Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 30, 1916. Serial No. 139,895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. L. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to candle holders, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character, simple in construction and in operation, and which will be particularly eflicient in use, it more particularly relating to an improvement in the base of the candle holder.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the present improvement; Fig. 2 is a top viewand Fig. 3 is a side View of the metal socket member for the base of'the candle; Fig. 4 is a View of the ring clamping member;'Fig. 5 is a view of the improvement formed from a tube; and Fig. 6'is a view showing a sleeve adapted for use with Fig. 1 to maintain the spring against side play in loading the holder. Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
' The candle holder 2 may be of any desired shape or material, it being shown herein as of barrel shape, and preferably of porcelain and provided with an inturned upper end 3 to limit the upward movement of the candle and also prevent running over of the melted wax, and an outturned or flanged lower end 4 for the reception oft-he metal socket. The metal socket member comprises in one form thereof a bottom plate 5 and a plurality of upturned spring members or prongs 6, forming a cup-shaped member and some of the prongs as 7, shown herein as three in number, are longer than the intermediate members. These members 7 are provided with inturned ends or clips 8 adapted to project overand be clamped to the bottom flanged end 4 of the candle holder. Located on thesocket member is a ring 9, which is eflective when the socket member is clipped over the flange of the candle holder to secure it tightly thereon. By drawing the ring a short distance, the socket member may be readily removed from the bottom of the candle holder to permit the insertion of the candle. Located within the barrel 2 with its lower end resting upon the bottom plate of the socket member is a coiled spring 10 having a disk 11 at its upper end for engaging the bottom of the candle. By means of this spring the candle is properly fed and maintained in position as it burns up. To maintain the ring against separation from the socket member the metal members or prongs 6 are bent outwardly as at 11 and the ends form shoulders 12 upon which the ring'will rest when withdrawn from around the clip prong members 7. The prongs may be bent to form, or provided with shoulders or recesses 14 to maintain the ring in place when the clips are secure to the flange of the candle holder.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that the present improved candle holder shown in Fig. 1 is made of but four members,-the holder, the spring, the prong formed socket member, and the ring, thus providing a very simple and efficient candle holder, which will permit the insertion of the candle from the bottom by the removal of the socket member, which can be quickly and readily eifected. The socket member is of suflicient size to fitinto any suitable ornamental candle support as 20, which may be used.
For the purpose of facilitating the loading of the candle holder 2. with the candle and its spring, I have provided a sleeve or tube 20, which, as shown in Fig. 6 fits around the spring at the lower end thereof, where it rests in the socket member, and this tube projects a sufficient distanceabove the socket member, so that it will telescope with the lower end of the porcelain candle holder when the spring has been compressed a certain distance, and thus prevent the side play or wabbling of the spring during the final compression of the spring into position. I
In the form shown in Fig. 5, the socket member is made in the form of a tube 21 having a bottom. Portions of the tube are pressed out to form the prongs 6 and 7 similar to those shown in the other figures of the drawings. In this form of the improvement however, the sleeve 20 and the socket member shown in Fig. 1 are integral so that by forming the socket member from a tube the advantages set forth in connection with the use of the sleeve shown in Fig. 6 are obtained without increasing the number of the parts.
