To all whom it may concern:
Be it, known that I, WILLIAM C. STEWART, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Swampscott, in the count of Essex and State of Massachusetts, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Operating on Soles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to machines for shaping the soles of boots and shoes, and more particularly to machines of this type for molding a Hat sole before it is incorporated in a boot or shoe.
It is desirable that the sole of a turned shoe shall be shaped to approximate the contour of the last bottom prior to the incorporation of the sole in the shoe. By shaping the sole in this manner, the operation of sewing the upper to the sole is facilitated, as the margins of the sole are located in close proximity to the bottom of the last owing to the curvature which has been imparted to the sole both transversely and in a lengthwise direction by the molding oper ation.
The object of the present invention is to provide a machine which is simple in construction, and which is operated with facility to mold a flat sole conveniently positioned therein.
With this object in view, a feature of the invention consists in the combination of cooperating sole molding forms, an arm supporting one of the forms, mechanism for oscillating the arm to traverse the form relative to the coiiperating form, and mechanism for simultaneously rotating the form to cause each portion of the form to register with the corresponding portion of the cooperating form.
Further features of the invention consist in certain novel features of construction,
combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advanta es of which will be obvious to those skille in the art from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of the invention, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a machine embodying the several features of the invention, and Fi 2 represents a front elevation of the mac ine shown in Fig. 1 with the cooperating molds as shown in section.
In the present invention, the sole is conveniently positioned between cooperating sole molding forms and mechanism is rovided for oscillating one of the forms in a lengthwise direction relative to the cooperating form and for simultaneously rotating the form to cause each portion of the form to register with the correspondin portion of the cooperating form. The sole 1s conveniently positioned upon a sole supporting form which is moved vertically by manually actuated means to position the sole in the path of movement of the sole molding form. The latter form is pivoted upon the lower end of an arm which is oscillated to cause the form to traverse in a len thwise direction over the sole and apply t e molding pressure progressively. During the oscillatory movement, the molding form is simultaneously rotated to cause each portion of the form to register with the correspondin portion of the sole supporting form. t will be obvious to those skilled in the art that with this construction and mode of operation a relative lengthwise movement is imparted to the two forms and corresponding portions of the forms are caused to register as the forms are moved relative to one another.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, a flat sole, indicated at 1, is positioned upon a sole supporting form 3 having a longitudinally curved face 4 provided with a recess 5, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The sole is molded both transversely and in a lengthwise direction by a molding form 6 supported upon the lower end of an oscillatory arm, indicated generally at 7. The arm 7 is fulcrumed at its upper end upon a shaft 9, which is provided with a second arm 10 extendin therefrom and conveniently operated through a connecting rod 12 and driving crank 13 secured to the main drive shaft 14 of the machine. As shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawin the arm 7 is conveniently provided wit side members 15 and 16 which form oppositely disposed upper and lower bearings for the shaft 9 and a shaft 17, to which the molding form 6 is secured. In order to cause each ortion of the molding form to register with corresponding portions of the supportm form as the molding form is traversed ack and forth over the sole, the shaft 17 is provided with a toothed segment 20 secured to one end which engages with a curved rack 21 mounted upon an arm 22 which is secured to the machine frame. The rack 21 and the face 4 of the sole supporting form are both curved to conform with the are of movement of the sole supporting form about the shaft 9, and it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that with this constructionthe molding form is traversed haclr and forth lengthwise of the sole, and is simultaneously rotated by the engagement of the intermeshing gears 20 and 21 to cause each portion of the molding form to register with the corresponding portion of the supporting form. In order to vary the extent of movement of the arm 7, and consequently the movement of the molding form, the arm 10 is adjustably connected with the connecting rod I2. To this end the arm 10 is providedwith a curved slot 25 which receives a stud 26'supported in the end of the connecting rod 12, and clamped in any adjusted position in the slot through a clamping nut 27 The supporting: form 3 is conveniently moved from a position convenient for the presentation of the sole thereon into a pressingposition, and vice versa through the provision of treadle actuated mechanism which Serves to raise and lower the form. To this end the form is supported upon a table 30 provided With a stem 31 which is vertically movable in guides formed in the machine frame. The stem 31 is provided with a rack 32 formed thereon and engaged by a gear segmonth 33 fulcrumed at 34 and provided with anoperating arm 35. The operating arm is conveniently connected at its free end with a treadle rod 36. The table is normal] maintained in a depressed position throng the usual type of spring connection indicatedat 37 which serves to normally elevate ,tlietreadle and connected mechanism. hile it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential, except so far specified in the claims, and may be changed or modified Without departing from the broader features of the" invention.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
I. A sole molding machine having, in comhination', cooperating sole molding forms, a pivoted ann supporting one of the forms, mechanism for oscillating the arm about the fulcrum to traverse the form in. a curved path relative to the cooperating form, and mechanism for simultaneously rotating the form to cause each portion of the form to register with the corresponding portion of the cofiperating form.
2. A sole molding machine having, in combination, a sole molding form, a pivoted arm supporting the form, mechanism for oscillating the arm about the fulcrum, a cooperating sole supporting form having a face curved to conform to the are of movement of the molding form, and means for securing a relative movement of the two forms toward and from one another.
3. A sole molding machine having, in combination, a sole supporting form, a cooperating sole molding form, an oscillatory arm supporting the molding form, mechanism for oscillating the arm to move the form in a curved path, mechanism for simultaneously rotating the form, and manually actuated means for moving the sole supporting form toward and from the molding form.
4s. A sole molding machine having, in combination, a sole molding form, an arm supporting the form, crank operated mechanism for oscillating the arm and form, connections including a curved rack and gear segment for simultaneously rotating the form, and a sole supporting formcooperating with. the molding form, having a face conforming to the arc of oscillation of the sole molding form.
