 22 and 22' respectively of the next 7 heat units to' be tablished. This arrangement is used in order that the proper draft may be maintained until the fire is well started and the usual excess smoke has been discharged. After the fire has been burning for some time the sections 14 are gradually turned in a certain direction so that they will move from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 7 gradually to the position shown in Figs. 5

shown in Fig. 1, and said' tubular member 24 is connected with a hollow gear 25 and .an ordinary spur gear 26. Spur gear 26 is arranged in mesh with the next adj acent spur gear 26, as shown in Fig. 2, so that power will be transmitted from one gear to the other for all of the retarding members in all of the tubes 6, As shown in Fig. 2, all of these spur gears are meshing so that if one is driven as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 power will be transmitted to the remaining number. A worm screw 27 ineshes with worm wheel 25 for rotating the same, said worm having a shaft 28 extending to a position exterior of the boiler 4,
said shaft carrying a crank 29 which may be rotated to any desired extent at any time for shifting the position of the devices 15. Inaddition to the devices 15 having recesses 22 and 22 and member 23 and 23 the sections 11 also are provided with these members at the ends so as to co-act with the next adjacent sections 14, whereby not only may the first sections 14 be adjusted, but the remaining sections, in order to produce a great retarding effect or a slight retarding efiect.
' When the device is in operation and it is desired to close the sections 14 so as to produce a'spiral effect crank 29 is rotated and power transmitted therefrom to the worm screw 27 and wheels 25 and the various tubular portions 24 which are secured to the first propeller-like structures of which the sections 14 are made up and during the first part of the movement of the tubular portions 24 the first propeller-like structure will move by itself a short distance until the lug projection 23' on one end of the propeller-like structure engages the socket 22' in the next adjacent propellerlike structure, whereupon both of the struc-i tures .will be moved until the third structure is likewise engaged. This successive engagement takes place until all the propeller-like structures have been formed into '-a spiral and connected with the section 11, which is rotated if motion is still applied. A continuous motion will not only form all of the propeller-like structures in the first section 14 into a spiral, but will cause motion to be transmitted to the other sections 14 successively. After the propeller-like structures have all been arranged in spirals as shown in Fig. 5, for instance, and it is desired to bring them back to their former position as shown in Fig. 1, a reverse movement is made whereupon the first propellerlike structure will move so that the hook member 23 opposite the first projection 23 utilized will engage the socket'22 of the next adjacent propeller-like structure so as to move the same successively back to the position shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the section 14 nearest the front of the boiler will be first arranged in a spiral and again first arranged in substantially a straight line as shown in Figs. 1 to 3.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a boiler having fiues of means for retarding the passage of the flame and products of combustion through said fiues, said means comprising a rod extending longitudinally through each of said flues, a plurality of propeller-like structures rotatably arranged on said rod, means on each vof said propeller-like structures overlapping the next adjacent propeller-like structure for transmitting motion from each structure to the next adjacent structure, and means for rotating one of the end propellerlike structures for causing a rotation for varying the relative position of said propeller-like structures. v 2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a boiler having flues, of-means arranged in certain of said -flues for retarding the passage of the products of combustion therethrough, said means comprising a plurality of rods' extending through said flues, there being onerod for each flue, a plurality of spiral blades arranged on each of said rods, each of said' blades being provided with a projection on each edge ogerlapping the next adjacent blade for transmitting motion from one blade to the next adjacent blade, the projections on the edges of said blades extending in one direction acting to cause: the blades to assume a continuous spiral when the blades are rotated in one direction, and the projections on the other edges of said blades causingthe blades to assume an interrupted spiral when the blades are rotated in the opposite direction, and means'for rotating one of said blades.--
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a boiler having flues of means for retarding the passage of the Harris and products of combustion through said blades are comparatively short, said short blades being grouped together, each of said blades being provided with a pair of projections overlapping the next adjacent blades, one of said projections being in the form of a hook spaced from the face of the blade, said hook acting to transmit motion from one blade to the next adjacent blade in such amanner as to cause the short spiral blades to produce an interrupted spiral when rotated in one direction While the other extension acts to transmit motion from one blade to the other and also to cause all of said blades to assume a continuous spiral when rotated in the opposite direction, and means for rotating one of said blades.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a boiler having fines of means for retarding the passage of the flame and products of combustion through said flues, said means comprising a supporting shaft arranged in each flue, a tubular driving member arranged on one end of each of said shafts, a plurality of rotatable elements arranged on each of said shafts, each of said elements having a pair of projections overlapping the next adjacent elements, one of said projections acting to cause said elements to assume a continuous spiral when rotated in one direction and the other of said projections acting to cause said rotatable elements to assume an interrupted spiral when rotated in the opposite direction, one of the end elements on each shaft being connected with one of said tubular driving members, and means for rotating said tubular driving members.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a boiler having flues, of means for retarding the passage of the flame and products of combustion through said flues, said means comprising a spiral member arranged in each flue formed with comparatively long spiral sections, and comparatively short adjustable sections, said adjustable sections being divided into small parts, each part presenting a propeller-like structure, a pair of members arranged on each of said parts acting to transmit motion from one part to the next adjacent parts, one of said members on each of said parts causing said parts to assume a spiral when moved in one direction and the other of said members on each of said parts causing said parts to assume an interrupted spiral when moved in the opposite direction, the parts next to said long sections overlapping said long sections for transmitting motion thereto when rotated, means connected with one of said propeller-like structures arranged in each of said flues for rotating the same to adjust the remaining propeller-like structures whereby a greater or less amount of retarding eifect may be produced.
